Edit: This post is just to share something I found interesting that you may or may not have known already.

Yup... you read that right... If you were a car guy in the late nineties (i wasnt) you probably remember the Ford Taurus SHO. What I just found out about them yesterday is that they came with a

THREE POINT FOUR LITER DUAL OVERHEAD CAM ALL ALUMINUM SIXTY DEGREE VEE FRICKIN' EIGHT

Built partially by Yamaha, these things make 235hp@6100rpm, rev past 7k stock, and can be massaged to hit 9k with rpm to spare.

They weigh within a few pounds of a GM 3.4 TDC, both fully dressed.

A guy in texas hit 630hp at the crank with Fifteen Pounds of Boost. All stock internals, upgraded fuel delivery and ignition. Nothing else.

Not to mention they look absolutely sexy. It'd be more at home in a car that cost 7 figures, rather than 5.

By the way, there are a couple on ebay, one complete with140k, and another brand new unused short block+rotating assembly, $500 for either.

Ive never wanted an engine in my Fiero as badly. Probably never going to happen, but hey. I can dream.

They are indeed very nice engines, but like any DOHC V format engine they take up quite a bit of territory up top, which limits engine swap options.

Not sure if anyone has used them in a Fiero yet.

Had a look - they have!

Yeah, I remember the Yamaha V8 used in the Taurus SHO. Call me nit-picky, but I don't like the idea of a 60-degree V8. It's mathematically "wrong", just like a 90-degree V6.

Might as well go for the full-meal deal.

Redneck heaven...

I flew past this Taurus in my AMG Mercedes SL on the interstate once. I was totally surprised I couldnt get away from it. I finally slowed and let it pass. I saw the SHO badging and looked it up when I got home. Surprise.

Although a very small Engine displacement wise, it is very large overall. They also had problems with the cam/spocket interface...If you do get one, have the sprockets welded to the cam shafts.

A properly built LS4 can turn 7-8 grand with no problem, and is a lot less work.....I do understand the fascination with the SHO V8, tho.....

Our local Ford dealer brought one in and it sat on the lot for 3 years .No one around here knew it had a Yamaha v8 including me .No one understood the kind of car it was . It sold really cheap , I now wish I had bought it .

If I remember correctly, the sprockets are pressed onto the camshafts. That doesn't inspire much confidence in the valvetrain.

I believe that's the SHO 6 banger. It sure sounds like a six.
Kind of hard to see, but it looks different from the original post, too.

The camshafts were hollow tubes, and after positioning the sprocket on them, they forced a ball bearing thru the insde to expand it and grip the sprocket....Actually a brilliant idea- but in practice it did not work well.

Simple welding will lock the sprockets in position...if they fail the engine is an "interference engine" so the whole thing is toast at that point.
