Nice! That's awesome. The best part is that, not only is the car awesome in the straights... but you were really taking it to that Lotus Exige!!!
No. Most of the time it's classic Porches, but from time to time I get to play with the newer ones. They really have to work hard to get me out of a bend. (Turbo Slug pulls hard, much harder than they were expecting!) They usually get me with the late braking; I have to let off earlier or I end up in the gravel!

Those would be really sweet to watch. Do you have any longer YouTube videos that aren't shorts that show you track-racing?
Here are some early attemps at making videos: (Attention, sometimes very boring!)
P.S. I've added a couple more "shorts" to the list on the 1st page/message. (I can't seem to make the shorts embed in the message like the 3 vids above? Format short not accepted by PFF?) ------------------ "Turbo Slug" - '87 Fiero GT. 3800 turbo. - The fastest Fiero in France! @turboslugfiero https://youtu.be/hUzOAeyWLfM

Man, you almost had that Lotus on several turns... you were like Alain Prost out there, but with a Lewis Hamilton 2007 season finish.
What kind of brakes do you have on your Fiero? Were they stock at the time? When I was 18/19... I'd often drive like this through the streets of Miami (very irresponsibly) and I'd constantly get brake fade. I ended up having to replace my rotors and pads at least 3 times in the span of only 2 years. As a much older dude with a child... I'll go 100k miles now without ever changing pads or rotors on a car!
Did you figure out what was causing the overheating? Was it just not enough air velocity to the radiator for the amount of work you were putting on the motor?
Also, yeah... Shorts seems pretty new, so I don't see a lot of forums that support it yet.
I have Grand Am vented discs all round. Grand Am calipers up front and Seville calipers on the rear. They will still overheat a little, but no bad brake fade like stock discs. The radiator was partially clogged with 30 years of rust and sludge. Plus I think the radiator cap would lose pressure from time to time. I fitted a 3 core aluminium radiator since. I even fitted a huge 40cm Mishimoto fan recently for this years drag race (that then got cancelled☹️😭).

Oh dude... that fan is nice... waaaay better than the stock fan. I bet you have no cooling issues with that fan.
It's amazing to me that you'd get brake fade from that upgrade, but I guess it makes sense... you were pushing that car HARD. There's still better options (I have the Grand Am brake upgrade now too), but I wonder if there isn't a way we can more easily duct air towards the disk brakes from the front...

Old man... (hahaah... I feel the same way you do), most people watch videos on their phone. That's why everyone is going to shorts format like what you see on X and TikTok (to be clear, I don't use TikTok). Almost everyone in this world has cell phones, including people who live in mud huts in New Delhi (I am serious). But very few people have home computers anymore... or even tablets anymore. So this seems to be the format of the future.
Like you, I prefer landscape (like TVs / computer monitors), but the world is going vertical...
The fan is in a "pusher" config. The original Fiero fan is still behind the radiator and works normally. The Mishimoto helps in town and at low speeds, and is switched manually. It's original idea was to keep the motor cooler while lining up for the drag runs. But I haven't got to test that yet...
For Patrick: please share the code you use for posting shorts. (I use what is shown on the page Pff code, but have to erase the "s" on the https. And then, half the time it doesn't work?)
For the discussion on vertical or horizontal, l just like the fact that shorts are easy to experiment with and don't overload my computer/editing capacity to pruduce. They're fun!

Todd, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever for video to go "vertical". Our eyes are not located one above the other, they are located beside each other. We naturally see more from side to side than we do up and down. Can you imagine if we went to an IMAX theater and discovered the screen had been turned on its side! There's absolutely no valid reason why cell phones can't be held in the "landscape" orientation while shooting and/or viewing a video.

Rafe, please fill me in. How is it that the orientation of the video makes any difference in how taxing it might be to produce for your computer? Is it simply because the actual size of the video image is 1/3 the size of standard horizontal video? If so, it's definitely not a sacrifice in video quality that I wish to make with my own videos. In the last couple of years, I've been uploading upscaled 1920x1080 video (to 2560x1440) to take full advantage of the superior encoder that YouTube uses with that size (and up) video.

Rafe, it's actually pretty simple. Compare your original URL with the one that I created for the same video.
Thanks Patrick for the infos👍 I'll try to edit my original message later after work to get the vids to embed. For the "fun" side of doing shorts, I have pretty crappy footage most of the time. So the shorts let me zoom in on just the interesting bits of the whole image. Also, a 15 to 60 second vid is so much quicker/easier to produce, without killing my computer. (And even then, I get lag when editing more than one vid track + sound track. (Crap computer.) Plus look at the vues, my "normal vids" are boring and not even 60 people take the time to watch. The best short I have (20k+ vues) is me racing the green beetle (cox). The original "long" vid, 3 minutes, only got 300 vues, and nobody goes back to see the whole race. The only normal (horizontal format) vid that got me any "traction" was when I raced a well known french youtuber with his red Mk2 VW Golf. Plus my 3rd ever video produced that is nothing more than a collection of drag racing shorts. Which was fun to do by the way, and wasn't even produced on proper editing software.

Hahaha... Patrick. I am NOT disagreeing with you. I agree with absolutely everything you're saying... seriously. But I am laughing because you're becoming a grumpy old man about this. This is what all the kids do today. Look, I get it... it drives me nuts too... I absolutely do not like it. But again... the overwhelming vast majority of kids today... which as an old man myself now, includes everyone from teens to people in their early 30s... they all have cell phones. Almost none of them have home computers. These videos, they access them through social media. All the social media sites are specifically designed to be used vertically. For the same reason why Gen-Zs and younger Millennials don't eat cereal anymore (because they don't want to have to wash the bowl and spoon), is the same reason why they don't want to flip the phone sideways for a 1 minute video.

Google did a study and discovered that they were losing audience to platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter. That was because the majority of audiences were using smart phones and shifting away from desktop computers and tablets. In order to compete with this, they created the "Shorts" program... and specifically, "Shorts" are given a significantly higher priority (and a larger audience) than normal YouTube videos. There's a 4 to 1 ratio for people watching shorts compared to normal aspect YouTube videos.
.
Again, you and I agree... back in the early 2000s... remember how it was a thing where people made fun of people who filmed videos vertically? You don't hear that anymore. The companies just embraced it, and now it's the thing. Rafe is just doing what the audience wants. So I think what we need to do... is as a group fund him with two GoPros... one mounted vertical, and one mounted horizontal for the PFF'ers who want to watch them horizontally!

Yes please!😃 I film with an old smartphone and a 50€ Amazon sportcam. I would love a real GoPro ☺️👍👍👍

I think that's an indication of the shrinking attention span of the general public, more than anything else. Sad.
Patrick: or maybe it's just the way the nuro-typical brain works? Being on the "spectrum" (autist asperger - old fashoned term, no longer used), I tend to watch all of a video if it interesses me. Even if it's not my "cup of tea", I will still try to see though to the end out of respect for the person who created the clip.
For my shorts, don't worry, I've kind of used up my ideas for the moment. After friday's post, I'll be going back to my usual (boring) format. My 60 fans will be so pleased😉

No, it's not that. Google has intentionally geared the algorithm to favor shorts.
Significantly more people watch shorts now than normal videos, and if you have shorts, you are far more likely to get traffic and viewers from "Shorts" videos than from normal YouTube videos.
People just do not have traditional computers anymore, and all the mobile platforms and websites are designed vertically... it's just what it is. We're old Patrick... people don't do things anymore the way they used to.
Google has intentionally geared the algorithm to favor shorts...
...because YouTube's own stats indicate that viewing time drops off for most videos after the first minute or so. Look at the YouTube stats for your own videos. My uploaded videos are the same. Young(er) people generally have short(er) attention spans. YouTube is catering to them with these "shorts".

My short answer is "yes," I agree with you, it's true... if people aren't seeing what they want immediately, or it's not attention grabbing enough (needs explosions and car chases), then they tune in to something else. We are getting closer and closer to "Ouch my Balls"
But that's not why YouTube created the shorts... they created the shorts because everyone ELSE already did, and they're trying to keep up. The main point I'm trying to make is that if Rafe wants to monetize today... he almost certainly has to engage in shorts videos.
But I think I have a solution...

This is turning into a chicken or egg debate... but YouTube would not have created something/anything "because everyone ELSE already did" unless their own research indicted it would be more of a revenue generator.

That "balls" clip no doubt rocks the world of grade schoolers!

Rafe, it's funny listening to you talk to yourself while on the track. I would do the same thing while autocrossing... "That was good, don't f*ck up now..." although I think I was doing it in my head, but I'm not sure.
Yes, I did talk a lot during that trackday. The only thing I didn't say to myself was: "Watch the damn oil pressure gauge!" There were quite a few really fast track prepped cars that session. You can see them when I pull into the paddock. Maybe I was a little stressed going up against them? Hence the constant bla bla.
