Was the aluminum gear pressed on at the center near the camshaft or at the outer portion?
Pressing it on at any point other than the inner shoulder could weaken the gear and cause it to fail.

Heated the gear in the oven. Froze the cam.
Gear went right on. No press was used.

Cam runs oil pump and distributor before 87. Either/both w/ problems can break the OE gear and in bad cases break the aluminum too.
87 run the oil pump.
88 neither.

Cam retainer plate must have proper clearance or the plate will bind when hot. If installed tight then can bind when cold.
spec's are in my cave.

is cover been hitting the cam gear? Picture the hubs looks like has galling like they rub.
If does and cover wasn't crushed then cam retainer likely broke.
