Don't quote me. However by what I have read, heard, the earlier 84-86 were all the same sheet metal under the roof. I can't confirm this, When I went to get the engine for mine, the owner had a 86 fastback. The roof panel was stock. He had the headliner out and there was a cut out for the sunroof. I didn't see how the headliner would be attached. But he was eye balling mine. We both would have considered trading but he was packing every thing up for a move from Glen Bernie to Florida. Also by what I have read, the notchies are easier to do than the fast backs. The rear upper clip has to come off.
You are both correct. You can change a sunroof car to a non-subroof vehicle very easily. I believe the sunroof cutout in the steel roof panel is on all Fieros from the factory.
The metal is the same on all,, I like the solid roof better myself as well.. I want to find a replacement roof for the N* it has an aftermarket sunroof in it, I have considered ordering the fiberglass sunroof insert from Fiero fiberglass and just glassing it in... not sure how well that would work out..

Yep, been there done that. Converted my old '86SE solid roof to a sunroof. Took a good Saturday afternoon and only a little bit of cursing and Captain Morgan. I love the open air. That's why I went T-Top on my current one!

This isn't correct. The front roof section rides top of the rear. You've got to at least loosen the front to remove the rear, not vice versa.
To get the front roof section off you've got to pull the wipers and cowling, the top bolts for the front fenders, the windshield molding (it's easier to cut the top portion off, then pull the rest with the roof off to avoid breaking the glass), both drip rails, and the headliner.
Removed the glass top in the lightening process. Replaced with .062" 3003 Aluminum sheet . It can be cut with shears and installed with RTV. No more leaks. Just trace the glass. The sheet is available from an aircrafft supply house and is not expensive. I have left it aluminum, but it could be painted.
I did the reverse on my 86 but you are right--get the solid roof and solid headliner when you re attach the nuts/bolts on the new roof be sure to use some sealant (rtv for me)--that will prevent a nasty leak from appearing later--your old bolts probably have some left on them--the rear clip does not need to be bothered at all--you will have to get your side drip rails though---the black goo that holds the roof on at the front bow of the roof is the problem child---in the summer it was gooey and I had to work to get through it--now it is cooler out and the goo will be stiff--just ease up if you hear a cracking sound the goo (for lack of better word) will let go just apply even pressure from below (inside the car--good luck--pm me if any questions--done it twice... and that was before the internet and forum!!!
