My son recently acquired an 86 gt with a stock 2.8 and a 4T60 auto. It began to shift erratically and have a low growling sound. He changed the fluid and filter but that didn't solve the problem. We then noticed the TV cable was stripped at the splines and was allowing the cable to slide in and out of the retainer. He changed the cable and adjusted it which solved the problem for a brief time, but the growling sound has returned, and the transmission won't engage in gear sometime unless you kill the engine and quickly put it in gear. Is there anything else to try or is this transmission toast?

A long shot but automatic transmissions can make noise if they are very low on transmission fluid. Check the fluid level with the engine at operating temperature as per the manual..

He will try anything. The dipstick is a twisted and mangled turbo 125 piece We are not sure if the dipstick tube is correct or is has been changed out as well. So, we are not positive if it's at the proper level.

Just from memory that transmission empty takes something like 3 gallons of fluid in a Fiero . If the dipstick is shot thats should be a simple fix. Not saying that low fluid is the cause but I've seen low fills cause these transmissions to grind.

Check the TV cable. Having this cable routed close to the EGR tube will cause the inner sleeve to melt to the cable causing it not to move. Don’t ask me how I know this. When you get your new cable change the routing and wrap the cable with insulating material to protect it from the heat.
