Have been driving my '88 Formula with 58,000 miles for a year now and getting a Code 32 every day.
Finally got tired of that Service Engine Soon (SES) light and pulled the EGR solenoid off and apart.
After repair documented below, I have been SES-free for 2 weeks now.

First checked the two terminals closest to the mounting bracket and got "infinity" Ohms - an open coil.

Then did initial disassembly. Everything looking pretty good, right?

Then this mess

Noticed the broken (corroded off) magnet wire right away

Cleaned up the corrosion with "The Must for Rust" from Home Depot.
Stripped the magnet wire with 1000-grit sandpaper, cut back and stripped insulated leadwire.
Soldered magnet wire to leadwire.
Ohms-checked several times along the way and always got 96.4 Ohms.
Stuffed soldered connection into recess and encapsulated/waterproofed with Plumber's Goop.
Wrapped coil with heavy-duty package tape - one wrap.

Put everything back together and sealed the tube and the rubber cover with Goop to prevent moisture entry.

Hope this helps/encourages someone else to repair his or her EGR Solenoid.

Good to know! That's a three figure part, well worth a little work to fix!

Good job! There isn't much to them so they are easy to repair or make a good one out of parts.

Over a year now (and 7,000 miles later) and still Code 32-free.

I just got a 32 code this morning. Lots of folks from Facebook pointed me in the direction of this thread. Can't wait to tear into my solenoid and do this on my days off.

Zero ohms would be a direct short. I think he meant to say infinite ohms.

My EGR solenoid Code 32 has come back to visit a few times. It has not been consistant in any way. It always happened during a long drive but the next time I would start it up, the light would be out.

I decided that it might be caused by a slight vacuum leak in the unit. Maybe temperatures or humidity or vibration would trigger the code. I got a brilliant idea to fix any slight leaks, I PLASTI-DIPPED the solenoid! I used the spray-on kind instead of the actual dip. Got a nice thick coat all over the little jumper hoses and into all the cracks, nooks, and crannies.

I have driven about 400 miles since then and so far, the code has not come back. It is a cheap fix that is worth a try!

Are these pictures from the original post still available anywhere? They show up as missing images now (> 10 years after the original post). I just bought an '88 Fiero and I think my solenoid is bad.

thanks

For all intents and purposes... no.

There have been much more recent threads with EGR solenoid solutions.
