Carbon fiber is pretty cool, but I get ALOT of usage
out of aluminum:

I/E: Body panels, engine coil bracket, dipstick holder,
seat anchor brackets, vacuum line replacements,
headlight holders, battery tray, rear decklid vents,
radiator support, sail panel replacement, shifter console,
doorhandles.............the potential is fairly limitless.

Plus, I can get supplies of it LOCALLY, and readily
for a decent amount of $.

I really need to get a house so I can practice welding the stuff.

Whelp,

I decided to nix the "old" neo-interior (version 1.0)
and the dash to further reduce some poundage....

Ultimately, the AGM battery / w cover will go here.........

Just a couple of feet of battery cable to keep the weight down,
plus no more opening/ closing the decklid to connect/ disconnect
the battery.

The console glove box gets replaced with this.....

Passenger side......

Dash free zone, yo.............

Passenger door, a blank canvas....waiting for inspiration.

Thanks to LOTS of overtime at work,
I FINALLY got to buy some goodies...........

Hella battery kill switch.

Just 5 oz. .........

Here are some mirrors from summit that I had a hunch would be lighter.
( I REALLY want to put these on the A-team van as well.)

Here they are on the car..........

Bonus! The mirrors are sealed, so no more hornet nests in there!

Just under 12 oz. ............( The factory ones are roughly 2. 7 lbs. )

Getting parts ready for a SHORTER, LIGHTER, exhaust system
without the factory restriction...........

Only 12 inchs long, and fairly light for the money..........

About 5 lbs of muffler for $24. vs buying
a 2 lb rebuildable race muffler for $200.

Heres an inside peek, pretty cool..............

Bought some aluminum samples from online metals.com
to chose for my rear decklid......

2024, Awesome grade of aluminum ( strength to weight wise ).
I'll have to order some samples of 6061 when I get a chance.

Hey, do you have a part number or website link for those side mirrors?

Anyone mention a chop top yet? Finding DOT approved side windows may be a bit of a hassle. I wonder if what you cut out would be more than what you add in to make it work ?

Blacktree,

here's that Summit part number:

CIP-19100

(CIPA replacement mirrors, dual sport.Black or chrome.)

$ 20.75

Note: Dont use the retarded self tappers that come with it.
I bought some grade 5 ( or is it 8???) bolts from Lowes,
and added some aluminum to help support and fill in the
slight gap from the different mirror base sizes.

Chris Hodson,

several people HAVE mentioned doing a choptop.
( I'd never do it because I'm 6' 3", MAYBE if I were shorter.)

There SHOULD be some decent weight savings.......
( Less metal, less glass)

Adding fiberglass to the body to compensate for the chop
MIGHT be counter productive. IMHO
( Regardless, Chop tops DO look wicked, though.)

-Saved 7lbs by changing to smaller starter for a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, direct bolt on.
-The new intake I just did is 8.6lbs lighter than the stock one (top and mid section)
-The mirrors I use weight a mere .4lbs each, they are 3.6lbs lighter than stock.
-Removed 15lbs by taking away the rear bumper metal support.

If you referring to me, I don't know because I didn't weight the car before. But so far I've taken 385lbs off the car.

Is that your Murci or one of the others? 3350 is a lot of weight gained over stock.

Happy july 4, peeps.....
I finally got tired of looking at my big $70. sheet of makrolon collecting dust,
and finally decided to take the "plunge"...................

Open sesame.......

Call it either old urethane adhesive, or butyl tape.......
I call it the devil's taffy.
Ten minutes to remove window glass, about TWO hours
pulling and cleaning this mess OUT................ @#&!!&?!!

I probably could of sped things up a bit with some "goo gone",
or adhesive remover. But, I THOUGHT it would all just pull out
in one or two big "go's". Yeah riiiight.

More devil taffy fun.........

yum, yum, who wants some???

Money shot, baby.....

Heres the replacement.....

( 4 lbs of polycarbonate goodness.....)

This piece will get HIDDEN bolts, and sealed up
with automotive "GOOP".
( "Amazing GOOP" is THEE BEST adhesive I've ever used.
I have even repaired a crankcase leak on a 2-stroke engine
with it, this stuff is copacetic.)

With the nomenclature pulled from yesterday
and today, I've removed 22 1/2 pounds.

Almost forgot,
the gutted rear decklid weighed 38 lbs.
Hopefully, the NEW decklid will weigh under 10 lbs.

Update: old 38 lb gutted REAR decklid
( Warning! pics are NOT for the sqeemish!)

Aluminum for NEW decklid arrived!
( The ups dude almost had a cow lugging
it up to my apartment.)

Behold the glorious bounty and rejoice......

After hours upon hours of measuring and measuring AGAIN ( ovay!)
cutting aluminum and plexiglass with a TWITCHY dremmel......( sonofa )
and an unintentional crinkle from bending the metal too fast......
( it took 2 days to get that mofo dent out)

I FINALLY get to the final stages of the uber decklid.

The right corner still needs a slight trim ( sorry commas arent working)
and the button heads on the hood will be hidden with tapered trim
peices once I find the right medium to conceal them with.

I WAS going to grind them down and hide 'em with glazing putty
but they are kind of growing on me. Just alittle.

The ring style hoodpins will be replaced with locking hoodpins
(to match the ones on the front.) and BOTH sets will get painted
body color (maybe....still thinking about it).

Summit wants close to $30. ($ 22.95 + S/H).....so I'll wait to order
something else with the locking hoodpins.
(No one sells the locking style locally anymore.)

Forgot to add this pic.....

The old decklid louvers were steel 1 pounders......
the new ones are aluminum and weigh only a couple of ounces.

The gutted GT wing is cool look'n but still portly....... (7 lbs)
A 1 or 2 lb ducktail would add some eye candy without the weight.
It's kind of under wraps.......but the PERFECT ducktail I want
supposedly weighs TEN pounds!???? ( I called carID three times...
same answer.)
Hint: this ducktail is for a chevrolet.....but NOT the camaro.
I will try to find the ducktail in carbonfiber .
or I will have to make it out of aluminum.
It must be fate or sumthin Because I have repeatedly
seen this specific ducktail around town so OFTEN it's uncanny.
Anywho
the hardwork was worth it though......the hood with hinges
louvers and plexi roughly weighs about 6 lbs.
( I can lift it open with only TWO fingers. A far cry from the
two arm lift/ press from the old decklid. Sweet.)
Ultimately......
a 2 lb ducktail would help keep the whole shebang under 10lb.
( Man.....I cant stop staring at this trunklid. Even if it was an
absolute PITA. )

LOL Sonofjustice, I don't know how your is or if it's worth the work to you, but I just removed 10-20lbs of dirt from my subframe/cradle. No joke, there was a lot in there.
It was pretty full in all the cavities and crevises.

first time i saw this thread.
My autocrosser is down to 2250#
I've taken everything but the drivers door beam.
The only thing installed is a roll bar per classification requirements.
My son's 88 GT is at 2165# but his is carburated and all the wiring is out (over 30#)
here are a few pics of my ride

this pic is with my son's car staged in front of me

Mcguiver3, Thank you for the pics. Excellant detail shots!

Sorry for the looong--- hiatis gentz,

I did'nt think anyone would miss this thread much.
Especially with the punk --- hecklers from the peanut gallery and such.
Regardless, I decided to concentrate more on what to ultimately keep
or remove from the fiero .
Plus, some suspension issues ( upper strut mount bushing worn out, sway bar link),
Clutch problems ( slave bracket cracked, replaced slv. + master),
and body work ( paint, front end spoiler, aluminum hood, lexan windshield )
kept me busy enough to keep procrastinating about posting updates.

Again, my bad to those that care.

Some "before shots" B-pillar.............

Roughly 3 lbs 6 oz.of plastic removed ( BOTH flying buttress windows),
1 lb 4 oz. of fiberglass at B pillar, ( BOTH sides)
one pound 4 onces of aluminum substituted. ( BOTH sides.)

Had a tail wagging good time when I last went for weigh in,
so I did some digg'n........

Found a strut "shim" plate, weighed one pound.....not sure if aluminum
can be substituted ( due to softness), so I left it alone.

Old mount.....

Holy crap on a stick that wore out fast! The entire strut assembly
may look old from Michigan weather, but these struts only have a few
hundred miles on 'em. What the hell....? ( The other side was tight though)

Ironically, the struts were done "professionally" TWICE. The first attempt
I had to sue them because they never got it right. ( FIVE hours I waited for that.)

Thankfully, I got reimbursed to take it to a (somewhat) trusted mechanic.

When I went to the Detroit "parts galore", I was looking at different
configurations that could replace the fieros side beams.

This in titanium could be done.......Kevlar/carbon fiber bar stock maybe???

I had the same problem, new KYB's the PO forgot one of the washer disks on the inside so the strut eventually punched through and made that oblong hole! Some people... But I love this thread, I wouldn't go to most of your lengths being it a DD but all the weight loss I find very interesting, thanks for posting!

Trunk was 18 lbs.

Misc. trunk metal (outer perimeter/ bulk head).......3 lbs

Trunk metal (decklid lock base)............................12.2 oz

Total: 21 lbs / 12.2 oz
Unfortunately, the pics for the starter swap are AWOL.

The Pontiac GTP starter mod (thank you, Pennocks!) ,shaved 8 lbs!

The misc. 2 GAUGE wire that was previously in there was swapped out.
(Back when I used to think BIGGER was ALWAYS better.)

Heres a tally:

Starter......................8lbs

OLD battery cables.....3 lbs

Battery case (plastic)....2 lbs / 13.5 oz.

Wood plank under battery.....1 lb

Misc. wire....................2 oz.

Total: 14 lbs / 15.5 oz
Buuyaaa!

Before I forget, heres where the fiero is weight wise.
(I went yesterday....)

2,100 lbs.

Even though it's gross weight, ( why did'nt I ask for NET???)
I am happy with it. ( For now.)

Side note:

Forgot to mention.........Trunk weather stripping ( 2 lbs)

FRONT weather stripping (2 lbs)

Sun roof weather seal (N/A)

Door weather seals (N/A)

I have'nt replaced the last two suggestions yet,
but they will be eventually.

Lowes / Home depot have a variety of diy weather stripping that is lightweight
and affordable that come in various styles / and shapes.

Took a break from subtracting things.......
redid bumper that banzai tow jockey scuffed up.

LOTS of sandpaper (on sale at ACE hardware),
paint / primer (also, ACE), and 3 days later.......

$15. Still looks pretty good, it's even waxable.
