Need some help and opinions on clutches. 86 SE with V6 4 speed. Wanted to use the AC Delco part #381224, but apparently it's not availble anywhere anymore, and I have the usual Duralast and PowerTorque options. Anybody tried the stock replacement from the Fiero Store #54002? Was going to replace the fork and shaft from the FS, so this might be my best option.
Also, reason why changing clutch is that something is rattling around the bellhousing like something flew off the shaft or throwout bearing, sounds really really bad. I think I'm replacing everything in there, is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for the help.
BTW, just getting back into Fiero's after 15+ years and driving it home from purchase this all happens, and had to tow it home.....not a good way to start.....

I've heard of rocks getting there. Make sure that's not all it is before you start ripping things apart... unless the clutch isn't working properly and it's not a hydraulic issue.
When I replaced the clutch in my '88 Formula a year and a half ago, I bought a LUK clutch kit from RockAuto. It was a grand total of $70 at the time. I daily drive and autocross this car... I don't baby it. The clutch is holding up just fine.

I started using LUK clutches back in the 90's and have had no issues with any of them. Two 85GT's, an 86 GT 3.4, an 87 GT when it was a 2.8 and then 3.4 . Just my preference over house brands and cheaper than the Stage series clutches. Pep Boys and I think Advance Auto Parts.
I'm pretty sure its not rocks. Plus I cooked the clutch (can't forget that smell) just trying to get it on the trailer.
I did find the LUK clutch at Pep Boys for the four speed Muncie for $85 LuK Part # 04-077 before online discounts. Not looking for any big performance clutch, just stock everyday type clutch for a 90k mile Fiero. After searching around this site for LuK clutches, seems most people are satisfied with them for what they are worth.
With any clutch set you purchase, just make sure, especially with the 4-speeds that you get one for the 85 or 86 V6. The 84 4-speed set has a smaller friction surface and won't hold up to the V6. I've never found a LUK clutch set for under $100 is the reason I mention the smaller 84 set. They are fully interchangeable and can be confused.

You're obviously looking in all the wrong places.
The LUK Clutch Kit (04088) that I used for my 5-spd Formula is currently $77.79 at RockAuto, up from $70.79 a year or so ago.
I agree it's a little confusing finding the proper clutch for the Muncie 4-spd used with the V6 engines, as it appears to be the same part number as what is listed for the '84 4-banger. As you say, the clutches are interchangeable. Possibly LUK is supplying one kit to service all Muncie 4-spds. However, before assuming it's the smaller 4-banger clutch disc in the 04077 kit, perhaps it might be the larger clutch disc which is being supplied.

You're right about the sizes of the disks they are supplying might be the larger ones. I haven't had a problem with getting the wrong set because I've always stipulated 86 4-speed V6 for the Muncie, and 88 5-speed V6 for the Getrags. To assure that one is getting the larger disk set, I would recommend having the counter clerk compare specs to the later year V6 diameters since the clutch set should be the same, except for the throwout bearing.
I've also always bought my clutches from the local parts stores, generally Pep Boys. The first one I bought for my 85 GT back in the mid 90's was close to $150, I believe. The last one about 6 years ago for my 87 GT I think was somewhere around $110. Those were long before I knew about Rock Auto, Parts Geek or any of the other popular online stores. I didn't even know Advance carried LUK until recently while browsing their website, looking for flywheels.
Well, I 'thought' I could get the LuK from Pepboys, until at the end of ordering it said 'no longer avail'. So I did go back to Rock Auto and saw the 04-077 clutch in the 85 GT catagory with 4 speed, and a different model for the 4 cyl 85 Fiero #4005 (oddly enough, there wasn't a LuK option for the when you say you have an 86 SE with a V-6 with 4 speed, just the 5 speed is listed). I'm ordering the 04-077 today with some related parts from the Fiero Store (shaft/bushing/seals) and hope that's it. Thanks.
Advance Auto has them. I found them locally at $139.00. I guess the best thing to do is to compare the disk diameter of your old one with the new one to be sure you're getting the same.
I found that, too. i called my local store and they said they didn't have it in stock but could get one by this afternoon. They have a distribution warehouse about 20 miles from here.
I also went to Parts Geek and I was surprised that it was only $85. Stock 9 1/8 diameter. I don't know what the shipping would be, though or if there is a core charge. I purchased a drive axle from them and there was a $15 core charge refund, but it would cost more than $15 to ship it back. I don't know what this GM bulletin stuff is about. My warranty is for 12 months and only requires the flywheel be resurfaced.
LUK Clutch Kit Sale Price: $84.63 Quantity: (4) In Stock Part Number: 4648-07086038 Notes: Clutch Kit -- LuK RepSet supplied without warranty. Refer to GM bulletin #87-7-55, regarding replacement of flywheel, fork, pedal, slave and master

The 04077 LUK Clutch Kit at RockAuto is $80.79 with no core charge. Their shipping is usually quite reasonable within the US.

The LUK clutch I bought for my Formula for $70 from RockAuto 1 1/2 years ago would've been at least $180 (in US funds) locally. You can see why I buy my car parts online, even though it's a nuisance having to pick them up just across the border in the States. (Shipping across the border to Canada can be prohibitively expensive.)
