What happened was.. Well it failed the shake test. My suv stands are more flat on top than id like leading to them to like to slip. I only use them on the Fiero when pulling a cradle. When I get them in place and the jack lowered i like to do a shake test to make sure its all good... Im thinking i should stop doing it this way because this isn't the first time they slipped ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ha yeah it went something like: a subtle thunk, followed by the sound a tree makes as it goes over, then the sound of me getting hit in with a jack handle while you hear the top section of the stand clattering across the ground with a loud tinging clatter, lastly a loud thunk as it hits the ground!...
Then my thoughts were.. well i dropped it.. is it going to fall more (as the stand that was left was cocked at a good angle) then i was like oh i dropped it this will make good word play IE lowering/dropping... Like suspension?.?..?
Place an 8 inch length of 2x4 between the jack and the chassis. Both the chassis and jack gouge into it and keeps things from slipping.
Not a fan of the jack lift technique for this very reason. Had you used a cherry picker, lowered it an inch and then did the shake test, the car would still be supported and be far less dramatic.

Im Skywurz being overly dramatic is what I do.
Yeah the Cherry pucker was only 10ft away. I typically use it on my keepers where im being much more careful not to do horrible damage. Having stands that are extended 2ft in the air with sloppy tolerances doesn't help the safety of the jack method. I had used it last month because the picker was gone. This method seemed to work fine...ish..
I do a shake test too...But I A) keep the jack close (1/8") so if things start to go wrong the jack can catch it, and B) I don't weigh a bunch so my shaking isn't that bad.
Story from 1980s; A fellow Aircraft mech at NAS Alameda (Who was also a Preacher) was working on his RV...He used CAR stands.....That was his final mistake.

I am glad your safe.. But you are correct. That is not the best way to do it. I am sure at this point you will be doing it differently. Was this your attempt of removing the cradle??

Back when I had a lifted 4x4 truck, there was an incident in which I forgot to set the parking brake and it rolled right over me when I disconnected the driveshaft.
Thankfully on 37" tires there was lots of ground clearance, so it just rolled right past me, leaving me looking up at the sky ... and then slowly into the shed.
Truck obviously was unharmed, shed was largely repairable.
My ego, on the other hand...
