Anyone mention a chop top yet? Finding DOT approved side windows may be a bit of a hassle. I wonder if what you cut out would be more than what you add in to make it work ?
(CIPA replacement mirrors, dual sport.Black or chrome.)
$ 20.75
Note: Dont use the retarded self tappers that come with it. I bought some grade 5 ( or is it 8???) bolts from Lowes, and added some aluminum to help support and fill in the slight gap from the different mirror base sizes.
-Saved 7lbs by changing to smaller starter for a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, direct bolt on. -The new intake I just did is 8.6lbs lighter than the stock one (top and mid section) -The mirrors I use weight a mere .4lbs each, they are 3.6lbs lighter than stock. -Removed 15lbs by taking away the rear bumper metal support.

Happy july 4, peeps..... I finally got tired of looking at my big $70. sheet of makrolon collecting dust, and finally decided to take the "plunge"...................
Open sesame.......
Call it either old urethane adhesive, or butyl tape....... I call it the devil's taffy. Ten minutes to remove window glass, about TWO hours pulling and cleaning this mess OUT................ @#&!!&?!!
I probably could of sped things up a bit with some "goo gone", or adhesive remover. But, I THOUGHT it would all just pull out in one or two big "go's". Yeah riiiight.
More devil taffy fun.........
yum, yum, who wants some???
Money shot, baby.....
Heres the replacement.....
( 4 lbs of polycarbonate goodness.....)
This piece will get HIDDEN bolts, and sealed up with automotive "GOOP". ( "Amazing GOOP" is THEE BEST adhesive I've ever used. I have even repaired a crankcase leak on a 2-stroke engine with it, this stuff is copacetic.)
Update: old 38 lb gutted REAR decklid ( Warning! pics are NOT for the sqeemish!)
Aluminum for NEW decklid arrived! ( The ups dude almost had a cow lugging it up to my apartment.)
Behold the glorious bounty and rejoice......
After hours upon hours of measuring and measuring AGAIN ( ovay!) cutting aluminum and plexiglass with a TWITCHY dremmel......( sonofa ) and an unintentional crinkle from bending the metal too fast...... ( it took 2 days to get that mofo dent out)
I FINALLY get to the final stages of the uber decklid.
The right corner still needs a slight trim ( sorry commas arent working) and the button heads on the hood will be hidden with tapered trim peices once I find the right medium to conceal them with.
I WAS going to grind them down and hide 'em with glazing putty but they are kind of growing on me. Just alittle.
The ring style hoodpins will be replaced with locking hoodpins (to match the ones on the front.) and BOTH sets will get painted body color (maybe....still thinking about it).
Summit wants close to $30. ($ 22.95 + S/H).....so I'll wait to order something else with the locking hoodpins. (No one sells the locking style locally anymore.)
Forgot to add this pic.....
The old decklid louvers were steel 1 pounders...... the new ones are aluminum and weigh only a couple of ounces.
The gutted GT wing is cool look'n but still portly....... (7 lbs) A 1 or 2 lb ducktail would add some eye candy without the weight. It's kind of under wraps.......but the PERFECT ducktail I want supposedly weighs TEN pounds!???? ( I called carID three times... same answer.) Hint: this ducktail is for a chevrolet.....but NOT the camaro. I will try to find the ducktail in carbonfiber . or I will have to make it out of aluminum. It must be fate or sumthin Because I have repeatedly seen this specific ducktail around town so OFTEN it's uncanny. Anywho the hardwork was worth it though......the hood with hinges louvers and plexi roughly weighs about 6 lbs. ( I can lift it open with only TWO fingers. A far cry from the two arm lift/ press from the old decklid. Sweet.) Ultimately...... a 2 lb ducktail would help keep the whole shebang under 10lb. ( Man.....I cant stop staring at this trunklid. Even if it was an absolute PITA. )

Hmm... I'm guessing Monte Carlo? I love the NASCAR style rear spoilers on those cars.
LOL Sonofjustice, I don't know how your is or if it's worth the work to you, but I just removed 10-20lbs of dirt from my subframe/cradle. No joke, there was a lot in there. It was pretty full in all the cavities and crevises.
first time i saw this thread. My autocrosser is down to 2250# I've taken everything but the drivers door beam. The only thing installed is a roll bar per classification requirements. My son's 88 GT is at 2165# but his is carburated and all the wiring is out (over 30#) here are a few pics of my ride
this pic is with my son's car staged in front of me
Mcguiver3, Thank you for the pics. Excellant detail shots!
Sorry for the looong--- hiatis gentz,
I did'nt think anyone would miss this thread much. Especially with the punk --- hecklers from the peanut gallery and such. Regardless, I decided to concentrate more on what to ultimately keep or remove from the fiero . Plus, some suspension issues ( upper strut mount bushing worn out, sway bar link), Clutch problems ( slave bracket cracked, replaced slv. + master), and body work ( paint, front end spoiler, aluminum hood, lexan windshield ) kept me busy enough to keep procrastinating about posting updates.
Again, my bad to those that care.
Some "before shots" B-pillar.............
Roughly 3 lbs 6 oz.of plastic removed ( BOTH flying buttress windows), 1 lb 4 oz. of fiberglass at B pillar, ( BOTH sides) one pound 4 onces of aluminum substituted. ( BOTH sides.)

Holy crap on a stick that wore out fast! The entire strut assembly may look old from Michigan weather, but these struts only have a few hundred miles on 'em. What the hell....? ( The other side was tight though)
Ironically, the struts were done "professionally" TWICE. The first attempt I had to sue them because they never got it right. ( FIVE hours I waited for that.)
Thankfully, I got reimbursed to take it to a (somewhat) trusted mechanic.

I had the same problem, new KYB's the PO forgot one of the washer disks on the inside so the strut eventually punched through and made that oblong hole! Some people... But I love this thread, I wouldn't go to most of your lengths being it a DD but all the weight loss I find very interesting, thanks for posting!
