I came across this too-good-to-be-true-ad yesterday. ( The location is listed as Los Angeles but in the pics there is an out of state plate). I was curious to see what kind of reply I would get so I sent an anonymous inquiry.

http://cars.oodle.com/view/...7132-los-angeles-ca/

Here is the thread of our communication (read from bottom to top)...The seller is listed as Melissa but signs emails as Tamara. Hasn't asked me for money yet but I'm sure that would be next.

Feel free to mess with this scumbag scammer (but obviously don't include any real personal info)

Hello again,

Thanks for getting back to me. As I told you in my first email, I got a new
job and moved to Augusta,ME. The car is now at the shipping company
warehouse in Augusta, ready to be delivered. I prearranged the deal with
eBay Motors so my presence isn't necessary. let me explain how it works:

The shipping cost is included in the total price of the car.You will have 5
days to test it and inspect the car prior to make any purchase and if by
any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back
on my cost. So if you want to start this deal I need the following details
from you:

First name:
Last name:
Address:
City:
Country:
Postal Code:
E-mail address:
Tel # :

After I will have all those details from you I will forward them to eBay so
we can proceed with this transaction, and they can open a case regarding
our deal. eBay will contact you with all the details that you need to
complete this deal. Once again I assure you that the car is in perfect
condition just like I describe it. The title is clear and will come with
the car.I'm sorry this isn't a local deal but I hope I can make it up with
the great condition and the great price that I'm selling the car.

Waiting your email with the requested details.

Thank you,
Tamara

Hi,

The car is in perfect condition, no accidents/liens/loans. No scratches. I
have all the car manuals, title, documents. I'm selling this car because my
child of only 19 died 4 months ago in a car accident,a drunk driver hit him
and his fiancee. He was with his fiance's car coming to our home at his
little brother birthday of 10 years old. The unit belonged to my son and it
brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it. I also got
a new job and moved to another city, and many other things have priority
now, so, this car has to go.

If you are interested to buy it let me know soon your e-mail address in
order to send you more pics .
Thanks
Tamara

I want this car! How rare is an 88 GT with the 2.5, 4-cyclinder?

I would stay far away from that.... It does most certainly seem like a scam. If eBay had ANYTHING to do with the car, it would be listed on eBay. "My child of 18 years" Does not sound like English is their first language.

The ad shows the car is in Los Angeles. She goes on to say she moved to Augusta Main, and then goes further to say that the car is in Augusta Maine, but her presence is not required to sell..... I think the stories got mixed up, as she is supposedly in the same town as the car is being sold in.

I see a lot of signs that seem like they are meant to entice someone:

- I HAVE to sell the car I am moving
- I am a female, (And do not know the car's true value)
- It is all ready to go at the shipping company
- "She" will take it back and pay for shipping if you do not like the car.
- The EXTREMELY low miles and the price

This much hype can easily make people act quickly, and not think things all the way through.

It's a scam - the car has been on Ebay at least three times with a guy selling it with the same pictures - I remember the rear end shot, I wanted to paint my 86 all white like it.
Once there was two auctions at once, same pics, different prices/descriptions.

I replied with a very official email saying to the effect that the IP address has been traced, and an investigation is now under way, and to be expecting a visit from law enforcement

The problem is they are probably in Nigeria or something, and nothing is going to be done about it. Her sister actually just emailed me last week saying the car was still available, and she went on to say that I had won the Nigerian lottery (again) and she just needed my banking information so she could make a deposit for me.

Sad thing is that believe it or not every day people still fall for those. BTW that is a poor one. Typical I am away story, EBAY process that most will know is not and sad story behind sale.
