I've been getting quite a bit of emails from people lately, that the forum loads slow for them.
There's nothing wrong with the server or the forum, and it's always pretty fast from here. Now I suspect one of two problems:
- Either a router between the States and the Netherlands has been acting up lately, or - The DNS of these people's ISP is very, very slow.
In both cases, there isn't much I can do since the problem lies somewhere else. But I can try to find out what exactly it is that goes wrong.
If the forum has been slow consistently for you lately, and you want to try to find out what is causing it, please contact your ISP's helpdesk (if they have any) and tell them your problem with this site. If they find anything, please email me. If you don't want to or for some reason can't contact your helpdesk, please send me an email so I can try to establish if this slowness is bound to a certain region. I might respond to some of you with a few extra questions, or maybe even invite you to help with a small test.
Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what is causing this. Again, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the server and over here, pages load almost instantly. If the forum is slow on occasion for you, there's no need to email me - that's normal internet behavior.
Thanks for clearing that up!! I experienced a bit of slowness lately in midday. I come back at night and things are cleared up. Then again, I had a job before and didn't check then.. Probably just some congestion around here.

I've noticed this, too, Cliff. Lately, it seems that during the day, it's slow, then when I log on at night, it's much quicker. Like Jncomutt said, perhaps it's daytime congestion on the Internet.
I would find it hard to believe that anything would be wrong on Cliff's end, since I'm running one of the slowest computers on pff-(266 with a 14.4 modem & 64Mb ram). It always seems fine to me. I read almost every post every day & probably post in a couple dozen/week, more on the weekend. ((fully agree with the ogre about the sigs)
It was pretty consistantly slow a couple of weeks ago, to me. Especially during the day. I occasionally still get a slow page, but nothing like it was. I usually just attributed it to our internal network. Was usually better in the evenings, at home. Have a hard time judging now, anyway, since I'm using a secure remote client to access my home PC from work. It's *always* a bit slow due to the uploads speeds over my DSL, but it *is* safe from prying eyes.

Just to let you know the forum has been extremely slow for me the last week. IE: it took a full minute for this reply page to load. I thought it was my cable modem at first until I realized that any other website I visited loaded just fine.

Had you beat until 2 months ago when I bought the new one-486 DX4100 28.8 modem and 16 mb of ram!

Blaaa, it's not to bad today but at times the forum times out on me.

The computer I'm using at the moment is likely the slowest.... or bloody near it. 200Pmmx pushed to 233, A bit more RAM... 33.6 modem. (Lines here won't run 56 or DSL. I'm not paying anything more to scumcast. At best I usually get 31.2.)
When I originally built it several years ago, it was a AMD K6 166 pushed to 180something. I got the 200 intel from a junked PC so it was a free bump.
With any luck I'll be replacing it soon... But really... It still runs just fine for most things. Mainly it just takes longer to open programs. Once the progam is running, including Office2K, it runs as well as the P3 500 I use at work or even the new P4 2gig Compaqs that everyone is fighting to get at work. I mean how fast can a person type? As long as the screen keeps up with the keyboard most people don't give a rats butt.
This precise issue is why the PC market has tanked so baddly of late. Most people don't need or want bleeding edge machines. The tech has far outstripped the needs of most people.
My next machine likely won't be bleeding edge... it will be whatever I can get for a few hundred dollars. I refuse to spend a fortune on these things.

I just experienced the same thing Reality did. I'm on a DSL with a 1.4G HP with 1G of ram. All other sites have been fine. I've been seeing this for a couple of days now.
