Looks like it's a module for doing single-push up/down for existing power windows. It doesn't add power windows. For that you'll need lots of extra hardware and wiring with the switches. The DEI-530t is just to add express up/down to them from what I can tell.

My steering column just arrived! It's out of an '08 STS I think. I'm going to need a few more things before I can do much with it though. The clock spring for the G6/cobalt/etc... instead of the caddy one, some transparent red plastic to replace the white-ish ones inside the steering wheel buttons, and an airbag cover along with some foam to make a suitable horn button. I'll start a build thread once I get the rest of the things I need to make this steering wheel swap really rock.

Right. If you want to make it faster, you need new or larger motors for the windows, and maybe give them a little more juice. I wouldn't try to make them too fast though.

I don't know if anyone discussed it. But back to that H U D unit that was pictured. I wonder if it was move to the rear end of the speaker houseing. Which would be about 2 inches back toward driver. If that display wouldn't grow by a half a inch larger????? Any thoughts?

In the GTP or in a Fiero? The windshield angles are widely different between them, and the Fiero glass doesn't have the coating for HUD, so getting a really crisp and clear displa on the Fiero windshield is going to be a bit more difficult. Unless you go find a glass shop that will install a windshield with the coating in a Fiero. I don't think size is an issue with it, and you probably don't really want it any bigger than it is stock, unless you're trying to do something more interesting. But you really want to avoid providing too much information in a HUD, since the more that's there, the more it will distract you (even if you can see through it). Your eyes will end up focusing on the information rather than the road.

you0 dont need that coating. i have iHUD for my iphone and it works fine on the fiero and the aveo. hard to get them to stay still tho. but it works without a film. but it you feel it is really necessary, then im sure you can find the film on ebay or some place.

to make your windows faster, screw using a voltage amp circuit on 20+ year old wiring. just use a HD relay and run wire of the correct gauge from the batt to the relay and from there to the window motors. unless you want to send more than 12v w/ 600+ CCA to the motors. and also, adapt a newer car (preferably a truck or car with bigger heavier windows) window motor to the fiero gear set or to the output shaft all together. get creative. it can be done without dealing with 20+ year old wiring.

The coating isn't required, no. But having it makes it 100x better. Without it, you get a sort of double-vision on most cars, as the light reflects off both panes of the glass. You wouldn't want to use a film on the windshield either, as it can create other visibility issues, and is probably illegal in most states anyway. Properly treated glass is going to be a lot better.

DO NOT HOOK THOSE UP TO YOUR IGNITION!! You need to use relays for both buttons. There are many many more things powered by the key than the igntion. The ignition fuse is probably one of a dozen circuits that the key powers. If you need help send me a PM. I have had push button ign/start for about 12 years.

The cars with factory HUD also have a windshield that's about 4 times the price. It is much "truer" on the thickness all the way through. This helps prevent the wavyness in the display. You'll notice if you move your head up and down. It is kind of like mirrors for your house. A cheap mirror for a living room will be a 3, where as a bathroom mirror is rated at a 5. I put the non-HUD windshield in my GTP, and it was noticeable, but not worth the extra $300 for the better one in my opinion. Never heard of a coating on them.

The expensive glass has an extra layer between the glass panes, of polyvinyl butryal (PVB), instead of the coating, which is why they cost so much more. Having the coating on the interior pane would be cheaper, and improve the display as well. The "film" you can buy for HUD, is basically a small sheet of PVB that gets glued to the windshield where the HUD would be reflected. I don't know if any of the glass companies even make a HUD version with the built-in PVB layer for Fieros. It would be interesting to know though. To me the extra cost is negligible for my swap, since I want the car to look like it just rolled off the line with all the features I'm putting in it. But for others it might not make a difference. I'm pretty sure all the HUD retrofits don't have the special glass either. To each his own. I'm just putting the info out there for those that do care to have the higher quality display.

Just to be different, how about something useful?

An air/fuel gauge

Actually, one can tell when the computer goes from open to closed loop with the above A/F gauge.
It also shows when lean or rich conditions exist.

Plus, unlike some of the pie-in-the-sky ideas posted, I've actually installed two A/F gauges, one on each of my Fieros. One over 4 years ago and the other over 7 years ago on my DD. Both still work great!

Meanwhile, did you ever get your OpenGauge MPGuino v2.1 MPG monitor to finally work correctly in your Fiero?

dobey:I think this is more of a thread about what can be done, than what has been done. And I don't think all that much has been done in the way of adding newer tech to Fieros. The most I've seen really are the auto-dimming/compass/temp mirrors, and lumbar seats. There's another thread with someone adding back-up and IR cameras. And lots have added dvd players/lcd screens, but generally that's seemed more for show than functionality from what I've seen.

OK, how about bolt on wings that serve as fuel tanks for the roof mounted jet engine. We have Fiero boats, why not Fiero planes.

But one may expect a slight drop in fuel economy.

the narrow band a/f wont show as accurate of a reading as a wideband a/f would. its been so long since ive used a narrow band tho ive been rocking a wideband for tuning purposes.

i havent installed it on the fiero yet. ive been rocking it out on the aveo. when the fiero is getting tuned. my injectors are too big, so yay.

The reply you quoted was in reply to someone asking for more pics of actual Fieros. If it's a boat or a plane, then it's not a Fiero. It's a boat or a plane. I don't think anyone has built an amphibian Fiero, or a Fiero that also flies. But that is not really modernizing the Fiero. Building a fully functional ion drive engine (which NASA hasn't even finished doing yet), and making a flying car out of a Fiero, like the ones in Back to the Future 2 would be more futurization than modernization. But if you want to do it, I'd love to go for a drive when you finish building it.

What have people looked at doing with the tail lights? There's switching to LED lights, but I think most people use the Ferrari style insert with the round Vette lights to get a more "modern" look. I've been thinking of ways to modernize the light housings we already have, and preserving a somewhat stock look, rather than just copying the Euro/Vette round lights. I'll see if I can't manage to tweak up a photo to mock up what I'm thinking of, and post it later.

I see CarPC was mentioned in the first post, with a pretty generic picture of a double din screen....

Here is the system that is going into my Fiero:

Across the top bar icons are for:
Internet is connected (Using my iPhone as a 3G modem), Phone is Connected via Bluetooth, Skype is Connected, Flashing alert that maintenance is due, Mic is red indicating the system is not listening for voice commands

It even has the ability to email me when any scheduled maintenance is required on the car. In the picture below, it reports that the oil needs changed, but still had 3,000 miles left The car is still not road ready, so I will have to reset that the day I finally get to take her out for a drive.

(The photo is a Google image place holder, till I get mine painted and can get a nice pic of it)

Was playing with a picture of my taillights earlier, working on updating the layout to be a bit more modern, and was looking for a comparison image of a new Pontiac. The G8 tail lights look interesing, like they might fit perfeclty at the currenty Fiero tail light corners...

Here's what I came up with for those:

And just like I said in MN, I will

In fact, I share it with everyone I have a tracker built into the skins installer, when the installer completes it adds one to a counter I set up. So far the skin has been installed over 15,300 times, and downloaded just over 23,000 times.

What about modern antennas? I've been looking for some antenna upgrades, that have as much in one antenna as possible. A nice modern sharkfin/stubby style antenna in the back center of the roof would look pretty nice compared to the giant stalk. It looks like I might have to go with separate am/fm/cb antenna from the gps/gsm/cdma/wifi though. But I'm still searching and haven't settled on anything specifially yet.

Here's what I came up with for those:

Hmmm.. That gets me thinking about a few things... Attach the black piece in between the tail lights, to the decklid? Make it look like a trunk?

You could do what ever you want I guess. I was just thinking about re-designing my tail lights, and noticed the G8 lights are about the same height as the Fiero lights, and have a similar rounding on the outside edges. I'll probably do something a bit more interesting, and custom, myself.

IDEA!! got this from a japanese nostalgic car forum. tacho gauge needle that changes a color when its time to shift. not a bad idea. i think i will try this some how. always red, then changes...white when its time to shift. pretty nifty idea.

The needles are lit up by some EXTREMELY tiny SMT LED's... in RGB. Meaning, they'll light up to Red Green or Blue + tons of other color combos. I haven't finished the wiring for the green or blue or made a controller for different colors, so for now, they're red. When I get my "shift light" I can have the tach needle change color at my preset shift point... a dream/idea I've had for 7+ years now. I ordered these on ebay direct from the manufacturer in China, right after that my paypal was stolen... coincidence... I think not

Interesting. When I get around to doing my custom dash and all that, I'll be looking at building a custom gauge cluster using an AM-OLED display, and custom code to drive it. I'll also be building a custom HUD setup using an AM-OLED as well. Since the gauges will just be graphics rendered from some software I write, I can make them look and behave however I want them to. The color changing needle is but one of an infinite number of possibilities.

these slowly go to red when a paremiter is reaching its limit. i like this. an instant jump would be cool too. but i really like this.

i simpler way to make a color changing needing was explained to me like this... have an arch of leds, each in a different color. only allow light in though one spot a tiny bit bigger than the SMD LED in the needle. cheper and simpler than doing it the way i was thinking of with some kind of controller. maybe if i want it to light a different way a controller would be needed.

one thing i think would be really cool to do would be make a circuit that does a gauge needle sweep test link a lot of the newer cars have everytime the key is turned on and everything does its "bulb test". wouldnt be all that hard. findout what the max voltage and signal is to make each needle do a full sweet and replicate it. something like an atmega or some other controller of the sorts would be needed. more planning, designing and testing would need to be done of course.
