I have a question about powder coating a plastic item.
if in needs to be electrically connected so to speak, plastic doesn't conduct electricity, I thought so just how would that work?
Or do not understand the process?
I do know when we used powder coat at GM in the 80s they were electrically bonded and went through the ovens after the paint was put on. problem was some moron used silicone to seal the ovens and we know that is a NO NO when you are painting anything to be near any type of silicone at anytime during the paint process anyway. so all those cars that went through those ovens had to be repainted again after the ovens were stripped of all the silicone. remember all the pink 80s Buick Regal's for Mary k. they were all powder coated pink at our factory and had to be stripped and repainted again after the oven seal material was changed. now I don't know who decided to use silicone for a sealant in paint ovens but who ever it was cost GM millions.
But like I said if you want the oven its yours just come get it, the ride is really beautiful even on the highway but once you get off the highway you will see why we are still here, it really is beautiful country up here.
Steve
IDK if plastic can be powder coated. But then again I know squat about the process...
Seems were due for another carb cleaning as we have a wondering idle problem. It will rev really high even with the idle screw turned all the way in or out. I think theres some junk in the pilot jet. Man these carbs are VERY sensitive to dirt or debris.

I hate that little roaming Gnome you see on the TV adds, have even considered buying a few as well as a few of those Energizer Bunnies for target practice out back. that's how much I hate them.

So I should have crushed the Gnome instead? lol
Dreaded In-laws family event ALL day today. Meh, it was fun but Caleb and I just wanted to get home and tinker. So we finally get home, run out and pull the carb and set to cleaning it. Well we found a pile of gunk on the idle screw tip. Everything else looked pretty clean. Slapped it all together and she idles great again!!
Woo-who!?? Nope..In my infinite wisdom while talking with the neighbor we decided to try pulling one link out of the stretched chain. Well guess it isn't stretched enough cause now it was too short. So we spent the rest of the night pressing the pin we just pulled back in. Stupid, stupid short cut mistake. Well at any rate it was another opportunity for a great lesson. When you try to half-azz something it usually comes back to bight you in the ...

Pick yourself up a chain buster, you can add or remove a link in under 3 min.
same idea as one you would buy for bicycle chain but bigger and more heavy duty, just about any wheeler shop in or around town will have one you can buy.
And here I came for an update, only to see that! Lol
Well new pretty chains on! Rips again. Look at the top axle nut to the right of the chain. Mangled from the old chain falling off and grinding it up. I got really lucky and was able to just get a grip on it. I'm goint to have to replace that soon.
Pretty new bearings need to be installed. Not looking forward to that.
If you look through the center holes on the rear sprocket you can see where this bearing goes.
I wonder how do I get the rear axles out. Still have much to learn. It's coming along though and a TON of fun!
Fellow PFF'er Zkhennings stopped up for some parts and hit it up! Albeit a short ride into the pit and back. Sorry no pic's but it really did happen. I swear. He's a real great guy. Next time hopefully he will hit us up in the day time. Nice sunny weekend, with his Fiero!
Sorry Zach for the name drop. Pleasure to meet you!

Haha Oh it happened, the sand pits are really sweet I wish I had time to rip them up and explore where they go!
Calebs at a sleep over and Nanna's on her way to get the wee one for the weekend.
I just accepted a full time position, journeymen electrician. Back twisting wire nuts for the man. I guess the first project is at the mall!! Great pay with bennies et al.
Two stroke screamer. A bit smaller at 200cc but when that chamber fires its all acceleration. Most importantly it has a manually operated clutch. Unlike the Suzuki that has a auto clutch four stroker.
Been riding it and having a blast for two days straight. Caleb rides off and now it doesn't run anymore... Sigh.
Well it's got to be something telling the bike not to start or run. I heard it die on him. It just stopped putting out spark like it shut off. Now the reverse indicator lamp doesn't work. Before with bike off, key on switch it to reverse and the indicator light comes on. Now, no light. It's something to do with the neutral/reverse safety switch...
Ordered the Suzuki service manual and have been looking into it but it might be some time before we can ride again.
Dang. Well can't say we haven't had a blast so far anyway. Poor Caleb is bummed. Well figure it out Buddy it will just take some time.
I have the downloaded LT250 manual and it shows a way to test relays. Add + to upper pin A, add - to lower pin A, check resistance across upper pin B and lower pin B. Should be 0ohms or infinite. Does this sound right? LMK if you like. We are going to try it tomorrow.
We'll get Caleb, no worries.

An old digi cam we had. I found a bolt to fit the tripod mount hole, cut a tin plate, drilled a hold in it, added a few washers. Grabbed the duct tape. We did test fit it and at first we had it pointed to low. So we "refit" it. Test shots looked great. Right where we looked it aimed.
Well guess it's not so. Maybe your natural bodies reaction to crouch at speeds, head down looking out of the very tops of your eyes. Think about it. Imagine how your head would tilt. We didn't during this test run. There was another Caleb shot and it's even worse. Anyway have a peek. Turn your sound down at first. We didn't account for wind noise. http://www.youtube.com/watc...JyA&feature=youtu.be
Got it! Well kinda. I was checking for voltage at the neutral relay with a test light. I hooked the alligator clip to the head of the engine. Well key on, holding start button, test light touch the blue and black wire of the neutral relay it turned over.
We have power going into the relay via the orange wire. And we tested the relay by pulling it and the battery and it clicked but I'm not sure that means it's good 100%. We tested for resistance and that tested good.
Maybe theres a bad connection somewhere in the start switch or ignition switch. Maybe the ignition switch has gone bad.
Dang full time turning wire nuts for the man in the white hard hat is burning up all my wrenching and riding time. But hey maybe I get enough scratch together might get that second wheeler!
Yeah BikeBandits is the place for all things ATVs, Bikes, UTVs etc,. Great reference for parts and part #'s. Ours is a 92.
The things we found out after our Ghetto Pro1 testing was first, wind noise. Second is camera angle. Third is the camera doesn't really pick up on depth perception and grades or angles very well. Not very well at all actually. That back trail wooded section in the test vid is pretty much all deep speed woops. You know the sketcy ones that can have you nose picking the dirt in one fall swoop. Pitch right over the handle bars as you T bone the next woop.
I wonder if the GoPro has better depth perception.
Oh and BTW the quads running really good. Caleb and I get about an hour to hit it up every afternoon!
No the Go-Pro's don't get grade or angles very well either. Congrats on your new hobby with your son. If we get into activities with our kids they they will enjoy, they are a lot less likely to get into activities we don't want them to do. Did you replace the cogs when you replaced the chain. You need to do them as a set. doing one without the other wears out the new parts quickly.

TY and no, shamefully we did not replace the two sprockets. We at that cross road were on a limited parts budget. Both by design and fate. We weren't sure yet if investing in a bunch of parts would be a good idea. Now after some serious "testing" , we have deemed the quad worthy. And yes it's wearing the new chain out pretty quickly. No matter though as it was a cheapy. Next time we will get the O ring chain and sprocket set.
Oh and TY for the info on the Go Pro. Seems catching depth perception and grades/angles is a difficulty for just about any camera. Maybe two cameras side by side and overlay the images? Meh sounds too techy for me.
Factory service manual arrived today while I was slaving for the man.
So I been looking and looking for part #11 and it's associated hardware to no avail. Heck I can't even find rear axle housing parts on BikeBandit.
They call it a "chain adjuster". But of course any search brings up a slew of cam chain tensioners. Even some very nice looking aftermarket ones. Lol but no chain adjusters. Might have to hit up Suzuki for a set of these. We also need the axle housing to swing arm hardware and also can't find that. I also need to gather a few things for the bearing install.
Ah well it's a work in progress. And we both had a chance to ride today!
Lol go figure... Found it. Under final drive. Never thought to look there. Duh... #21, 22, 23 in the link. And might as well replace those chewed up nuts and bolts #13 and 15. http://www.bikebandit.com/1.../o/m139313#sch244320
Caleb just came in with goggle face, you know the mask of dust where the goggles don't cover. Awesome!
[This message has been edited by weloveour86se (edited 08-19-2013).]
So we been having a blast and trying to cut some new trails. There are 5 or so neighbors that all have quads or bikes just in our little compound. So everyday after work we hit it up for a quick run. Awesome fun! We are absolutely hooked!!
Neighbor kid stuck in the mud at the bottom of a nice crossing. He is definitely one of those riders that you might get blasting full bore around a blind corner head on. Caleb and I have had several talks about this. "Caleb, when Dude's out there riding I want you to be very careful. Stay away from him." So anyway we been out deep and it can get kinda hairy. We need a chainsaw for dead falls. One big blown down tree can ruin a perfect line quick.
We absolutely are in the market for another wheeler. If we had another quad Caleb and I could get down in there together. I'd love to put him at a nice water crossing and say "Hit it!". Watch him get muddy or stuck!
So I ordered a new drive chain tensioner to replace a stripped one of two. Guess what? Now the other is stripped. I ordered new axle housing to swing arm nuts. Guess what. Need the bolts as well.
If you look real close you will see that the genius previous owner put the rear wheels on backwards. The quad goes better in reverse in the deep mud then forward because of the cup of the rubber wheel tread pattern. So I went to switch them around. Guess what. Lug bolts and nuts are....Yup, stripped...One sheered right off.
I'm a Effing genius aren't I? Well we did get a chance to hit it up again. The good thing about the mud out back is when it dries it's like beach sand. Cept dang sand is all over our couch now and I think I may have destroyed a perfectly good pair of Etnie's shoes. Meh maybe they will dry out but blasting across water crossings is SOOoo much fun.
Franken-quad in the center. Hey it runs and goes. We stopped to scope the trail or lack of. It's like a 100 foot ravine down and back up the other side. Think I will go around. There USED to be a trail there. CMP ruined lots of trails.
Found this in the very center of nowhere. Guess like 30 years ago some dude walked out here and off'ed himself. Poor guy, guess it all just got to be too much. Sad really. There are names of family all over it. Guess the guy was very well liked. Sad.
We have got to get another quad. This just isn't going to work with one. When we hit it three deep it was a blast. Two is fun also. But one? Meh....Plus for safety reasons right?!
Caleb high sided it coming through a water/mud crossing and got bucked in some rain washouts. So he left it and came and got me at the house. Well while it sat there sideways on the hill in the mud the bead broke on the LR tire. We tried for a couple of hours to get it back to no avail. So we did the ole starter fluid trick. Works like a charm although I do not recommend it!
We GOTTA get another quad. Come on guys, chime in with reasons why. Help me build a case with the CEO.
Anyone know if a gas oven can be used? Also I want to start setting up the spare room downstairs. Maybe a home brewed mini spray booth? I can't wait to try our first PC test pieces!
edit to add. Ssshh don't tell Momma I just spent $120

So the gun has it's own fan built in the back of the unit. The clear portion of the gun is the "cup". This is where powder is stored during the process. Well there are two foam pieces inside the cup. IDK what they are for yet but they are basically the same material as disposable ear plugs. There is a metal charging tip on the end of the gun. Don't touch that sucker while the trigger is pulled, you will get lifted!
The wall wart has a plug that goes to the gun. Then it also has an alligator clip, the ground, that attaches to the part being coated. High heat tape, IDK how much of it and a few plugs. The plugs are for sticking in spots you don't want powder in. Say a bolt hole or such. Same with the tape.
Everything except powder and a oven. The manual says 1.5oz. of powder will cover approx. 7sq ft. of area. We have voted Signal Red is our first test color. I will probably order some tonight. Shipping time should give me some time to research the process more.
Then I just need to find a used toaster oven for now, start small. Most decent toaster ovens will reach over 400F* easily.
Finally a chance to get at those horrible rear bearings. Caleb getting some more wrench time with the giant adjustable! Thank god for the both of them!
It got dark so we called it a night. Good work Caleb. We got a lot of stuff off that we had doubts about due to stripped/seized bolts. I ordered about $70 of the hard to find hardware a few days ago. All that should be here soon. Things like the axle bolts and nuts, tensioners and lugs and lug nuts. That shiz adds up quick!
I can't find what bolt grade to look for at the parts store. I looked in the service manual I have here on paper. I looked at the online service manual. Can't find it. Would grade #7 do? Should I just go all out?
Edit to add... And oh yeah I need to devise a bearing installer tool. Threaded rod and two nuts with large washers? Or something along those lines? Or just use something semi solid and bang them in? I don't like the sound of that.

I guess I was brain fudging it. My neighbor collects old Dodge Power Wagons. He has all the big tools. Large table clamp then big socket and it's all back together. Still need the new hardware but we were able to ride again!
I took it all the way across the Eastern Trail and up to Route 1 in Scarborough. Neighbor kid on Franken-quad and I on ours. About an hour and half ride to get there on trails that haven't been ridden in years. We stopped at the gas station pounded a couple of Redbulls and headed back. 3 hours later we pulled into the backyard.
What a world of difference those new bearings make! I should have put them in weeks ago. Oh well they are in now and working great!
Spent most of today riding, breaking down, fixing and riding some more. The new quad is a 87? Polaris 250 trailblazer. Were not sure on the year yet. We been too busy riding to bother looking into that yet! A beast 4 wheel drive. This thing will go anywhere and is a two stroke screamer! It will fly past the Suzuki on the top end.
Caleb at a small water crossing!
Caleb up the other side looking back all beaming with pride!
So we got a few hours in. Maybe an hour of actual running time. Lots of stopping to chat and check the trails. Lots of stopping to catch our breaths. And lots of smiles from Caleb! Worth every single ounce of energy, time and money. Priceless!!
Geesh did I beat my rooster or what? Replace the word rooster with that other name they are referred to as. You know, _____ fighting..... So I been beating my _____. So to speak.
The Polaris wouldnt start. We been trying everything, cleaned the carb, fresh gas, pull, pull, pull, for two days and it wouldnt even turn over. Ether, clean the plug, still nothing. Checked for spark and its good and strong, getting gas, wth?...
So a neighbor walks over with another plug, we toss it in, effing thing starts right up! Sigh.. I have much to learn. Plug was fouled. Cursed two stroke. She runs like a champ again. Guess I will need to carry some spare plugs.
Now if we can get them both running for the weekend its on! Dont bother calling this weekend as we will be out of the office!
New battery in the Polaris and she turns over and starts nicely. No more killing your arm trying to pull start. Damn two stroke is a PITA to get started with a pull cord.
Battery cost $50 at Wally world but worth every penny when I think about how spaghetti my arms got from pulling.
The Polaris is a TANK with the 4x4 drive. The thing will pretty much climb almost anything. Lay up on the handle bars, give it some gas and up it goes. Ironically it also get air better. Like it doesn't twist mid air like the Suzuki does. If your not real careful on the Suzuki it will nose pick a jump quick. The Polaris noses up just a bit nicely and lands smoother.
$130 worth on nuts and bolts and bearings for the Suzuki...Sigh.
The old bearing.
That old left side bearing was a nightmare. You could feel the whole swing arm banging around when riding. It was completely toasted. All the rollers were out and floating around inside the swing arm tube. Getting the outer bearing races out was a PITA. Getting the new bearing, seals and all back together was a breeze.
Also got a carb rebuild kit that hopefully we can install tomorrow. Then after some, "testing", we have a bunch of hardware we need to replace.
Not a bad days work. Woulda took more pics but we were working fast for the light. Hopefully the carb rebuild kit will get this baby back up to speed. She's sputtering a bit.
edit.. typo

I honestly didn't do any part prep. Just dusted and wiped it down with a rag. I am VERY pleased with the results. The process just needs some tweaking. Super cool project with great results! Who needs something powder coated?
Maybe I should start a powder coat thread? See if I can pick up any pointers from someone with experience or anything. Meh IDK...
Oh snap. Sorry Steve I have been so busy with work and wrenching that I havent' been able to update this.
I am digging the new system. Seems a lot easier then sticking parts in the oven. Moving a powder coated non baked part is tricky to say the least.
We did get some ride time in today, thank god! We found a VERY cool spot today!! A very old bridge that is about 4 feet above ground level and about 75 feet long. Middle of nowhere. How cool is that?!
Caleb mashing it up on the Polaris. This is actually a pretty steep incline. He did great!
So it's all about carbs around here lately. We been cleaning them and tinkering with them to no end.
I can't for the life of me find a carb rebuild kit for the Polaris. Even with a google or a bing... It's a 87 trail boss 250. GD two stroke is a PITA. What between fouling plugs and getting the ratio right. But that two stroke power band is BA.
So we took an extra front hood we had and put it to use! Lets just say were "sanding" it.
We had ALOT of fun and nothing got broken. The Suzuki held up great considering it is over 20 years old. Even the Fiero hood held up great! Sorry for the blurry pic. Shutter speed...
Boo Yah!! Just picked up another Suzuki 230 Quadsport. This one is a sport edition. Different gear ratios, manual clutch, swing arm is different. Much, much faster. BTW it is the one on the right.
PO dealer serviced once a year since new. Everything is tight and this thing rides great!! I sold the Polaris for short money. I got so sick of fixing it every time we wanted to ride. I actually spent more time fixing then riding the dang thing. Plus I got the newest Suzuki for really short money and it came with four extra rear rim and tires and two extra front rim and tires. Those extra rims and tires could be most of the money I spent on the quad back!!
Now if only we could go for a ride. Caleb and I. But....It is Saturday in Maine in November and that means Bambi is on the run! We don't want any disgruntled hunters mad at us for ruining their shots out there with loaded rifles as we go zipping by now do we? Might have till wait till Sunday!
