Okay, here's my low-cost mod, but still in the testing phase.

While at our local City Mill store (similar to Home Depot but smaller), I came across some black end caps. Not sure what they are made of...plastic or PVC. Anyways, they were like $3.00 each, so I bought a couple to experiment with.

After doing some measurements, I put some blue tape where I wanted the cut line, and used the good 'ol dremel to cut straight across one side of the curve:

And here's a side view showing the cut, after I had filed it down nice and flat.

And washing and drying it, I placed it on the green alien cup and shot it with primer and a couple coats of hi-temp paint.

And what are these for, you may ask??
>
>
>
>
I went from this:

to this:

By cutting off a small portion of the curve, the cap is able to expand slightly and fit on that small lip very tightly. And I had to cut a piece off to clear that bracket anyways. I doubt that it would have fit if I didn't cut a small portion off. Just to ensure it doesn't pop off, I put a small bead of silicon sealant on the inside while I installed it. There is about 1/4" clearance of that center strut bolt, so it "shouldn't" pop off. (LOL...famous last words). But since this is just a prototype, I'll let the silicon dry and do some driving along some curvy sections in East Oahu to see if the dang thing stays on. I only did the driver's side for now, to see how it holds up.

Thanks Mike! I took it for a long drive this morning, purposely hit some bumps and curves, and it stayed put!

other thing to mention is that the long slat cut out, needs to be deeper than shown on the brackets, end to center.
and that the mounting point bend, toward center. center one (looking at it mounted) points right.

As for the 2 long horizontal slats:-
over all length is 34" finished.
the two ends start at 15/16" (really) but who's splittin hairs.go for the full inch (shesaid)
first bracket starts at width 1 1/8"
next bracket in at 1 3/8 "width
and Centerline is at 1 7/16".
from center viceaversa. end bracket finishes at just shy of 1 1/8" from other end.
should work, eh....mates??
good'ay

Dan

No mud flaps, but my lower rear quarter panels are painted black--I'd rather they were red.

Thanks for the measurements and the drawing Dan!

Mud flaps are very useful on the Mera, since that area is so "tucked in." I think they would look fine if done right, i.e., they don't stick out before dropping down. What would be cool if someone could fashion some "molded" flairs, I think you know what I mean. I see them on some cars, sorta like bolt-on fender flares, but they're just small pieces that go on where those flaps are located. But...on the other hand, that would then probably change the whole character of the car.

JanR: Beautiful car! Got more pics? Interior?

Tom

the stuff was already there....i have know idea what it is, even
it is a sticker of some sort. i can't tell if its been painted....will look again tommarrow.
i kinda messed it up....whoops, needs some touch up now.

lets see......the mudflaps, its funny Tom mentions the need and i have a pic explaining why and where....MY car is filthy!

now to JanR- he sent me a ton of pics of his car.
i asked him if he wanted to post his pics, or have me do it and have not heard....so i do not know.
i think it was exported to Sweden in 1992 (he bought it in 2002)
so its been there for awhile. looks soo close to my car....
he did say that it was org. white and he will repaint to white....
He's our international older brother being #5 and all.
7005 is the earliest known Mera to me. Anybody else know an older one 'sides the '86?
wonder if Rodney has #1-4 on his list??

speaking of a list. do any of you '88 owners keep track of the 1988 Meras??
i really only feel strongly about the '87's because of the first run production, blah, blah.
i am a collector- rare cd's,bootleg concert videos,
bicycles, comics, cars, small metal/wood boxes...like an "American Picker"..(see that yet?)
anyway, the rarer the better....so as most of you know, i am gunnin' for 1-4....feel me?

i am just glad it was 60 all week and i got bit by the driving bug..gotta fix the Temp gauge by April 10th
thats when the Ins. kicks in....till then some touch up work.
Later,
Dan

check this out!

o.k. so you all know why i have this picture....right?
but i noticed that the red tail light looks, on the bottom, like it says something....like 4 letters and maybe a #.
do you agree?....see, i have the Carello reds (maybe another OEM '87 Mera thing) on Mera X, it came that way, and there is alot of writting down there and then i noticed that the lucky "Ferrari" pictured seems to be missin' the 2 piece "red triangle" that our cars have black sail panels on....am i seeing things??
because i do know that this Movie was made in the earlier 80's right....off to investigate.
Later,
Dan

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Thats funny.... NO way. i am too hyperactive to be quiet..
i have a hard time NOT expressing myself.
ask any of my old school teachers!
so i doubt that you would "never" hear from me...
...but, the content would have been way different, maybe. more about the car, not the ancilliary paperwork associated....
and without all the crying/whining.....its funny after almost a year and to me, now, no sticker is a good thing
should one(and i do) want an early example of the MERA.

i PM'd Rodney to see, if he is willing to share his data on the '87 Meras.
i have offered to, in the least, help to catalog the 87's for us Mera owners. sooo...hopefully.

yesterday, I called the Insurance Co. about:
"My Friend the Mechanic."
"He lives "about 30 miles away, one way"
"soo please can i have a INS. rider, for one Day?"

Rider issued at 12:30 PM so i spent over 3/4 a tank feeling X out for any problems.....out at 12:30 pm-home at 5:30pm
out in the country, 15 miles from home 80mph or so come up behind of all things a bright red Fiero. like a Formula or SE
that was a trip. not sure if he noticed me behind him...i had turned shortly after...

The Verdict: All Is Well!!
'cept, i need to fix my Temp gauge. i messed it up, playing around.
any body got info. about adding an extra, newer gauge??

still have a front end shimmy between 40-60 MPH (i think its a balancing/weights thing)
but, between 60-110MPH (highway) seems to smooth right out, even on MI's, hokey roads.
from 60 to 90 MPH, the get-up-an-go is amazing....getyasum.
on the Highway, when you wanna pass, floor it, most impressive that it is!
after driving my Trans Am last, in the fall, the Mera was not a dissapointment at all. this little car has gots it.
after the 3800 swap...i cannot imagine the HP gains and what it will do to this current observation of mine but....
OK i'll stop lying....vroom,vroom....baby. cant wait.....Fiero X i am commin for ya.
it may just take a while longer than planned.
stupid economy....

anyway time for breakfast....be back later.
Dan

whilest staring at the Ebay add for Mera #7020, I noticed that it is an SE.
according to a Mera article i have and the fact that SE's were low units produced, by GM...
i feel that this Mera is a special one. both as a Mera and a Fiero...like mine as a Fiero but way more in the Mera area.
stupid stickers. no whining...sorry. :Pout:
WISH I HAD A JOB!!!!
in for more punishment.
Dan

How old are your tires? I have a shimmy at about 65--took it in for a balance, and they said my tires were way out of round, and wouldn't do it anyway as the tires are too old. Oh, well, so I drive 60--or 95!

thats a good question.
i have been trying to find examples of the Centerline rims...not paying attention to the tires, at all.
the age? I do not know. i also would like to find the age of these rims i have. a model # too...
i have done a centerline rim search on their web site and it says that "no known match found"
this may be the problem...on the back/inner side theres piles of weights glued on printed with a 1/4 on it.
bunches of them....also most likely the problem.....anyway,
looking for cheap jack stands so i can take the rims off for the first time ever..soo more pictures to follow.
uhhhhh.....*drawsblank*
later,
Dan

A little cross-referencing to my next upcoming mod.
