I was driving my Fiero last night and when I nearly got home, the radiator fan stopped working all of a sudden. The PO somehow wired it to come on when I turn the ignition ON and it runs continually until I turn the car off. The fan won't turn on until I tap it but it only spins slowly and then it stops again.
You will have to check the power going to the fan (voltmeter). If that is good, then could be the motor is shot. Could apply 12v to the fan to see if it turns on.
Edited to add that if you order one, check the electrical connection at the motor. There are two styles. Round port and square port. Be sure it matches your harness.

Check the connector. Is it distorted on making poor contact? . If good. Replace the fan motor. Its an easy job and the cost for a good re-manufactured motor is under $30.

After you fix the fan motor, you should 'undo' whatever hack the previous owner did and fix/restore the fan control circuit to the factory design. There is absolutely no reason for the fan to run all the time.

It sounds as though the PO might have removed and/or jumped the connections across the fan relay. Is the fan relay there? Continuous fan running should not hurt anything but it may shorten its life.

I suggest that you get a tube of bulb grease and put a blob in every connector you have to make sure you have a good connection. Clean your contacts and then squirt the grease in the socket. This stuff keeps the socket and connector from oxidizing and makes sure you have a good contact always. I have been bitten so many times with an oxidized connector which will give low light or motor movement or intermittent action. so many times I thought it was a bad motor/bulb/sensor/etc.. I put a squirt on all contacts and connectors everywhere, and will from now on too...
Just some advice from someone that was plagued with weird intermittent issues caused by bad oxidized connectors...

If the connector is good, ill guess the brushes in the motor are just worn out...replace the motor
Theres no big deal other than using power by having the fan run all the time. Ive had some cars that came from the factory like that. Some, especially Chryslers, that even run for 5-10 minutes after you park the car. If you use air conditioning, the fan runs all the time anyway.
I had this problem on the way home from Carlise. I checked over the system and found that my motor burnt out, and I replaced it. It's been fine ever since.

yeah usually when banging on a motor helps it, its burning out. If its wired on all the time, that could be part of the reason it burnt out.

For sure, running more = burning out faster. It will still go for many years though. The fan ran all the time on one of my Mercedes SLs for 250,000 miles. Might still be running, I sold it in like 1995.
