Just dropped this gas tank from a 1986 GT that I bought about 6 months ago. PO said that the old tank had rusted and he couldn't find a stock tank so had this one built by a guy in Florida (said it cost about $800). Was considering putting it into my other car, but when I looked at the top of the tank (sending unit area) found that it doesn't have the lock ring design used with stock gas tanks. I haven't taken it apart, but it appears that the sending unit it secured by five screws and that the opening in the tank may not be large enough for a stock sender/fuel pump. The car has an external fuel pump (noisy) and the supply side is attached to the lower port in the rear of the tank (has a plug in it while being removed). Does anyone have any experience with this tank and, if so, do you know if the tank can be adapted for a stock sender/pump?

Joesfiero used to make those. I believe he had 2 types. One was stock and the other was designed for the external fuel pump. See this thread.

Thanks IMSA. $300 for the tank, as stated in the thread, sounds more appropriate than the $800 stated by the PO. Too bad this one has the sender only style and not the style that accommodates the stock sender. I'm not keen on running a noisy external pump on my car so will probably just put this one back in the car it came out of.

Does anyone still make gas tanks? Its not easy to find decent un-rusty ones, and a larger capacity would be nice too....

An external fuel pump may be noisier, but it's sure of a heck lot easier to replace than the internal one in a Fiero.

My Subaru has a hatch in the floor giving access to the top of the gas tank... and subsequently to the internal fuel pump. IMO, the best arrangement.

If the noise from the fuel pump is too loud, it just means one thing......you need a louder exhaust

The car does not need a larger fuel tank or higher output fuel pump so swapping it out for a stock unit would work. This tank and pump runs the car fine. Problem is that I'm in the DFW, TX area. Shipping mine to you and vice versa would cost a lot. Then comes the issue of the difference in price between this tank and a stock tank. I think that the tank was installed about 4-5 years ago, but the car was put in storage so no exposure to the elements or use on the pump. PM me if you have any thoughts or an offer. I'm open to suggestions.

I just sold the last of 2 of these tanks I had made in Florida. The sender is a marine unit which is a better design than the 30+ year old designed in tank sender/pump type. The tank never sold for $300, unless you picked it up at the manufacturer. I sold the last tank with a Deatschwerks external pump for $500.
