Hey guys so my 87 GT 5 speed Fiero is grinding when i put it into 3rd and 4th pretty bad.. I can only put it in 4th if I hold the clutch in and wait about 10-15 seconds.. seems like an eternity while you're driving lol. 3rd gear grinds when i shift no matter what do.. 1-2 and 5th are fine.. i'm not really a mechanic... But i'm trying to figure this out without taking it to a REAL mechanic lol. Wondering if this has something to do with it? Lets see if this picture works.

The cable to the right that moves well is your Shift Cable for forward/backward motion of the shifter. Gates 1-2, 3-4, 5-R. The one that doesn't move very much, to the left, is the Selector Cable, operated by side to side motion of the shifter lever. It positions the levers on the transmission for one of the 3 gates.

2 4 R

Since your symptoms are on the same gate, it may be that the synchronizer for 3rd and 4th is beginning to fail, but don't assume that until the cables have been adjusted and the problem continues.

Make sure your tranny oil level is good, and adjust the cables.
