Industry insiders say six decades of oil exploration have made the Niger Delta one of the most polluted places on earth and damaged a lot, including farmlands.
Polluted by the oil industry: Life in Nigeria's Ogoniland
quote
The Ogoniland area of southern Nigeria is one of the most polluted places on Earth. The crops are burnt to a cinder, ash and tar smother the land and the wells are polluted with oil, making the water totally undrinkable. Entire communities have suffered as their way of life has been destroyed by the oil industry.

I don't know why rinselberg won't admit that he does not want to save the planet. He calls CO2 a pollutant. Imagine, the millions of old depleted batteries at the dump. I guess I should have said billions, world wide.
I don't know why rinselberg is advocating deplorable child labor to make those batteries. I guess rinselberg has not thought about how those children have to wash the mined cobalt in rivers, polluting them. Handling the cobalt with their bare hands. Perhaps rinselberg does not know that one can be poisoned merely by handling lethal material. By absorption through the skin.
I don't know why rinselberg wants to ask China for batteries and solar panels, so we can survive.
I also do not know why rinselberg thinks that wind and solar will provide for all our energy needs, plus desires.
I've never said that the U.S. can transition all the way to Zero or Very Low Carbon Emissions "overnight".

Those are great questions, and they come straight from the great heartland of America. There's not another post office address that says "America" more clearly than "Bandera, TX". Fortunately, the answers are equally clear. Start with the "bullets":
The Biden administration on Thursday [September 15, 2022] launched [a] floating wind turbine initiative that includes leasing enough deep-water acreage to support 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035.
The administration also set a goal of cutting floating wind farm costs by more than 70% to $45/MWh by the middle of the next decade through the Floating Offshore Wind Shot effort.
Clean energy advocates said the initiative would boost offshore wind development. “Paired with the recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act, these targets will dramatically reduce costs for offshore wind development, allowing deployment of clean energy at the scale needed to take action to address climate change,” American Clean Power Association CEO Heather Zichal said in a statement.
Moreover, "There is about 1,500 GW of fixed-bottom offshore wind potential in the United States and 2,800 GW of floating offshore wind potential, according to a study by the National Renewable Energy laboratory.
However, only about 40 GW of fixed-bottom offshore wind is under development in the United States and 0.1 GW of floating capacity has been deployed globally, according to the Biden administration.
While the U.S. has been slow to develop fixed-bottom offshore wind, the Biden administration aims to be a leader in floating offshore wind technology by building on its previous goal of adding 30 GW of offshore wind by the end of this decade.
The Floating Offshore Wind Shot, led by the departments of Energy, Interior, Commerce and Transportation, aims to slash the cost of floating wind technology.
“Achieving this cost target will require focused research, development, and demonstration to catalyze continued cost reductions, with a focus on manufacturing, engineering, and continued increases of offshore wind turbine capacity,” the White House said.
Bringing floating offshore wind technology to scale will unlock opportunities for offshore wind power off the coasts of California and Oregon, in the Gulf of Maine and elsewhere where the water is too deep for fixed-bottom wind farms, according to the White House."
Moving beyond that, "Clean energy advocates in California, which last month adopted a 25 GW offshore wind goal, praised the moves by the Biden administration.
'A moonshot target, with interim goals and tangible, targeted research and development funding are all key parts of the offshore wind puzzle that need to be put into place to help stave off the worst impacts of global warming,' Laura Deehan, Environment California state director, said in a statement.
The administration’s floating offshore wind target provides long-term regulatory certainty that will drive investments toward manufacturers, ports and shipbuilders, Liz Burdock, Business Network for Offshore Wind president and CEO, said in a statement.
'The future of offshore wind lies in deeper waters requiring floating technology, and this comprehensive plan sets the U.S. on a path to become a global leader in this cutting-edge industry and a major exporter of expertise and supplies,' Burdock said.
The Department of Energy on Thursday said it is offering nearly $50 million in research, development, and demonstration funding for floating wind technology, partly through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The funding includes $31 million for the second phase of an Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy program called Aerodynamic Turbines, Lighter and Afloat, with Nautical Technologies and Integrated Servo-control, or ATLANTIS."
Some people say that Direct Air Capture or Direct Carbon Capture needs to be developed and deployed at scale. These are envisioned as systems that remove CO2 from the air and sequester it in some way (underground) so that the CO2 does not contribute to global warming.
Other people say this is a rabbit hole that will not do good, or not do enough good to make it worthwhile.
The not so distant future (year 2100?) could see large fleets of aircraft, operating on a daily schedule, to spray "stuff" into the atmosphere that would effectively "air condition" planet Earth by reflecting sunlight into space. Or spraying "stuff" onto the ice packs of Greenland and Antarctica that would help the ice stay frozen. (The remaining land ice that hasn't already become part of the water in the oceans.) These fleets of aircraft would have zero carbon or very low carbon energy to power them. Aviation fuel produced from farm waste. Green hydrogen. Or electric-powered aircraft, with onboard batteries charged from Wind and Solar. Or fission reactors, if there can be a nuclear renaissance. Or fusion reactors, if there's that much progress with nuclear fusion. Or from a massive enlargement of GeoThermal. Or from Orbiting Solar Energy Farms. (The European Space Agency, I think, just committed some money to this idea. I think the Chinese are also "into" it.) Or from large, floating solar electricity farms that could be offshore, or floated on lakes and ponds where people wouldn't object to it. Or from solar electricity farms that coexist with farming, with crops that can tolerate the shade created by the solar electricity panels. Or... there was something else, but now I can't think of it. Maybe it was Genetically Modified organisms that produce electricity or combustible fuels.
The fallacy of this meme is that it's about what has already happened, instead of what is happening now and what is going to happen.

Canada Silver Cobalt Works Inc is a dual-focus precious metals and battery metals junior mining company with a valuable portfolio of critical energy metals projects based in safe and ecologically responsible jurisdictions.
The company recently discovered a major high-grade silver vein system at Castle East located 1.5 km from its 100%-owned, past-producing Castle Mine near Gowganda in the prolific and world-class silver-cobalt mining district of Northern Ontario [Canada.]
Canada Silver Cobalt Works has completed a 60,000m drill program aimed at expanding the size of the deposit with an update to the resource estimate underway.
"Canada Silver Cobalt Works expands Greenfield lithium project in Ontario via new staking [claims]" November 23, 2022.

The land package in the Cochrane district now spans 230 square kilometres (sq km) and the new claims are contiguous with the original deal, which was announced in November this year. That original letter of intent (LOI) has now been amended to include additional claims staked by both parties.
The land is contiguous to Power Metal’s Case Lake lithium property, about five kilometers northwest of its West Joe Dyke and Main Dyke areas, which recently reported drill results that included 1.86% lithium over 19.00 metres. . . .
Canada Silver Cobalt’s flagship silver-cobalt Castle mine and 78 sq km Castle property feature strong exploration upside for silver, cobalt, nickel, gold, and copper.
With underground access at the fully owned Castle mine, an exceptional high-grade silver discovery at Castle East, a pilot plant to produce cobalt-rich gravity concentrates, a processing facility (TTL Laboratories) in the town of Cobalt, and a proprietary hydrometallurgical process known as Re-2Ox, Canada Silver Cobalt is positioned to become a Canadian leader in the silver-cobalt space.

The large fleets of aircraft spraying "stuff" into the air or onto the remaining ice sheets by year 2100 is radical. It could be (and is being) described as "geo-engineering". It's something I am speculating about, based on various news reports and the like that I have seen during the most recent several years.
I think a common idea about it among climate researchers and their fans (like me), is that it would be a last resort, if whatever happens between now and year 2100 in the way of climate mitigation—reducing carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions—is seen as not enough to "keep things cool." So that whatever risks would be incurred by spraying human engineered materials ("stuff") into the air or onto the remaining ice sheets could be framed for decision makers as less worrisome than the risks of not resorting to this kind of geo-engineering.
I said "a large fleet of airplanes." Unmanned aircraft, I would think. It could be (unmanned) ships. Or some other onshore or offshore setup for disseminating the "stuff" into the air. Or into the sea to accelerate the growth of photosynthesizing plankton to take more CO2 out of the atmosphere. Or to stimulate the formation of sunlight-reflecting clouds.
There are any number of these ideas.
What kind of stuff? It could well involve very small particles or droplets of fluid that are the products of nanotechnology. "Nanomaterials."

Atop the Mauna Loa volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, a little more than two miles above sea level, a 124-foot aluminum tower has been collecting carbon dioxide measurements nearly every hour, every day, for over 60 years.
That stopped on Sunday night, when Mauna Loa erupted and the flow of lava cut off power to the monitoring lab there. On Thursday, lava was still moving downhill from the volcano, overtaking roads, but posing few risks to nearby communities.
It was a rare interruption in the data collection that has produced the world’s longest running continuous record of the rising levels of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. . . .
In the late 1950s, [Charles David Keeling] developed the first technique for making accurate measurements of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
His first Mauna Loa measurements, conducted as part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography program, recorded an average carbon dioxide concentration of 313 parts per million, meaning that for every one million air particles, 313 of them are carbon dioxide molecules.
Now, levels have peaked around 421 parts per million, the greatest concentration in at least 4 million years. Last year, carbon dioxide emissions totaled 36.3 billion tons, the highest level in history.
Without drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the planet is on track to warm by an average of 2.1 to 2.9 degrees Celsius, compared with preindustrial levels, by 2100, according to a recent report issued by the United Nations.
That is far higher than the aspirational goal that governments endorsed in the landmark 2015 Paris climate agreement, and it crosses the threshold beyond which scientists say the risk of climate catastrophes increases significantly. . . .
Mauna Loa eruption interrupts the world's most famous atmospheric carbon dioxide observatory
Could the below earth magma spewing out of earth zits create enough lava that flows into the Pacific ocean raise the sea levels even MORE? 😲

the green six miles How fitting. Green. I remember, do you (?), when green in the face donated sickness. Tell us illustrious rinselberg, who came up with the thought that climate zealots thought 'green' would sell ?
I digressed, sorry. I hate and will not begin a sentence/thought/verbal communication with 'so'. Your thoughts were that if the big diesel big azz 18 wheelers stopped six miles away from the docks, we could save the planet, six miles at a time. Or, the big azz 18 wheelers could have an electric 'green' motor to allow the supply chain to function.
Where are you going to get a big azz 18 wheeler with a dino powered engine and also an electric motor, ?
Oooh ooh, ask me, please. It's called the diesel electric powered solution. You may have heard of a locomotive. They got zhit done, seemingly impossible zhit in the oil fields I worked on all my life.
Do you really think wind and solar will make us worry free comfortable ?
Do I force you to go to my church ? Don't force us to worship your green god. You do you, and I will do me. You can't save the planet making us help. You can though save the last six miles of the world by doing your part, helped by all the other green worshipers. Saving half the world is better than nothing.
Oh, yea, solving Global Warming is simple simple simple. Just bring back R12 freon, which it was said would deliver a new ice age.

The Mauna Loa site was the first such observatory for monitoring how many carbon dioxide molecules are at ground level (it's essentially at ground level) in the atmosphere.
A number of other such facilities were subsequently created all around the world, and so, this volcanic eruption is not disrupting the continuity of that data or causing any significant loss of data.

I am well aware of that history from 2009, involving the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in England.

A team comprised of geological and environmental science researchers from Stanford University has been studying the impact that early European exploration had on the New World and have found evidence that they say suggests the European cold period from 1500 to 1750, commonly known as the Little Ice Age, was due to the rapid decline in native human populations shortly after early explorers arrived.
Now take that article in the light of the fact that there are more trees in North America now than any time in the last 150 years (a fact that I have backed up many times on this forum)
No matter what happens on this old blue ball, it is bad and it is because of white American males.
What they want you to believe, without thinking about it, is that 500 years ago, the indigenous population of North America had chopped down so many trees that they caused global warming but the white explorers killed so many IPs that it caused an Ice Age.

Most of the slaves were brought over by the Portuguese, and most of them went to Brazil. Those who were brought to North America were bought by the English. The United States did not exist until the late 18th century. The Northern states had banned slavery very early in the 19th century and the south seceded in the middle of the 19th century. So, by 1861 the US had not had slavery in about 50 years. The CSA was not the USA.
The USA fought against England and the CSA, the two countries who were responsible for slavery in North America. And we defeated both of them.

that's a big one I'll argue and get links with you later....but no it didnt start about slavery, Lincoln did that later. It started because of taxation and federal government over-reach. Lincoln himself owned slaves.
Some are just "naturally born" with a pre-disposition to tell the government to **** off

Think for a minute about what we call "the Latin rhythm", the rumba, samba, guaguanco, etc., the music of Cuba and Brazil. Those have nothing to do with Italy and very little to do with Spain, Portugal or any other Latin speaking country. Those are African, primarily Yoruban rhythms that came to the western hemisphere as a result of the Transatlantic slave trade.

This research is focused on the years from about 1500 to 1750, when the CO2 in the air all around the world was somewhere below or close to just 280 ppm. This is known by various evidence including air samples from that time, which have been preserved as air bubbles in glacial ice. The ice has been "cored out" and analyzed to measure the CO2 in the air bubbles and zero in on the years when the air was trapped within the newly frozen ice.
The latest data confirms CO2 levels are now hovering closely around 421 parts per million—the greatest concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide in at least 4 million years (by various kinds of evidence), and significantly more than the 280 ppm or under that was prevalent during the Little Ice Age in Europe.
So, 420 ppm today, vs 280 (or below) ppm during the Little Ice Age in Europe.
This Little Ice Age research does not undermine or detract from the "big picture" from climate researchers about greenhouse gas emissions and continuing and predictably accelerating global warming. Neither this Little Ice Age research or the current "big picture" are silly. But this is:
A "refresher" on the Silly concept.

I'm not trying to "win" anything, but it is important for everyone to understand that the USA played a very small part in the history of slavery.
Of course I think most people understand that Africans captured Africans and sold them to Europeans. Asians also caught Europeans and sold them to other Asians. The indigenous population of the western hemisphere did the same.

Now, here’s the really funny part. The proof that Mary Johnson was a free woman is right there in the 1860 census, the very source being offered as evidence that she was a slave. In other words, the problem here is that the blogger in question simply doesn’t know how to read the document.
Here’s the page in question.

See the very top, where it says “SCHEDULE 1.—Free Inhabitants ? That’s sort of an indicator that all the folks in that list were, you know, free inhabitants of Springfield. The 1860 census counted slaves separately. You’re not going to find any slaves officially listed in a census list of free inhabitants.
Of course, you’re not likely to find many slaves documented in the census lists for Illinois at all, since Illinois was a free state.Of course, you’re not likely to find any slaves documented in the census lists for Illinois at all, since Illinois was a free state.

So, you would have us believe, ..., Illinois was a free state, yet, didn't have many slaves documented on the census. How many were ... not declared, to flow with the political winds ? Was there a place on the census to claim slaves ?
What would rinselberg think ? Mr Abraham's census report. Is that because the servants had to stay there, at Lincoln's residence ?
You are almost as fun as my sex life. I will let you imagine of how great it is, .

I don't think Abraham Lincoln ever owned any slaves. I agree with the article linked by rinselberg.
I happen to have a copy of a similar document from the 1900 census in Alabama which lists Victoria Richardson, a 24 years old black female, as a servant. Why do I have a copy of this document? Because the family she lived with was my family.
