Hey, you may want to put something on the PFF splash page, maybe just a link to this thread, or something. I know I for one never read the Announcments (I know, The Horror! :P)

The reason why you are not seeing your bar is because it will only show if you received more than 50 ratings - to prevent people from having fits when they received 3 ratings in total and one of them was negative. I can change this number (50) to anything I want, so if you have suggestions...
And there will be a way to view your own rating. Maybe I'll make it so that you always see your own rating, even if others don't and even if you haven't received 50 ratings yet.
Great idea Cliff. Maybe this will stop some of the bitching. Doubt it, but hey, anything is possible right? Right? LOL

Great Idea Cliff on the 'Invisible' rating system.... Hope it stop's the 'whiners'. "Ohh, I just got a negative rating a few minute's ago, WHO was it??" LMAO!!!
I think just a page(link) that we can go view our own rating would be good, until we reach say umm 100 rating's!!

I say 50 is enough. Good idea on it being hidden though. Are you gonna let us know about the number of negatives needed to be banned?
Cliff, not being able to see everyones rating is no big deal to me. Maybe it is a good idea anyway because it might sway peoples votes if they saw how others were rating members.
I do not know the difficulties in it, but I do think it would be nice to be able to find out your own rating even if it was under 50 total. If its not going to show up when you post, could it be retrieved from a link and entering your password? Something similar to going into the system to change a password, or get PM's. Maybe that would be way to much work on your end... just thought I'd throw the idea out there and see what everyone thinks. Keep up the good work!
yeah I like the idea to enter your password to see it. I like the system not being shown though because when you had 3 votes if one was bad you were screwed... but I would still like to knwo my rating.
I think 50 is too high a number. I think 20 or 25 should give a good average. Also being able to see your own rating would be good. At least you'll be able to see where you stand.
Hey cliff did you make it so we didn't have to post a new reply before we could see the ratings. I just gave Oreif a +, and it updated when I hit refresh to show his bar Just curious
Well, I think this is great -- overall it should be quite fair - and, for those who are familiar with eBay, it performs the same function - thanks, Cliff, for another great feature of a great forum!!
Just another opinion, love the rating idea and agree with everyone in that its the people in the red complaining. If we are to have a rating system, lets have it freely available. Archie touched on it. If we are in tech, I'd like to see what other people think of this persons opinion. Not that I don't want that opinion but it lets me know what it is and I don't have to search around for the info.
I liked the system the way you had it origionally. What does the rating system really show, nothing we don't already know. I know that Ogre has a valid opinion. I know that Schism, not so much.(just 2 examples)
The rating system is only putting a picture on the screen of what we already know.

I think the majority of people really opposed to the rating system are the people who logged on the computer 2 days ago and saw the red bar.
I don't expect that I am going to be 100% loved by this forum, why? because I'm not 100% loved everywhere else I go. Thats egocentric to think so. I speak the truth and sometimes people don't want to hear the truth. Just like artherd said, if I don't have a few negatives, it means I'm not pushing the envelope.
Please make it stop, everyone is getting so uptight over such an insignifgant item. I don't think Cliff would have it set to boot people after 5 neg. comments, do you?

Is there a way we can move it down to 20 or 25 to see someone else's/your own rating? 50 is kinda high. Besides, I'm just nosy like that Also, I'm curious to know what my rating is! =)
50's fine, give it a few days, won't take long guys...
That said...
Hey, VOTE FOR ME!!! ANY VOTE! I WANNA SEE ! YEAH!!! )

I think 50 is too much, too. 25 sounds good. You still work too darn much on this forum. Take a break. The whiners will still be here when you get back.
I like the idea Cliff no matter if I get booted off. At least I know somebody give a hit one way or another. Cliff, You never cease to amaze me but then some say I'm easily amused.
Here's my 2 cents worth. I think the rating system is an excellent idea. I am new to this forum but have spent a fair amount of time reading many of the threads. Quite a few have degenerated into flame wars which is too bad. Too many other forums are too loose and almost anything goes but this system should be self-regulating and would control that. It is refreshing to encounter a forum admin who is really concerned about the quality of his forum. Thanks to all of you for what I think is a great forum.
You've got a lot of the code in place, how hard would it be to vote on whether or not to close a thread? Lots of the flame wars would be locked long before you would even have to intervene.
Just a thought..
I have, of course, voted positive for Cliff. Although I may have to put a - on him. Don't want all this goodwill going to his head...

Sounds like an idea to me...however what will enourage people to rate others? It is easy to have incentive to rate people you hate to get rid of them but why even bother to give someone a positive rating if it isnt' shown?
Give it a few weeks, and everyone's bar will start showing. Initial hide is just so people don't freak out when it swings wildly the first ten votes :P)

Agreed, 110%. I'd imagine that the only ones who would want to hide their bars are most likely the ones that the system was designed to expose and get rid of in the first place.

Maybe some of the people concerned about the bad ratings is because they are uncertain what it will take to get banned, and whether they have any way either appeal it or get a second chance. Let me try and describe a scenario which may be on the minds of some of the concerned.
Say someone gets involved in a discussion that turns rather nasty, starts picking up the negative ratings and ends up with enough to get tossed off. Now this member is normally a positive member of the forum and certainly doesn't go around causing trouble.
This person probably shouldn't get banned from the forum, even though he managed to really annoy some people on a certain occasion. Are situations such as this going to be considered? Or might they be reviewable by Cliff? Or might thenumber of negatives be so high that this scenario would be virtually impossible?
A second question on the votes and how they work (please don't kill me Cliff! ) Do positives offset negatives in the system when its going to ban someone? If you need X number of negatives to be banned, and had that number but also had an equal number of positives, would the member still get banned or would he need to get even more negatives?
Just thought some people would feel a little more at easy if they could see that they aren't going to get banned because they had a discussion thread go bad or something.

It isn't the number of negatives that will get someone banned. It is the ratio of negatives vs positives. Suppose you've been a member on the forum for quite some time, and so far you've been pretty helpful and you've been raking 50 positives. Then you get in a flamewar and people start giving you negatives. This means that you'll need at least 50 negatives extra or 25 of those positives changed to negatives to make your overall rating neutral.
Right now, the system warns you when more than 80% of the ratings you have received are negatives (the red bar starts flashing). Time to clean up your act then. When more than 90% of your ratings are negatives, the system bans you. Remember that anybody can change their rating for you. So if they have previously rated you negative, cleaning up your act might persuade them to change their rating to positive.
So in short, you have complete control over your own rating. If 90% rather see you go - even if you have made a positive contribution to the forum previously - then it's bye-bye for you.
