I have a 84 Fiero with the high performance 4 speed transaxle. Have had it since it was new. Also had an 80 Citation with a manual transaxle. With today's higher highway speeds, I find the Fiero engine is turning 3500 rpm and higher. I liked the ratios in the 80 citation I had. Would it be an easy swap? I put a lot of miles on the 80 citation and changed clutch at least once my self, so I know what is involved in doing that.

I have two 85's with the 2.8. The SE revs much higher and doesn't like to drive at 35 because that speed is right between third and fourth. That's the M17. The GT has a different (four speed) transmission and is much more fun and practical to drive. I think it's the M6. The point being - wouldn't a different Fiero tranny be more practical? Isn't there a high mpg transmission for the Duke? That might be the best bet. I assume it cruises at a lower rpm and people say it allows you to get very good mileage.

There was only one 4 speed available in 1985.....the M17.

The Citation transmission will bolt up to a Fiero, but what gear ratios are inside is a mystery ( unless you can find the option sticker on the Citation). If you like how that transmission drove, it's probably worth the labor to put it in.

If you look at your 84 transmission, you will see two castings that were for mounting the cables into the front wheel drive vehicles. It was a remnant transmission from the Citation and Phoenix. Since the cables come in from the opposite direction on the Fiero, a new bolt-on cable mount was designed. Not having a transmission to look at, I don't know if the mounting provisions are on the 83 and older transmissions. If they are, the transmission should work for you.
