Hey Lads,

I picked up a couple of kits to replace a damaged rocker cover on my 86 SE

The aluminum and plastic rivets are a larger OD than my rivet gun will take and the aluminum rivets have threads on the them.

Just wondering if there was supposed to be a special tool used to put these on or if I just need a bigger part on the rivet gun?
Anyone with experience on these parts?

You need a larger rivet tool. Inexpensive at Habor Freight.

Thanx Guys,

I just need to install another rocker cover and the rear lower quarter panel.
Bought the kist from Fiero Store.

I will head off to Harbor Freight and see what they have there.

Cheers

Harbor Freight sells the tool along with an assortment of POM rivets and you can also buy the rivets separately. I don't recall the size, but they carry one size that is used for the rockets and the door rivets. I've used them and they work.

Has someone already tried this cheap eBay plastic riveter tool?
http://www.ebay.de/itm/3006...id=p3984.m1436.l2648

Which plastic rivet sizes do we need for our Fieros?

This set comes with following rivet sizes:
• 10x 5mm x 15.8mm
• 10x 5mm x 17.2mm
• 10x 6.6mm x 17.2mm
• 10x 6.3mm x 25.2mm

Harbor Freight also offers an appropriate riveter tool?
Can someone post the link, please?

Thanks,
Moar

Have you bought this one?
http://www.harborfreight.co...ly-rivets-97757.html

$16.99 is even cheaper the riveter on ebay!

Included rivets (same content as ebay tool):
• 10x 5mm x 15.8mm
• 10x 5mm x 17.2mm
• 10x 6.6mm x 17.2mm
• 10x 6.3mm x 25.2mm

Tesmith66, thanks for this great suggestion.

However, I´m in Austria and can´t get SAE bolts/screws in this size (only very big ones for Perkins tractors).
All other surrounding countries supply many different sizes of SAE nuts and bolts, but here in Austria
I can only buy some tractor SAE bolts and nuts.

Importing SAE rivet nuts and screws into Austria is quite expensive due to high shipping costs.

If this tool would also work with metric rivet nuts I would immediately order this tool!

BTW, do you know the hole diameter for the Fiero body panels?
Which outer diameter should the rivet nut have?
Maybe I can find a metrical thread insert riveter kit in China…

I suspect another option is to drill smaller holes next to the original holes and use a smaller rivet with washers to hold things in place.
That way you could use locally sourced items and make the repairs.
I have used S.S. hex head screw to hold things together in a pinch too,

Do not buy rivets from Harbor Freight. Especially in colder climates. They will snap. Buy the tool, but not the plastics. A good fastener store will have the correct rivets.

Thanks for this warning in the right moment!

I´ve already prepared my shopping cart at Harbor Freight for the checkout and it also included the 90pc POM plastic rivet assortment which I have deleted from the cart now.
So I´ll only buy the plastic riveter tool and some other stuff…

Am I the only Fiero owner here that says the hell with plastic rivets and uses these readily available inexpensive items pictured below to reattach my rocker panels?

I also have a regular rivet gun for aluminum rivets (for max. 4.8 mm (3/16")).

Acc. to Lou6t4gto I need big 6.35 mm (1/4") rivets for the rocker panels.
6.3 mm rivets are included in the Harbor Freight plastic riveter tool.

In the meantime a PFF member (Nelson) has sent me a PM and offered to
buy all the parts and tools I need from Harbor Freight the coming week!

So my problem is almost solved
