the rack at autozone also comes with the inner tie rods. a nice bonus. the Fiero Store rack has added on zircs to grease the rack but, overall - the only real wear item is the bushing, which can be replace, unless you actually wrecked the pinion/rack
Ummmmmmmmmm I am checking on that and you may be surprised. I'll let you know what I find out. I work at GM dealership. And yes you are correct you can not get one from GM.

I'm hoping the reman'd rack from Steering Wholesale above works out OK. (found good reviews) They supposedly remanufacture racks for the “industry” (I think they did the AC Delco racks, Ford Motorcraft etc.)
In any event they almost HAVE to be better than Cardone/Atsco.

i am debating rebuilding mine an 86 3.0 l l or getting a rebuilt one.... as mine needs a bushing in the pass side, but i dont know about the inner ties rods or anything else....
Its a little late, but... the best source for a good rack is at the doctor's.
probably find one on a parts car somewhere... those are getting hard to source, I'd rather go with a used OE that was made here, over a remanufactured one with china made parts.

Fierosound the source I was emailing is gmpartsonline.net. They were listing the non GT rack and the GT rack. The GT rack said discontinued, but not on the other. So I was asking about it and now I find they were to lazy to take them off their site. Both are discontinued. Pooooooooooh. You cant blame a fellow for trying. So I will pursue the sources you mentioned.
I am checking out the carsteering site you mentioned. I need a rack bad.

If you are serious, PM me what you want me to do, set it all up, and I'll do it for you.
THANK YOU.... (can't right now) I was speaking mostly from frustration - BUT I had been looking at moving to a PS rack.
I've thought once Unisteer has this information and could build a rack with correct mount location, width and pinion it would be the ideal solution for all the Fiero owners and Kit builders. (Unisteer's pricing is based on building 1 rack to fit 1 custom car) I think the price could come down if it becomes a stocked part that "fits any 84-87 Fiero" - once the "engineering" is done. I think quite a few would jump at a BRAND NEW drop-in power steering rack (but then... we KNOW Fiero owners are also cheap/poor).

That's almost $1000 (rack + core + shipping + GST + exchange) by the time it gets to me in Canada. I may as well go with the custom Unisteer power steering rack above for less.

I had a hard time finding anything on carsteering.com. Lots for Cardone and Atsco - mostly negative complaints about poor quality - Atsco worse than Cardone in some cases. The few comments I did find on Car Steering Wholesale were positive - like a service shop owner saying something like "we've installed quite a few - never had any problems."
I'll post what I find when the rack gets here.

I have a corvette power steering rack in my 88GT and I like it a lot. I used to have it working with all the electronics and the electro-hydraulic pump from a 92-94-ish Toyota MR2. I recently tore all that 90's technology out and replaced it with a 2003 ish Toyota MR2 Spyder electro-hydraulic pump. Wow, is it nicer! Much quieter. I used to be slightly embarrassed because at stop lights my car sounded like a runaway electric motor. Now I can't hear the pump over the engine; but, it is just as powerful as before. Anyway, I like it this way, but as soon as you mention power steering on this board it seems the nay-sayers come out of the woodwork just to insult and put you down.

How does the rack mount? Where do you put the electric unit?

Rickady88GT has a thread on it somewhere; I bought a mounting kit and rack extenders from him. One side of the rack uses the stock 1988 rack mount while the other side I had to cut off the stock mount and weld on a custom bracket. The rack has a shorter overall length, so rack extenders were made to lengthen it and change the threads to accept stock Fiero inner tie-rods. The electric unit can be mounted anywhere. I put mine under the passenger headlight. If I had to do it over again, I might mount it behind the radiator instead, it is not all that accessible to check the fluid as is, and pretty vulnerable to a minor accident.
In the old version, I had all of the MR2 electonics where the spare tire goes. The MR2 had four components in addition to the pump; I wired & plumbed them all in. The 88's have a VSS signal output in the front harness which is un-used (originally for the electro-hydraulic power steering system). I simply inserted a wire and pin into the harness and ran the wire to the computer along with a fused ignition wire, power from the battery (pump can draw a lot of current) and ground.
The new version is an all-in-one unit. The electonics are mounted on the side of the pump and the reservoir is mounted on the top of the pump. The old pump fit under the headlight with ease (custom bracket), the new one, being all-in-one is a bit larger, and was a tight squeeze, but much easier to wire & plumb. Plus, I get my front trunk back! I'm sure my wife will fill it with clothes for the 30th Anniversary show.

? ... OH... I wasn't talking about that, they are expensive, I was talking about breast augmentation...
... they'll have another rack once I send in my core for rebuild.
This is the problem. When some places charge as little as $50 for a core, plus you (the buyer) have to pay to send it back, people just throw the old core away. OF COURSE eventually there will be no stock left at all.
Someone has to drive over with a truckload of old Fiero racks and drop them off.
