Hey Everyone!

I am looking for a new shift knob for my 88 GT 5-speed. TBH, I wouldn't mind shortening my shifter by about 2 inches by threading it down the lever a little. But, for right now, I just want to replace the ugly Autozone multiple LED boy racer shift knob that it has. Are there any other shift knobs, like a normal leather one from another car that will fit? What is the thread size for the knob?

Thanks everyone!

Manual Shifter Knob Thread Size: 16mm by 1.5mm pitch

Andys Auto Sport has some:
https://www.andysautosport....s/pontiac_fiero.html

I saw a few OEM knobs on eBay....

Other OEM 16mm x 1.50 Shift Knobs:
1993-2002 Camaro / Firebird
2009 to 2014 Dodge Challenger
2004 to 2006 Pontiac GTO

As aftermarket; search on Amazon and eBay for M16x1.50 Threaded Knobs or with "adapters"

If you want to cut the threads off from the shaft, then you can use an aftermarket knob with set screws or thread the shaft.

The stock Fiero shift arm diameter is too large in diameter to permit the use of most aftermarket knobs without extensive modification. This direct replacement shift arm has no threads and uses a 1/2" shaft.

I just bought this one from NAPA for like $18.00...

https://www.andysautosport....ports__PM-2245E.html

Exact same one on Amazon for $15.97....

It was a half hair too small for the shift shaft so i tool a Dremel with a drum sander attachment and opened it a little.

Work great now.

Tip: After you sand it, wait till it cools before sticking your pinky into the shifter. Don't ask...just take my work for it.

I believe it was Russ Wormuth (RWUpholstery) who was, at one time, rethreading Mitsubishi 3000GT shift knobs to fit our shifters. They were very nice.

2" polished aluminum from Twisted Shifterz, they have a huge selection to pick from in 16mm x 1.5 thread size.

Not at the present time, however, offers 'Leather Manual Shifter Knob' BUT:

Yeah, I don’t want aluminum. Not a fan of how it looks, nor of the heat. Too Fast and Furious for me!

Thank you all for your posts though. I think I am going to shave my handle and go with aftermarket. The OE ones on eBay, even used are just ridiculously priced for the most part.

Prices on 'everything' have been skyrocketing and everybody is feeling the pain.......

I laughed at the price on this listing:

It's a bit warm for the first couple of shifts but it's really not an issue.

Visit a wrecking yard.
I think a knob from any GM manual like a Cavalier will fit.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this...
If you want a shorter shifter, find one from an 84.
I find it to be the perfect length, as long as you don't mind the increased effort. (I have "select" issues, so...)

I made my own out of aluminum round stock, using one of the lathes in the machine shop I work in and a sphere-turning fixture I built. Going to try and anodize it in my garage soon. Don't remember the thread exactly, but it seems like it was 12mm diameter x medium or fine pitch. A measuring caliper from hobo freight or similar will get you in the neighborhood. Or, I can take mine to work tomorrow and take some thread measurements for you...
(Edit) - As others here have mentioned, the thread is indeed M16x1.50.

I think that's cool that you made your own shift knob. I hope you enjoy the feel of changing gears with a round metal shift knob as much as I do.

Thanks, Larryinkc. For me, the deal-maker was that I wasn't finding anything commercially available that floated my boat. I had already turned a round aluminum knob for my VW Fox and love how it looks, feels and works. And the fact that I made it myself just made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I just reviewed this thread and saw where the OP stated he didn't really want aluminum. It's not for everybody, I suppose.
Phils88gt, keep us up to date as your search progresses. Good luck!

A round metal shift knob just feels right to me. Most of my DD cars have been manual floor shift cars. The first mod I make is a 2" polished aluminum shift knob. I wish I had the skills to make my own but I have to buy them. Lucky I found Twisted Shifterz, they have been able make whatever I need.
