that's weird. my 84 came stock with the big single connector... I wonder if it's a first few months of production thing since mine did also used to be a manual speaking of which if you want an 84 4 speed I have one I'm not gonna use
Hi Carter. When I got my car it had no engine in it, so I have no idea what was done to it over the years. I'm on engine #3 now and are we having fun yet?
The two port connector, to my knowledge, wasn't designed until much later.
It is the same connector that I have on my 88 Formula, but the Formula has a drivetrain from a 1993 Cadillac Eldorado (4.9 V8/4T60-E transmission).
I have seen other 1980's cars with the TH125 automatic, they all had the flat connector connector, but the clocking was slightly different.
I would not be surprised if 1) the transmission is from a different GM product with a different flat NSS 2) the parts manufacturer dropped production of the low demand Fiero connector and substituted the other part in its place
If I were you, I would modify the bracket on your new NSS to match the clocking of the transmission in your car, after you determine that reclocking would solve the problem.
I've had to do that on a project in the past and the effort was successful.

pff I'm on engine 4 already and I've put all of them in after taking out the factory one that hacked a rod. I'm honestly thinking the nss made today just needs a custom bracket or wires changed around at this point

I discovered today that the transmission in my car is a 4L60E.
I'm not sure that modifying the bracket is even an option because when I rotate the NSS, the housing it is hitting on the retainer arm for the shift cable and the backup lights still do not illuminate - that's how far off the setting is.

Throwing up my hands at this point.
thats.. a coincidence. do you actually want to see how it's supposed to mount? I have one sitting in my garage next to a 84 manual and a 87 getrag I also probably still have a nss on it as well

The 4L60E is a front engine/rear wheel drive transmission.
The transverse version is a 4T60E.
Does it have a throttle valve cable? Does it have a vacuum modulator? Where is the wiring harness plug for transmission control?
The 84 ECM will not control the 4T60E. It also requires different axles than the TH125.

Yeah, I must have been given some bad information when I searched the number on the outer casing of my transmission on the internet. The number I got off of the trans was 86433936A. I couldn't find the 5 digit/letter code. No way could it be the 4L60E.
The number you copied off of the case has nothing to do the type of model of the transmission. The only info of the kind you need would be on the aluminum tag which is usually gone, or illegible.
The transmission is likely a TH125, as any other automatic would require different axles and mounts.
I think your best bet would be to modify the bracket to allow the NSS to function properly.

It shouldn't be that difficult.
BTW, did you get my PM?
Hi Joe. I will take another look at it but how does one go about modifying the bottom bracket which is crimped to a housing that you can't rotate far enough to illuminate the reverse lights when the housing hits the retaining bracket for the shift cable?
I got your PM and replied. Thanks.
