I have seen post where its recommended to use synchromesh oil, like penzoil or royal purple. My question is do they mean royal purple 5w-30 motor oil or do they mean royal purple synchormax manual transmission fluid.
I am new to Fieros and the forum, so please pardon my ignorance. I have an 88 with the getrag 5speed. My Haynes guide says use 5w30 of Dextron ii, depending on model. My Chilton's Guide says use 5w30. Here you say use Synchromesh. Can someone clear up the disconnect between the Haynes, Chilton's, and I believe you mentioned GM guidance? I bought Royal Purple 5w30. But will this not protect of lube my transmission properly? I want best of the right fluid to make my new fiero last.
If you want the latest greatest... get some of the Synchromesh fluid that was suggested. It's all pretty much the same quality-wise. Get whatever is cheapest in your area.
Early manual transmissions used 5 w 30 motor oil, but the lubricant specification was later changed. That's probably where the confusion comes in.
The GM Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid is a bit pricey. Usually over $20 per quart. The Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid, often found at AutoZone is supposedly the same for about half the price. Pennzoil is reputed to be the producer of the GM product,.
Anyone here have the 87 or 88 Maintenance Schedule booklet? The correct information is there.
I always thought gear oil went into manual transmissions. Well, a day is never wasted if you learn something new. Thank you, gentlemen for shedding some light on this.

Some even take automatic transmission fluid.
"Manual transmissions use a variety of transmission fluid ranging from regular motor oil to heavyweight hypoid gear oil. A few manufacturers even recommend automatic transmission fluid. It all depends on the vehicle, the tolerances, engineering and the type of driving you most commonly do." Read more: http://www.ehow.com/list_75...s.html#ixzz2tDLKhwUr

On my first Fiero, an 85 GT with a 4 speed, I had a garage replace the clutch when the pressure plate failed. It had only gone 80 miles when the transmission exploded. I later found out that they had filled the transmission with 80/90 weight hypoid gear oil.
Oil engineering is very deep and will surprise you in the equivalencies of motor oil viscosities , for instance, to gear and auto trans fluid. For years I only ran gear oil. The change to the Pennzoil synchromesh helped the synchros greatly and did not leak past the output seals as some warn.
Ok, I went to buy the Royal Purple Synchromesh, and it says on the bottle that it's for manual transmissions. Does that mean that it's heavy 80w90 like I should avoid? Or is it the thin stuff I need (5w30) with the additive to help the Syncros?
