Great swap. Has been removed from Craigslist--either cuz it's sold, or some F-car owner shot him,

"No tire kickers or joy riders... CASH ONLY....
Lots of Pics to load.. Please wait to see all of them..
1981 FERRARI 308 GTSi RED WITH TAN. THIS SPORTS CAR IS REALLY FUN TO DRIVE. EVERYONE LOVES THIS CAR! THIS FERRARI HAS BEEN MODIFIED BY 2 OR 3 OWNERS AGO. THE MOD WAS DONE IN FLORIDA. THIS CONVERSION MAKES SENSE! THEY CONVERTED IT TO A FIERO (GM) V6 2.8 ltr. WITH THE FIERO GETRAG 5 SPEED TRANS. THIS MAKE IT REAL EASY TO FIND PARTS AND GET IT WORKED ON. NO SPECIAL FERRARI MECHANIC NEEDED. I JUST HAD THE (GM) TRANSMISSION REBUILT TO THE TUNE OF 1400.00. IT RUNS AND DRIVES JUST FINE. IT ALSO HAS 3000.00 IN NEWER KONI SHOCKS (as stated by previous owner) They are adjustable to the height you desire. THIS ALSO COMES WITH A SET OF REPLACEMENT DOORS. THE DOORS ARE VALUED AT 2000.00. THEY ARE LOADED WITH THE GLASS AND IN GREAT SHAPE. THE OVERALL CONDITION IS THAT IS LOOKS GREAT FROM 10 FEET AWAY, BUT HAS SOME RUST SPOTS THAT WILL NEED ATTENTION TO MAKE IT A SHOW CAR. IT IS AGREAT DAILY DRIVER.Upgraded 355 MOMO rims with Great Directional Z RATED tires! The Tach, Oil, Temp, and Fuel gauges work. Speedometer works (some of the time- I think it is a ground issue) It has some quarks, but wont keep you from having fun while driving it. I do not have the Org. rims. This has the Fiero rear cradle... simply 4 bolts to drop the motor and the rear end. This is a GREAT car to put a LS1 Corvette motor in. It uses the ORG. Ferrari muffler. Windows work, but run slow like all Ferraris. I have the cover that goes around the spare tire and covers the NEW master cylinder. Comes with Manual. Bring CASH and enclosed car trailer. Unless you are within 100 miles. I AM ONLY SELLING THIS COLLECTIBLE 308 (like magnum PI) BECAUSE LAST YEAR I PICKED UP A 348. ( does any one guy need 2 ferrari's??)"

Wish I could have seen the pics.

Re. running temp: I had to retard my spark (1-2 degrees) to get my NOx down to pass AZ emissions. The engine now runs about 30 degrees cooler--mixed blessing.

Yeah, Dan, would like to see a couple pics--got a "404" on that link.

crap! my idea would work if i had a light source...
i moved the existing back up camera that came on the car when i bought it..

ran thru my stereo DVD player.
thinking of rigging the trunk light with a switch and a smaller camera closer to the gauge for more focus....it was all small and hard to read...maybe a night vision camera would work.

Hey guys, hope everyone had a relaxful long weekend!

Wow, that is one strange conversion. Sounds like he has $$ to spare, wonder why he didn't just put in a V-8 from the start?

Dan, I think you're ok with that temp. I installed the low temp thermostat and Rodney's low temp fan switch, so now my temp rarely even approaches 180. Still yet, my Fiero gets a lot hotter than the Mera...can probably cook burgers and hot dogs on the grills. LOL..actually, not a bad idea. Put a frozen lasagna on the Fiero grill when I leave work, and it will be piping hot by the time I get home.

Never had a chance to post my CAI mod. I did this a while back, and never had a chance to go back underneath and take photos.

Had a heck of a time removing the "water separator box" or whatever that is. Seems like from other threads, there is some "discussion" as to its real use. Anyways, with the Mera panel, there was no way of getting that box out, so I just ended up hacksawing the thing out.

Here's a pic of where it mounts to the panel. You can't see it, but I used is the aluminum ducting they sell for dryers, the one that has a 12" length that is meant to go through walls. I used tin snips to cut it down to size, and then used some bolts/nuts to attach it to the hole in the panel. With the left over duct, I used it to create the junction between the rubber elbow from the air cleaner housing, to the dryer hose. I wrapped electrical tape to where the large hose clamps go, so they would not dig into the aluminum hose when tightened.

Pretty inexpensive mod. About $15 total for the duct that I used for the mounting, the hose, and three large hose clamps (bought them all at the local hardware store).

Does it work? Well, I made a very unscientific test. Before I did this mod, if I held a lit cigarette near the opening, I could not tell if the smoke was being sucked in. After the mod, the smoke is DEFINITELY being sucked in! Difference in power...I'd say nil. But with the increased sucking noise, the butt dyno thinks there is. I personally like it. With that said, however, I don't think I would recommend this mod if your Mera is going to be driven in the rain. Unlike a Fiero, the opening in the Mera is where rain can accumulate and get sucked in.

And one more CM (Cheap Mod). Early on (LOL, I think on page 1 or 2), Rodney noted that I had the wrong exhaust tips (mine came out quite a ways, and was just a verticle cut). So what I did was hacksaw them at an angle, and closer to the body. Filed it down, sanded it, and painted with high-temp black paint. I know, not OEM (Original Equipment Mera), but it looks better.

And you might ask, what's that car in the background? Its the Mera's stablemate...88GT w/ T-Tops.

This was suppose to be my Project Car. Had it shipped here from CA. But then, the Mera came along. So instead the 88GT became my daily driver...one of the most reliable cars I've owned. The gal I bought it from...she was on the 1988 women's US Olympic Basketball Team (she gave me one of her Olympic business cards!). She bought it in 1988, drove it a little, and when she went off to play professional women's basketball, she put it in storage. When I bought it around 4 or 5 years ago, it had less than 40K mileage.

Later,
Tom

it listed as a Real FERRARI 308 GTSI both on Jalopnik and E-bay....i believe the engine is the 2.8 fiero engine. least thats what it says in both the adds...i will see if i can find more....swing back to page 29 of this thread and find REHOLMS post about half way down it was working yesterday....all the info and a link to the e bay add were still active.
*EDIT* Thomas?? is that ducting like for the opening by the doors? i bet if it is you get better results while driving...like a RamAir effect. the RamAir is a Pontiac thing. is it not?? looks at the FireBird TransAm's...ect...that is cool. wonder if one could use it as fresh/cold air intake for say maybe a turbo....speaking of turbo ....Nelson is M.I.A. also....OH...NELSON you still out there??
D

PS TOMMY WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN!! i miss you. plus its Summertime picture season....hint...MR. Paradise....HINT.
ohh and i feel bad sometimes for HighJacking your thread....sometimes..

Big D,

Howzit! The "whale tail" is your standard Fiero tail. I have installed original IRM (no longer in business) extensions to it, so it does look taller/wider/bigger. I will take a measurement for you though after work.

I'm not sure on that ram-air effect, being on the side. The aerodynamics of the car may actually put that outside of the "jetstream." That area is accessible by removing the tire and the front part of the inner wheel well.

Yeah, that looks like a 2.8 Fiero, but different. Taller distributor shaft, carburetor instead of F/I, etc. Guess he did not want to mess around with the ECM, harness, etc. But just sounds strange...he spent all that time and money for the setup, to include $1400 to rebuild the trans, and no telling how much to modify the chassis to accept the Fiero engine/trans chassis...wonder why he just didn't put in a V8 at the same time? Car looks awesome, then bam, you open the back lid and with all that space....disappointment. But then again...good project for the next buyer!

Off to work!

Edit: Our posts must have crossed. Love that picture with the Pontiac sign in the background! Dang, I should have take pics before the Pontiac dealerships closed up a while back. There was only a couple here on the island. And no worries on hijacking! This is probably the best-ever Mera thread on PFF!

Tom

Where did you find a Pontiac dealer that still has new GTO's in stock, much less any new Pontiacs at all?

PORTAGE MI. on S Westnedge Ave. they had all kinds of Pontiacs....G 5,6,....and the mighty 8.

this dealer is staying open cuz its Cadalliac and Buick also...what a passle of Ding Dongs tho! cant tell cuz i did a little photo edit. the one pic with the Pontiac over the roof is supposed to have a "Caddy" sign next to it Sup. no harm no foul...
them chumps tried playing me. the one guy comes out while i was lying on the ground to take a few snaps...and he like.....duh-hoy. "can i help you". i say "hello, i am just trying to get this exclusive Pontiac in a pic with your sign before you all take it down." then he says ..."what makes you think we are going to take it down?" i told him about the Pontiac Appreciation Day tribute thing, they all scoff...and announce sarcastically..."hey guys its Pontiac Appreciation Day".....by then the showroom was empty for the sales peeps are out with meooking at the "Ferrari"....till they find out its a Fiero.....(cue the crickets)...i did find out that they cannot sell "new" cars but can sell "used" cars. so get ready for alot of "USED" "low Mileage" Pontiacs in the used section. i see the scam high dollar "used Pontiacs" as far as the eye can see.

maybe this will work.
eBay listing*EDIT* NOPE!

as far as to why the guy put the 2.8 in....it does not bother me but alot of people got spooked when gas skyrocketed and they thought was a good ideer. also i am sure it was a lot cheaper than any other swap before he SOLD IT. just another Ding dong if you ask me
and it does state in the ebay add, that the GM parts are a more desireable/accessiable option and no Italian tech. is necessary. i can see that. but Toms got it right at least a 3.4L for some future mods. esh.....bloody wish i had a job. its a commin i can feel it....next car is this Lotus i had my eyes on before i got X.

its still for sale!

dont the F-cars all have Carbs?? he was trying to be tricky...maybe?!
also thanks for gettin the Measurements for me. can't wait. i like the taller tail too...when you say wider... does that mean if i find a tail in a junk yard it will be different that yours. i know that the OG Fiero tail is not that tall, but do the IRM tails extend farther than the Fiero OEM??

ohh....yeah Tribute Day lake action.....yes its a different lake...i have 5-6 big a$$ lakes with in 5 miles of me...later

man i have never taken so many pictures in 1 day ever....i am over 170 pics for the day.....Pontiac Tribute Day was a blast....
for some reason every body wanted to know about Mera X today.....till they found out it was not a Ferrari. some people i swear....i could not dissapoint them more lessen i had ran over their pooch or something.

well i take that back 1 guy yesterday hunted me down to have a "good look at your Mera". he said he saw me and X one day and went online to see what a Mera was. he said he was glad to have seen me again. real cool dude. totally impressed that he was. that was nice for a change.
later

Dang...I wish we had lakes like that here. There is one lake in the middle of Oahu (Lake Wilson). Its pretty much filled with algae, scum, and what-have-you, mosquito infested, etc., but I heard people still go fishing there. Nice photos Dan...don't forget to back them up on a DVD or backup hard drive! Looks like game-on, I'll have to match those sunset photos!

I believe the "S" in GTS indicates the model that the roof can be removed (Targa style). The "B" in GTB indicates a hard top. I think they must have just gotten the GTS and stuck them on all Mera's. By right, mine should be a GTB. But I figure I'll just keep the original tag, and if anyone asks, I'll say the "S" stands for Sexy (LOL...the car, that is).

Okay, it looks like the Fiero tail is 56" long (measured centerline), and 12" wide. Those IRM extensions I used increases the angle slightly, so it just gives the appearance its bigger. But it is pretty big.

Rick I hear you on black cars. I park my Fiero outside, so I just tell folks that layer of dust and grime is actually a fine layer of protectant for the finish.

i agree the stinger is to me the closest Ferrari 308 kit around....hands down.....

Tom, you can have all my lakes. all i want is your volcanos, mountains, ocean, tropical beaches/weather, friendly people (i assume) whats to be mad about out there in paradise? i guess it is nice to have a source of fresh water at least.

you know yesterday while at the dealership the 1st time. one of them dorks asked "if i wear a Detroit Tigers hat and go around investigating people"....i did tell him i have a friend in HI with a Mera like mine and his mane is Tom....hahahahahaaaa...

so does the GT stand for Gran Turismo? i guess i could look it up myself....duh! i qualify -GTS for i have the removable roof. the sun roof. that count?
here i made this for ya awhile back. "A Real Mera in Korea" tried to use your car but your previously released pics would not look as good as mine....ever!! well 'cept your paint and wheels, and interior and well you get the picture....

get ya sum
Dan

Cool beans Dan! Hawaii may be near the top of nicest places to live, but it comes at an extremely high cost. We're surrounded by water, and yet seafood is more expensive that beef here. Want a nice piece of bluefin tuna or snapper...about $15 per lb. Gallon of milk...$7.50+ Carton of eggs...$4-5 Gas...$3.48/gallon, and higher on the outer islands. Cost to dry clean ONE pair of slacks...$7.80 We do most of our shopping at Costco or Sam's Club. Quality of education ranks near the bottom. In last Sunday's newspaper, there were at least five full pages of foreclosures. Most families here, both husband and wife needs to work, and lots have two jobs. And that's just to make ends meet. But despite all that, I guess its still a nice place to live. But for those who have never ventured away from Hawaii (and there are lots), I feel sorry for them since they don't get a chance to appreciate anyplace else. I drove cross country five times, and there's a lot of nice places to see. I think every place has its pros and cons; its what you make of it that really counts. Later...off to work (LOL)...

you know i heard that. seems like the beef would the high dollar. due to lack of space to graze. who da thunk.
is milk really more than gas, per gallon? WOW. glad i am lactouse.
how that old saying go ....."if you teach a man to fish..." and with that fertile volcanic soil (i think, anyway) you got i would go vegeatarian or something grow a garden. maybe Astronaught food....sea rations....i am willing to sacrifice.....wait, a sacrifice, there you go maybe its time to bring back an old favorite snack food of volcanos....the Virgin. good luck finding one tho. in this day and age.

i just watched a show on NatGeo about Noodleing. thats where they shove bare hands into catfish holes to get them out. insane. like 50 miles or so form Mera7's place...
Hey MIKE...ever do any noodleing?? help a bragh out. i am game if you are. hahahahaaa... Lake Carl Blackwell if i remember corectally.
now thats just being silly. say goodnight, Dan. "goodnight, dan"
later,
Dan

P.S. now i know what to get you for Christmas....some yard birds. chickens, Cornish Game Hens...whats your growing seasons like over there? year around i assume.

My black car was a triple black (top, paint, interior) 68 GTO convertible with hideaways. I bought it because it was a GTO convertible. I sold it because it was Black. I would have to start it, turn on the A/C full blast, and by the time I finished dusting it off, it was cool enough to get into, without getting heat stroke.

my new favorite word...Omologato...it used to be Superleggera....

Hey Rick? did you get a hold of Karl at the Portage Mi dealership?? what did he say?

i never turn on my AC. in any of my 3 cars. EVER. my solution is to roll the windows all the down and drive like "Ace Ventura- Pet Detective".

well i cannot talk, at least up here in MI we only hit the 90's for about a month or two....but, its the humidity thats a killer...i long for this "dry heat" i have heard so much about. thats a price i pay being surrouned by lakes. on really hot days its to the lake or a cold shower or 4. a day.
Dan

*EDIT* this is where Richard shows up cuz its time for a flip. he is better at that game of flippin new pages than i.
OHHH....Richard your services are need on pg. 30.
