It's sadly kind of funny... but it's rarely something that actually happens. Most of these people who say they want to move after Republicans win an election are so ignorant of global policies, that they just assume they can up and move to another country. They have absolutely no clue how difficult the process is to relocate without sponsorship (such as with an overseas job, or marriage of someone who's already a citizen, etc.). They just make the assumption that because our policies are so lax, that every other country is too.
I just tried searching for an article I read from 2018, but under Trump's last presidential win, the number of people who actually moved, was indistinguishable from the number of people who move annually, as if it had absolutely no difference whatsoever.
I'd have to assume that much of it is part of the emotional healing process... they experience loss, and want people to sympathize with them, perhaps even say... "No... don't go..." whatever. But these people end up not moving. I even had one of my friends say he wanted to move to Canada.. and then after discovering how difficult it was (aside from if you're a refugee from a 3rd world country), he totally changed his mind.
I did have ONE friend that left when Obama was re-elected. He said the country was being destroyed, but I think it was a confluence of other things. The poor guy had lost his wife from cancer a couple of years before, and his daughter had been killed in a car accident, and his son estranged himself from him, and he had met this really nice lady from Ecuador, so he ended up selling his house, and moving to Ecuador. I think he would have still moved, even if Ronald Reagan came back from the dead and won reelection in a magical 3rd term.
