Might keep in mind that GM was going to use this engine in the pace car till it kept blowing up. They went tonthe SD for reliability.

So if you plan to drive hard it is not the best choice.

Most of these cars were off the street by 10 years due to engine issues. Hence so few left.

Why would you buy a full car if you just want the engine? Buy a junkyard engine and then rebuild it. You should be able to get the engine for $500 or less and spend less than $1000 rebuilding it. Not sure why you'd buy a $6000 car to pull the engine and then rebuild the engine anyway?

Also if you're worried about the "upside down" embossing, it would be much easier to just cut the top off of the plenum or the valve cover and then flip it over and reweld it (aluminum). Then grind the weld seams smooth and paint.

That was the one thing preventing me from doing it. If I could actually get one of those engines shipped to my house (complete, with everything I need), I would do it. But it's just another project, and I need to finish what I'm doing. For that car though... there are lots of those convertible GTs available, and that one was less than perfect, so I wasn't too sad about stripping it, to be quite honest.

Nothing here on this board of course, makes financial sense... but rebuilding an already known / good running engine means you're going to already have good parts and less concern for things breaking or having to source parts other than wear items like pistons, rings, and bearings.
