hi guys,

i own a 88 fiero gt 2.8, with stock suspension. I recently purchased a set of GTZ rims and tires. The set came with 225/50/16. I installed the rims & tires on the rear first, to see how they would look. There's a gap between the wheel well and the tire, which i didn't like. I purchased a pair of 245/50/16 for the rear.

1st Question: will 245/50/16 fit on the gtz rims? i believe they are 16x7.

2nd: Will the 245/50 rear tires negatively effect the stock suspension or the transmission for that matter.

Any pros or cons i should be aware of.

Thanks guys

That's really too skinny a wheel for a 245 width tire- You want the wheel width to be approx 80-90%.....Your 245 mm wide tire = 9.6", so you want an 8" wide rim for it. You could possibly go as wide as 9", but the narrower(7") rim creates a lot of sidewall flex while not giving the tire a stable connection to the rim- Take it to the extreme- Your tire cross-section as a pyramid, with the top point as the rim- no stability at all- it just pivots...Now go to the other extreme, with your tire cross section flattened out to a straight line- no flex at all.....Obviously, tho people do extreme things with tires sometimes, there is a happy medium. I had 235/60-14s on 14 x 6.75 rims on my old Comet GT- I could literally push the car sideways approx 1-2 inches, while the sidewalls flexed...I found some Appliance wire mesh wheels(Beautiful rims!) that were 14 x 8- no movement, no matter how hard I pushed on the side of the car...and when I turned the steering wheel - instant reaction...Before, with the 6.75" wide rims, I could waggle the whole car back and forth- out of sync- by wiggling the steering wheel- make you kinda seasick....

For that size tire, you use a 7" to 8.5" wheel so you will be fine. That tire size is about 3/4" taller than the 225 series so it shouldn't affect your speedo too much.

Check the recommended specs for the tire. The 245/50/16 BFG G-force Sport Comp 2 specs the rim from 7-8.5 and tested the tire on a 7.5" rim.

I run these tires on the rear of my 88 with 16x7 wheels w/o issue.

That size tire can rub the spring perch on the 84-87 rear strut on some cars so coilovers might be needed, but it clears the stock 88 spring strut just fine.

I have this exact rim and tire package on my 87 I had to use a spacer of 5mm to move the tire and rim out from the spring perch of the shock. The ride on them is good but more for a cruiser than for performance cornering because of the tall sidewall. With these it is pretty tough to spin the tires on my 3800 series 3 stock on dry pavement.

I had the same rims/tires on my 88. 205/50/16 up front, 225/50/16 out back, no issues.
