HELP!
I have an 86 SE 2.8 manual 4 speed, I probably dropped THE VSS plastic gear in to the oil pan, desperately looking to buy one, nowhere to be found... I posted on line and all I meat are crooks... any ideas? any other GM cars that share same part?

Hi Itzikbns, this is like the hardest thing to find for Fieros. If you can't find one on eBay, then I recommend a few places:

EDIT: I'd also add that it's probably better to have literally any gear in there, rather than no gear. I'm making an assumption, but you can probably adjust the signal coming from the VSS with a resistor or something... or maybe even on the gauge cluster itself.

I have a programable speedometer, you think I can do with 29 tooths gear?

I don't know what your set-up is like. But I 100% think you can. There's multiple different gears that were available, and they would get switched out based on what the final drive in the transmission was... and even matched to the recommended tire configuration you had.

So honestly... in my opinion, if you can program your speedometer and even recalibrate it... it doesn't really matter what gear you're using, just so long as you can in fact get a signal from the VSS. So, you should be good if you can find a gear, any gear!

First step; if the gear fell into the transmission you must fish it out of there. With its steel shaft, it will cause transmission failure. If it fell elsewhere outside it should be somewhere on the floor. You might have to drain the oil, invest in a cheap fiber optic camera and buy a pickup tool.. GM tended to use the same parts in many applications. The gear to other GM VSS senders might fit. The Fiero VSS gear is hard to find. Mike Valentine most likely has one if not a trip to the junkyard might be in order.

If the gear you find isn't the correct one for your transmission/tire combination, you can use a GPS to compare speedometer to GPS speed and make a mental note of the difference at a given speed, whatever your common speed limit might be.
