Hey guys, So I have everything through Intact and now that I am about to safety my Fiero I contacted them about insurance for Summer.
... I come from Saskatchewan where this is MUCH easier.....
Anyways, they tell me the car is on a blacklist for insurance and then sent me a link to the US where they show it being a risk for insurance. On the same list, are a bunch of other sports cars including Lamborghini's, Ferrari's and even imports like the Civic Del Sol.
The girl that I have been talking to though sounds a bit daft and is also feeding me contradictions. It went from No, they can't license it to.... maybe... contact us when you are ready as things change daily...... (that made no sense to me. they would insure it on a Tuesday but not on a Wednesday?)
So before I take this to her superior, I figured I would check who everyone is using here. There is someone with what I think is a gold, 85 GT (or 86 SE) just down the street from my work that was driving a Fiero in real good shape for a while this summer (right by Chinook in Calgary) and I never see it in the winter so I am assuming it is not his daily driver either.
There has to be an option, and I would prefer not to switch all of my insurance again, so does anyone have any ideas? What did you guys do?
This doesn't directly answer your question, but here in BC we have no choice and have to insure through the Insurance Corporation of BC... and there are no issues with buying insurance for Fieros.
No issues in Ontario either. We insure through Allstate (house and 3 cars). My 88 is insured for fire and theft during the winter and PL/PD from April-November. No issues yet...but I imagine when I send them pictures with the Lamborghini Aventador body kit on it they will probably start to get a bit edgy

Yeah, you guys are in like a hybrid system between Alberta and Saskatchewan.
ICBC was modeled after SGI to a certain degree, which is a FAR better system. I would take ICBC as an option any day of the week over the complete private like Alberta. ICBC has it's flaws, I know. Like the "Sue yourself for coverage" angle that their agents actually suggest to people. (My brother and his girlfriend were in an accident. The solution for appropriate coverage was to sue my brother to have ICBC cover under liability. I can't remember the exact reason, or exactly how it played out... but it was just sad.
I would still rather have that than what Alberta has. I absolutely hate insurance here. It is just absurd.
Have you tried contacting the Calgary Fiero Owners Club (CFOG) to get someone to go along with you in support. You know, show them a Fiero that's actually insured.
I have no trouble insureing mine in Alberta (Lethbridge). I would contact another provider. I use RBC Insurance, they've never given me any hassle, and I take the insurance off every winter.

This sounds totally ridiculous....
I just looked at my Policy. I have both Fieros insured on a "collector car" policy to full appraised values - with Intact Insurance !!
Deal with an Insurance Broker - like Young & Haggis or Brokerlink (I've used both) They'll find the best deal to fit your needs and circumstances. Unlike government run insurance, you CAN shop around for the best deal. Y&H moved my Dodge Caravan from Intact to Aviva - saved $200/year for same coverage.
This sounds like another case of a big company hiring a young person with no experience because they work cheap instead of paying someone with experience to do the job correctly.
