I'm spending the weekend working on the 383, and I'm messing with the remote oil filter at the moment and am curious about something. The way it was set up previously there was one hose coming from the remote adapter on the block, and the other actually came from a port on the block itself. Would this have been done due to clearance issues with the starter, or possibly some other reason? (I'm not at the point of installing the trans adapter or starter yet so can't tell...) Also, which port would it have been connected to? I can't recall, and the guy at the machine shop installed plugs on all the unused ports. Any ideas?

Thanks

Clearance issues with starter. There simply isn't any room for the center port to have an elbow fitting on it and clear the starter body:

For my first SBC swap, I used a different bypass plate. With a little clearance work, it cleared everything and allowed both oil passages to be larger and exit the side of the motor.

Also, while you are messing with the starter, get it properly positioned and then pin both the mounting block to the adapter and the starter to the mounting block. Aligning the started with the engine in the car is quite a pain, so a little forethought now helps out a bunch later.

This is how mine looks. Plugged the center hole in the adapter and used an elbow and braided hoses routed to the filter mounted on the cradle per V-8 Archie kit instructions. It's a tight fit with the AC hoses.

Yeah, I figured it out. I wasn't sure where the return from the filter should connect to the block as the machine shop had installed pugs in all of the ports. I finally figured out it needed to go to the port right above the factory filter location.
Thanks for the replies.

That's the style my 94 Burb has on the 350 in it, maybe you can pick up the different part of the remote housing at a dealer if they have a good parts person who is willing to do a little work. mine is because of 4 wheel drive or something else being in the way.

Are you sure the hose ports came out the side and not towards the front?

Here is a factory 4.3L 4x4 oil filter relocation setup adapted to work with a 4.3L swap I did about 8 years ago. It fits because this is a Zumalt style kit that uses a Nissan starter. Just comparing the pics, this one is too tall to clear the starter used with SBC swaps.

I would love to see a pic of your burbs setup. My 97 L31 4x4 has bypass lines and just shifts the filter placement a little to the side.

Its possible they go to the front, but isn't that just a matter of turning the lower part, its been a while since I have actually looked at it, will check it later today and see if I can get a pic. thing is with all the crap under that hood it may be hard to get a decent pic.
