If you do go for a ride, don't forget your orange, ride safe.
Steve
Copy that buddy! No riding past the first pit today!! Tomorrow? Another story! We are planning to ride all the way to Route 1. About a 3 hour round trip!!
YEAH boy! Caleb and I decided to hit it up for a night ride. ~~~~Awesome~~~~~
Tomorrow is the last day of hunting season here in Maine. Black powder muzzle loaders only I believe. Pretty sure but don't quote me. So IDK if riding tomorrow is a good idea. Plus we went because we could!
Caleb is really learning fast! I am starting to consider letting him try the manual clutch 230 sport. What better chance to learn to use a clutch? Better then my Fiero in 3 years when he hits 16!! But really he is getting the importance of downshifting and has gotten a feel for what gear to be in. Awesome job Caleb! Nothing better then high fives from my boy in the woods after dark chillin!
Building it now. We got some walls up and OSB on the outside, it is coming along nicely. Later throw some power in and all the amenities. Heck maybe even a front porch?
BRB with more pics. Lots of work to do still but ALOT of fun!
Man does it get dark around here quick this time of year. Tomorrow weather permitting cut the roof pitch and slap a few 2x4's across. Then some corrugated plastic sheeting. Maybe clear stuff would be good for light, do they have this stuff at Home Depot? Anyway we had fun today. TY to my son Caleb and the neighbor kid for helping.
Hmm then we need to figure out a window or two maybe.
So I need to take this toaster oven apart and remove that front middle element that you can just see in the pic.
When powder coating that thing makes it impossible to get the part in. Even the smallest parts. The oven has settings that allow you to turn this element off but it is just plain in the way. Cold or hot. I only PC'd one part so far just to see if it worked, and it did. But moving the part from booth to oven is gonna be a real PITA with that thing in the way.
So hopefully I can do this till the weekend than finish the pallet shack and get setup for PC in there.
Roof structure is up. Ran out of light fast today. Tomorrow a storm is supposed to dump 8 to 12 inches of snow on us so we had a big push to get the roof on today.
Tomorrow hopefully we can finish our walls and button her up. Then we can really start to seal it up with spray foam or caulking or what else ever we can find. Then slap a heat system in there and a couple of seats.
Then Caleb and I can, "Sow the oats of our labors".
Another GREAT day with my AWESOME son Caleb. He is learning to use power tools, tape measures and all that fun stuff!!

Steve, if I ever "go for a ride" again, here is how its gonna be....just not yet sure which one is mine... ...not like I have never been damn near dead on both...
4-wheelers......WIMPS !!!!

So since they are put away for the winter, now's a good time to send me the plastics for a custom paint job
Man IMSA, that is a brilliant idea! Maybe when the Eagle poops his big glorious income tax return turd on us we will have some extra cake and that will definitely be a possibility.
Used one of those portable tent thingy's canvas top and walla. Dryness from above!
Pallet shed gets some amenities.
I know which glass I want to use for a window but would it be practical. Also see my space heater? Two terra cotta pots and tea light candles. Works great!
Caleb and I banged around for a few hours today. He is getting pretty handy with the power tools and has gained lots more needed confidence in his abilities. Also we been talking a lot about working safely. Oh and we had a really great fire going for a little while in the fire pit. AWESOME!!
I think tonight after all the midgets are nestled snuggly in their beds, I will go out and give the Pallet Shack it's first official tests. I plan to test if the adjacent snow is cold enough to give me a "Code Blue" Coors light!
What better way to spend Xmas?! 14* F. today here. Probably a little warmer sitting on top of the motor though! You DO NOT want to get wet and better lift those feet high crossing the water! Great job kid!
Clamp seen here highlighted by the arrow. We had to dremel that sucker out. There is an easy out broken off and stuck in there. So we dremelled it all out and replaced it with a grade 5 bolt and nut. If you could see it better you can see where we had a major compression leak. This fix has made a HUGE difference in the motor. Lots more compression equals lots more...
So it's maintenance time and we need a feeler gauge. .03mm - .13mm. Or anything that will cover that range. The Suzuki factory manual I have says 09900-20803. But all my searches say local pickup. So off to Napa tomorrow.
We are going to try and set the valves and cam chain. Something I have honestly never attempted on ANY motor before. I know to find TDC on the compression stroke is about it.
Wish us luck please fellas. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Now I just gotta figure out which valve is intake and which is exhaust.
I have been following along. Congrats on finding a fun hobby and the plus of enjoying it with your son and family.

Lets say I believe you, . Explain how you figure you have a compression leak on a muffler clamp, .

TY Cliff for the congrats. There is nothing more rewarding then the smile on my sons face when we fix something or we stop for a break during riding. He (we) are learning a lot about tools, engines, each other and a lot more stuff. I'm trying my best to get the kid off the video games and into something he might enjoy as much. Do you have any idea how hard it is to compete with Halo on Xbox360? Never mind the vast myriad of other great games.
And TY for the question. I think you have brought something to attention. My error. It is not compression but back pressure. Or something that sounds made up but isn't, "exhaust pulse velocity". Honestly I did not make that up. Another made up sounding phrase, "scavenge the combustion chamber".
For the purpose of discussion lets look at this graph. Also lets use larger diameter exhaust like it is a leaky exhaust at this clamp. The two would give the same, less restriction effect on the exhaust pressure.
Previous to this repair we had to run the bike on full choke till up to medium rpms, then we could switch to half choke during medium rpms. After repairing this clamp we no longer need to choke the carb at all. Before the bike would not run at all without choke. After no choke needed at all. This is why re jetting the carb is often recommended when installing an aftermarket exhaust system.
To summarize TY Cliff for bringing my discrepancy to light. You are correct in that it is not compression. It is instead, back pressure. TY Cliff for giving us another great opportunity to learn something. Honestly I mean it. Caleb and I will discuss this very topic during our next wrenching session.
Now my son and I are off to learn something else! How to shovel snow around two Fieros and a Subaru. We are supposed to be getting dumped on and I still haven't dug out the Fieros from the last snow fall!
Have a great, great weekend everyone!! Andrew
Edit to add; I threw you a + for the great question CliffW. IDK if you care about it or not but hey WTH I figure.
[This message has been edited by weloveour86se (edited 12-28-2013).]
We did it!! She sounds AWESOME now. No more tick, tick, ticking!
Both the intake and exhaust valves are about middle spec so no adjustments were needed there. Good because just getting the feeler gauge in there was a major PITA. Now we know why it's called a feeler gauge. Because we had to do it all by feel.
The cam chain was a different story. Loosen the lock nut then back out the set screw and we heard an audible click sound. Like a spring in a ball pen. we could hear it pop out. Retightened the set screw and lock nut. Slapped it all back together. Pushed the quad out of the shed, so we don't inhale CO2. Started right up and purred. not one tick, click or anything. It sounds even better then when we first got it!!
Awesome work Caleb, TY for helping!!
So we also fixed a few other things. The neighbor kid rolled the quad going down a steep hill a couple of months ago. About half way down the hill he decided he wanted to turn left. Well we can surmise what a four wheeler will do in this situation. Roll over. And that is what it did. Effing kid is at the bottom, pinned under the wheeler trying to right it and he yells, "Don't come down, you wont make it." So I rode straight down the hill and pulled up right next to him laughing. Laughing till I spotted the broken brake lever.
This kid has destroyed his own wheeler and now he "likes" to ride ours. And believe me he rides it like it's a rental. We have to cut him off. No more free rides. No more breaking our stuff that we have worked for. It might be different if the neighbor kid had a job and money to pay for repairs but he does not. At the age of 22 he lives in a camper behind his mom's BF's house.
So broken brake lever, broken choke cable, messed up shift lever bushings/bearings, front sprocket has sheered of teeth and some other stuff I can't remember right now. If we added up all the broken parts we would be over $100 in parts. Doesn't sound like a lot but these quad parts are typically pretty cheap.
Never mind paying for gas... No more free rides little guy! Until we cut him off he will continue to believe he is entitled. Until we cut him off he will not be motivated to improve his situation. I am going to snap a couple of pics of whats left of his wheeler so we can see the destruction. One of those, lets take this apart even though we don't have the replacement parts, guys.... Sigh.
Anyway awesome work yesterday with awesome results. We learned a thing or two and did some much needed PM. Always more to do though!

Oh sure, pick on me, . I would rather you baffle me with bullzhit than with scientific graphs, . Yeah, I know about back pressure and the importance to the correct diameter pipes. How to figure the optimum diameter is beyond my pay grade. So many variables ... carb, intake manifold, head and cylinder size, valve size. You have to get enough air/exhaust out so you can get enough in. Too small of an exit will not allow air/fuel mixture in. Too big of an exhaust will not produce enough back pressure ... 'cept I would think a closed exhaust valve and combustion chamber size would be back pressure enough. Then we have the racer practice of racing with open headers. You will have a deep subject to discuss with your son but at least he gets an early start.

Lol. So I will baffle you w/ BS.
Waay back when I was 19yrs old, active duty, and married into wealth I had a GSXR 750. Well I took the GSXR to my local bike shop and had them install a Yoshi pipe with Ontario headers. Well the bike had to be re jetted. So I had it re jetted by the shop. I had sprockets swapped, a steering dampener installed and the tail light shaved. Among other things I can't remember now. Well I basically had the shop do all the work. I even brought the bike in one time and told the mechanic I have $2000 to spend. Set this bike up right. Thank god I sold that bike. I actually hit 158mph in Palm Springs once. Dumped it on Mullhulland (sp?) Canyon dr.in LA another time. Narrowly escaped a pile up on the 5 south between Camp Pendelton (sp?) and San Diego with my life. Probably would have been road kill if I kept it any longer.
So in short I knew about this re jetting. HOWEVER. I am much like you Cliff I think, in that this re jetting is beyond my scope of knowledge. I am looking into a DG pipe for my quad and this Re jet has me a little intimidated. I no longer am married into monetary wealth (good riddance BTW) so I really wanna do ALL the work ourselves. We have much to learn and have learned much!
And oh yeah. TYVM for giving us this great opportunity to discuss all of this! If anyone has any knowledge, objections, curses, admonitions etc. please feel free to chime in. Anyone know about re jetting? Please feel free to post up. We would love to discuss this or anything else you might have in mind.
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. Can't wait to see all the great stuff coming for 2014! We are planning for a spring camping/quad ride!
Scored these LED's at Wally World. 60 LED's at 10ft long with 24 hours of illumination on 3 AA batteries.
We are going to install them on Caleb's quad. His bike has lights and they work but we think this will be VERY cool for night rides! Plus were dorks I guess. Maybe do the old playing card in the spokes with a clothespin trick to? Make the bike sound mean!
I can't wait to see him riding at night with these LED's!

Caleb and I were banging hammers in the Pallet Shack this afternoon. Banging hammers is top secret code talk for effing the dog. Effing the dog is double top secret code talk for doing nothing at all.
So anyway there we were banging hammers in the Pallet Shack, when the neighbor kid showed up with his home made rocket. Awesome! Hehe, YES we want to watch you launch it! But duck and cover Caleb!
No chute deployed and we lost it in low clouds but it went true and straight. I think Caleb and I might have to go look for it tomorrow. With the quads.
BTW we have some puppies for sale.
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!
See you next year

Caleb and I were discussing some of the things we need for our ATV camping trip planned for later this year. We were looking at a set of Motorola Talkabout walkie talkies I have. We were discussing weather we should try and fix them up or find someone that could fix them or just find another set. Caleb and I both agree that a set of walkies will be very useful on a trip like this.
Well a breaking development came about. It was like nirvana, Narnia, an awaking of the light...Caleb said, "Dad, would you like me to chip in for the trip with some of the Xmas money you gave me? You know, help pay for gas or food?"
Eureka. Come here lil' guy and give your old man a hug! I'm so proud of you Caleb. Caleb is a great kid through and through!
Now Caleb, could we discuss the internet bill and water and heat and food and... Kidding.
Lots more to come when the dang cam's batteries feel up to the task (recharge).
Edit to add gratuitous pics of my great son Caleb.
For God's sake son, get a haircut!
[This message has been edited by weloveour86se (edited 01-04-2014).]
20*F outside today. Not really the coldest ever but colder then we would like for wrenching.
40*F in the Pallet Shack after only maybe 45 minutes of heating.
Never mind this Caleb. Grab that toaster oven and lets go inside to my work space in the basement. Right near the furnace. And lets modify that toaster oven. Used my sawzall and cut the front middle element right out of there. Just DO NOT touch the settings!!
Shot a part in our makeshift booth.
And this came out. Caleb says we should sell it to help fund our ATV camping trip BTW. Coil heat shield powder coated signal red.
And the Motorola Walkabout's. One works great, other I think mic is malfunctioning. Anyone think they can fix it? I would gladly pay shipping and maybe buy Cliff or you a few beers?
Woo who! Oil change on Caleb's ATV went off without a single hitch. Dreaded PO had overfilled the oil. There is a sight window with full and low marks. Well dreaded PO had the oil line above the window. Black and tan, for lack of a better description, colored oil. No telling how long it's been in there. I know the purist might say we should have changed the oil along time ago, ideal world yes I agree. Real world we got to it when we could. So now 1500 ml of oil later we are dead center in the middle with a nice smooth, honey colored oil.
Preventive maintenance...
So I PM'ed Steve. 84Fiero123 and he has extended a warm invitation to ride and or camp near him. AWESOME. Local people that I talk to about a ATV camping trip have mentioned Steve's area as a great location. Steve sent a link to one trail we looked at. Pretty cool. 14 miles long of great trails.
So maybe we could trailer the ATV's in. Ride the trails for a couple of days and camp at Steve's? Then find a ride back to the truck and trailer. Drive back and pick the ATV's up and trailer to another trail and another camp site. Take a week (or more ) riding around Maine. Trailering and riding ATV's and camping.
Which brings us to the legal stuff. Registration. Rider safety course for Caleb if needed. Local ATV club memberships. Permits. Landowner permission. Etc. Red tape but should be well worth it.

Sorry, I ramble. Redbull.
you are more than Welcome to stay here at the house or as I said in the last PM I sent you I have a great little spot right beside Hardy brook that runs right through our property, high and dry of the brook but so close you can hear it babble, I meditate there frequently myself.
the trail you are talking about boarders our property and our place starts at the gate at the bottom of in the first screen shot I will post and ends up past the scenic over look on the top of the screen.
now this second photo is a closer shot of just how close our place is to the gate at the beginning of the trail right off Red Schoolhouse.
We have an 8' x 8' Snow mobile trailer we use to get hay rolls and a pickup if both you're 4x4s won't fit on it that I would be happy to trailer you back to your starting point with if you decide to end your trip here.
Hell I will even have whatever ice cold beverage of your choice in my coke machine in my shop for your visit, no coins needed, just push the selection button and there you go, as long as they come in 12 OZ cans. Happy to be of help, and glad to meet a fellow Fiero freak and son, anytime.
You have my number, use it whenever you want to talk more about this.
AWESOME Steve! Whistle Stop Trail looks like a great first leg ride.
We could park our truck and trailer at the trailhead in Jay, Maine. Ride north up the trail for a day. Squat at your spot for a night of R and R. Then hitch a ride back to the truck. Heck we could probably even leave our ATV's and gear at your place and grab them on the way back by as we head north for the next trail.
TYVM For the warm invite. We really appreciate it!! We will definitely be getting ahold of you soon. Now we need to think about the next trail or two.
Lots of planning and wrenching to do till then! Come on spring 2014!!
Ya right now the trail is filled with those things right now. I will keep an eye on the trail signs, the put one on the gates come mud season to keep all motorized traffic out until, whenever, every year. just depends on how bad the mud is on the trail. they give a projected opening date on a sign they post on the gates to keep the cars and trucks out. to many people drive their trucks down the trail and destroy it that's why they put the gates up.
Steve

Were working on it! Honestly. The snowmobile has been sitting though, IIRC 4 or 5 years. My luck, as soon as I get it running all the snow will be gone. We shall see how/if this pans out.

Perfect point Steve about mud season. Many trails don't open for ATV's till June. June 15th for most ITS trails. Just found this out. Today. Details. Good thing were making a plan now huh?
So we, Caleb and I spoke today and were moving it back. We could still go in May but the big ITS loops and trails will be closed. So hopefully late June is not a problem for you all there. Always carry in, carry out. Ride safe and with respect etc.
For anyone that doesn't know, ITS is Interstate Trail System. From New Hampshire to Canada and all over Maine. We would like to pick up a run or two further North. There are some legendary loops and runs that were starting to look at. Chance of a lifetime stuff!
Well I just got off the phone with the owner (a very close friend of mine) and it's a 2000 Skidoo 600. IDK which model though. It won't be ours but will be here and we are gonna fix it up. So you better be damn sure were gonna be riding it! Owner said, "It should start right up. If not we are going to have to dig it out and push it onto the trailer."
Pfft! If we can ride it, I will dig it out of ice and snow with my bare hands!! We plan on grabbing it this weekend. He stashed it at his cousins house when he went through a big "D" a few years ago. I have seen it several times and he has the key (which I have also seen) in his truck. I just don't ever remember seeing the model type. It's not something I probably would remember though. Meh I don't care if it's a POS as long as we can run it!
Keep your fingers crossed for us pls! And hopefully this weekend I will have some pics of a nice sled we can play with.

Not a problem for me, I ain't going anywhere. good luck with the sled and if you think that getting the sled out will make the snow go away, GO FOR IT! I am already tired of the snow and ice, especially the ice. Everything is covered with at least an inch of ice under the snow, including my driveway.
Look what we just went and picked up! 2000 Ski Doo Grand Touring 600. Heated seats and grips, reverse, liquid cooled 583cc Rotax engine.
This is one serious machine. Not a toy for the inexperienced rider. Speedo shows 130mph! Think about that speed on snow. Scary. So we are going to have a better look at it tomorrow. I wanted to pick it up in day light but life happens. Better late then never.
Needless to say, I am STOKED! I've got perma grin!
Pic from the other day. "Can we go for a ride on it Daddy, pleasseee?". Patients kiddo, patients.
So I cleaned the air box out. Swapped in a known good battery. Added 2 gallons of fresh gas. And this sled is a SCREAMER! 600cc of hammer down on snow and ice. I only took it for a short spin because we have a high idle issue. But man does this machine jump up and boogie. It smoked like a bastard on start up. I mean there was ALOT of white smoke. I guess they all do it at first start up every year.
Scary fast. Way faster then the ATV's! Definitely NOT for Caleb to be bombing down the trails around here on. We need a giant open field or frozen lake. It is a Grand Touring model and is a 2-up so we could probably ride out together and find a nice spot for him to try it out.
I will grab some pics and or videos as time permits.
In other related news it has been over 40*F here for 5 days straight. Rain, fog, melting snow, etc. So now most of our snow is GONE. Told you it would work. I knew it. Happens every time. Just like the time I bought a snow board....
Well our buddy Shaul posted a BA pic I think you all should see. Pretty cool image I think and I just wanted to share it! Shaul is in Israel with his family till the summer. Great guy! I guess his daughter just finished her training for enlistment. I think he took this image at her graduation. Now that is one BA machine!
Sorry to go all OT you. I just had to share that BA pic! Updates soon as mother nature cooperates!
Back to business. Check out the belt that was on there! Clunk, clunk, clunk as you rode. Bad!
So I swapped it out with the spare. Pretty easy to do. Pull and pry and done.
The machine was idling at around 3000rpm. Much to high. It was starting hard and dying out. Died on me half way down the trail. This is no machine you can push home. So we got it started back up and mashed back to the Pallet Shack. Well I quickly shut it off, let it sit for a second and restarted it. The was a loud back fire out of the exhaust, ball of fire and something shot out across the ice!! No B.S. Well guess what?! It starts up and idles great now!

Its snowing like crazy out. Were supposed to get between 4-6in of fresh cover! Should be enough to go for a good ride!
Sounds like carbon build up, something common of those 2 cycle engines and part of a tune up if I remember right, cleaning the carbon build up around the valve reeds. Nice sled, now don't get hurt on the dam thing, hitting the snow at speed can hurt just as dam much as pavement.
That's the same belt and setup Amanda's golf cart has, I have to get a new belt for that this spring myself.

Well I think what ever was in there was causing issues as now she runs mint! The machine is a beast and can go many places that an ATV couldn't. What a blast to ride. I had it up over 60mph a few times. There isn't really a long enough stretch close by. Later when were more confident in the machine we might try a run or two down this old logging type road! This sled is a crotch rocket cruiser on snow!
AWESOME! TYVM, to our good friend Van for letting us ride it!
Edit to add another cool pic!
Edit again to give Pallet Shack much deserved props! A true thing of beauty!
