Have you tried turning your phone horizontally? Seriously!

I don't normally view the site on my Android phone, but I was curious about this, so I had a look. When I held the phone vertically and tapped on a thumbnail image, the image didn't change but the site wanted me to log in. Strange. However, when I turned the phone horizontally and tapped the thumbnail, the thumbnail image enlarged as it's supposed to do. I'll stick to using my PC for access.

CLICK FOR FULL SIZE

Interesting, that does work, so I will be doing that when I need to instead of reloading the page as a desktop site. Yeah I use my phone 99% of the time, I like computers, but can't drag my PC out to the garage while I'm working, etc.

I would like an email notification button at least on every reply I make to a topic I started, several times I submit a new topic but forget to check that and end up not being able to get email notifications on my topic (including the topic I just posted now, "Oil in cylinder 5", if there were any way for that to get enabled for me, I'd be glad)

Be glad then. Either select that option when you type out your opening post (below the text box... Email Notification)... or afterwards...Top left corner... Subscribe to Topic

Odd...

I went to the wayback machine as well and restored every single image that was on there from PFF. I actually wrote a program that automated that. So it's kinda strange there apparently are still images there that I hadn't restored before... What post was it you restored the images for?

it gave me following message "Thread added to My Subscriptions"

What does that do ? Is it going to give me an email message when this post is added to ?

On page 1, I asked if it was possible to do something like this. Thanks for any info.

I've never used it. But yes, as far as I know, you'll get an email notice whenever someone responds to that particular thread. I wasn't aware of this feature myself until relatively recently, when someone told me about it.

John, I've posted a lot of images here over the decades. I tried what you did when the images originally disappeared. I was hoping that the Wayback Machine would be able to re-supply the missing images that I could no longer find the originals of on my own hard drives. Well... all I can say is that for me it was a bitter disappointment. Every thread I've looked up of mine using the Wayback Machine, the missing images are still missing. I've supplied an example.

Here's the original 2013 thread, with two missing images in my first post - Alternator pulley sizes seem to vary in diameter, which caused a problem...

And here's the same thread captured by the Wayback Machine on January 28, 2021. (Note: This date was well before the images disappeared from PFF.)

The two images are still missing. Interestingly enough, further down the thread, the one remaining image (which I had originally linked to from Dodgerunner's site) is hosted by Photobucket. How ironic is that!

This was a few years ago. I think most of the images I restored were from 3rd party hosters during the time I could not get Image poster to work no matter what I tried.

Yea, definately a lot of images missing on Wayback, but it has let me recover some over time.

My build thread covers my Fieroi arriving as a piece of crap on a flat bed tow truch, through a restore, a 3800 swap ect, documenting everything along the way. Years of work and documenting each step. So, I also went to wayback, and manually entered each page of my build thread, and had it scrape them. In the unforseen event something happens to the forum, like the loss of all of those images recently, there will be a backup. I also went as far as backing up each page of my build thread locally, and have a copy in the cloud as well.

Yes, that was the "irony" that I had referred to in my previous thread. I had diligently uploaded all my images using PIP over the years, because uploaded images were supposed to be safe forever here when uploaded in this manner. <sigh>

Try turning the phone horizontal, the verticle version of the site has some drawbacks, the horizontal version works much more like on a PC, you can open up a search window, then go back to verticle and use it.

Ummm... Cliff, I don't know what you're referring to.

[EDIT] The only thing I can think of, is that possibly you can't see the Photobucket hosted image in that thread. Is that it? If so, you need the Photobucket Fix.

Check the source of the image.

The photobucket fix hasn't been necessary for quite some time now.

Okay, I was a bit surprised because I thought I had checked "the source" previously. I also thought that the image (that I had copied the URL) from Dodgerunner's 2007 thread was hosted by Photobucket. I guess it must've originally been, before it was uploaded to the PFF server at some point.

This is the URL of the image that still appears in my (and Dodgerunner's) thread (minus https://)...

images.fiero.nl/photobucket/albums/b226/dodgerunner/85GT/brkt-done.jpg

And this is the URL of one of the images that no longer appears (minus https://)...

images.fieroforum.com/2012/pulley1.jpg

So Cliff, it appears that images that were stored at images.fiero.nl have survived, whereas images that were stored at images.fieroforum.com (and depending on year designation) haven't. Is that correct? If so, what years have been devastated the most?

images.fiero.nl and images.fieroforum.com are one and the same server. They have always been placeholders for the true location of the images. The year designation is what actually determined where the images were stored. At some point, quite a few years worth of images were stored on the US server. But then I started moving over those images to my server in the Netherlands. That was quite a slow process. At some point I temporarily stopped moving those images because, well, life got in the way.

And then the US server ceased to exist out of nowhere. By then, there were still a few years worth of images (if I recall correctly, 2012, 2013 and part of 2014) that hadn't been transferred yet to my NL server. And those are the images missing now. It's about 18% of all images stored on my server, but that still accounts to about 53,000 images. But, of those 53,000, only 10,000 images are from images outside of T/OT. So in reality, only 10,000 important images are gone. That seems like a lot (and it probably is), but it's only 10,000 images of a total of 275,000 images still on my server.

Anybody can see most (like 95%) of all Photobucket images without a watermark. Reason being is because my server is mirroring them.

I'm pretty sure that plenty of images with a 2015 designation in the URL have also disappeared.

[EDIT] Yeah, it took me no time at all to find an example. There are almost a dozen missing 2015 images in that thread alone!

I am a computer tech, and trust me I tried it all, firewall settings, tried on my laptop and on the desktop, uninstall/reinstall ect, Here is a video here is a video I posted for Cliff back in the day showing that it was not working. Clearly something is wrong when PIP uploads the images, reports successful, and that direct link then is a 404. At that point I had no choice but to fin a solution that worked for putting photos in my build thread.

Here is a second, longer version trying to post an image here on the forum:

The years were from the top of my head. Which, due to age, is by no means an accurate method of recalling data. 😁

I just checked and it's in fact a small part of 2013, all of 2014, and most of 2015 that are missing.

That looks like either a firewall problem or a proxy problem. You said you tried changing firewall settings. But were you also behind a corporate firewall perhaps?

BTW, are you able to post images using the "new" Upload Media button?

Cliff, as mentioned I am a computer tech. I ran an IT department for a large company back in the day. I managed an ISP, I have built hundreds of PC's, configured corporate networks, written software in VBScript and DotNET.... yadda yadda...

This was on my home PC & Laptop. At the time I was not using a Proxy at home. One P{C was connected Cat5 and my laptop on WiFi. I had been using PIP for a few years, one day it just stopped working (Same OS & install). It stopped working for about a year for me. That is when I used 3rd party software and lost some photos I had to dig back up from WayBack machine. I then upgraded, fresh install of Windows 10, still PIP would not work. A few months later, it started working again.

If it were a proxy or firewall problem, why would PIP report that the upload was successful, and provide the URL to the image on the server?

I have no problems whatsoever with the new [Media Upload]

I want a Pennock T-shirt to wear to my first Fiero gathering. Or any little car show where I might take my Fiero.

Pennock's has shirts with Cliff's remake Fiero logo, bumper stickers, mouse pads, and mugs, at the link PFF merchandise at the very bottom of the page.

Not a proxy or firewall on your end, but your provider's. For instance, back in the day AOL had a very aggressive proxy. It would result in AOL users adding a post to an existing thread, but that post wouldn't show up for hours.

The fact that you mention it stopped working on all your devices from one day to the other for 10 months, after which it started working again, makes me believe that coincided with me changing server locations. The location where (new) images are stored changed about every year or so, which is reflected in the settings file PIP retrieves when you start it. But only the storage location changed - not the download URL (because the download URL was always images.fieroforum.com/something).

So if - due to some proxy - PIP was retrieving an old, cached version of the settings at startup, it would save uploaded images to the wrong location. It would succeed however since that location still existed. However, nobody would be able to retrieve it since the forum software would be unable to find it.

Cliff, AOL.... YIKES.... that is NOT Internet I have always taken a direct path to the Internet..... No AOL, Prodigy, ect.

I doubt it was any kind of proxy on my ISP's end. I have used the same ISP for the past 20 years here at my home. Comcast/Xfinity. It is one of the largest providers in the United States, and cable based. They are not know to block anything that I am aware of. Though they will send you a nasty email for downloading certain torrents..... (Thats what Proxy's are really for now ) I do have trop turn off my Proxy when I come to PFF, as I can not load the forum with my proxy active

I have stuck with them, as they are by far the fastest provider in my area. I just ran this while posting this message.

I have the middle tier plan for $40 a month. the TB plan is $90, and more than I need at home. Downloading a full 1080 movie in 5 minutes is good enough for me

I actually went from 500/50 mbps to 1000/100 mbps and things got worse. Downloading torrents is now a lot slower (went from 50MB/s to 30MB/s) and it often hangs on buffering when watching YouTube videos. I'm not sure why but I think it has something to do with the DOCSIS version used. I also have fiber going into my home so maybe I'll switch to fiber one of these days.

Perhaps this could be applied only to certain (*cough*) sections.
Maybe "snooze this person for 30 days", or some such.

"Read" receipts for PMs?

Maybe an "online" flag next to a user's name? (With "opt in" by each individual user.)

None of these are critical to my enjoyment, except for maybe the first.
