Yet one more time the indestructible mail box has lived up to its name.
The town plow truck driver did however swing the dam thing around the post and bend the dog over as well as put another dent in the side, but as always he has survived and dented the towns plow.
It looks like it may be an interesting winter as we have a new plow driver on our street.

Must have been snowing pretty hard not to see that thing! Maybe it needs a bunch of reflectors
No, new driver who drives way faster than he should be. I have to go put the driveshaft on the Burb after changing the u joint and will check the driveway cam and see if it Shows just how fast he was going, because he must have been flying to swing that sucker all the way around the post. I had to have Melanie help me swing it back over, I think I weighed it one time and it was like 80 lbs.

Does this meet postal regs?
Asked one of our mailmen once and he said it was fine but to be honest I never had it checked by the post master. We have many people who do something like this, some just put their mailbox inside a big hunk of pipe just to protect it from our notorious town plow truck drivers. I used to go through 3 or 4 mailboxes a winter and it didn't matter if they were plastic or steel.

Why? Their drivers are the ones who hit it, so they are technically at fault.

as if that mattered to the town's lawyer. i can see the headlines now. "curmudgeon faces prosecution for endangering municipal employees" "dangerous farm animals... survivalist... vicious guard dogs... weapons of plow destruction... repeat offender..."

To what, making a mailbox that would stand up to being repeatedly hit by the towns plow trucks? that yea, see we listen to the scanner during snow storms and the DPW is one of the channels. We hear the plow drivers scoring how many mailboxes they hit on the street they are plowing. So much points for knocking them off the posts, so much for this and that. See its a game up here for them.
My property is on a curve and those sons of bxxxxxxs use to have fun with my mailbox. I got fed up and planted a 4x8x72 concrete lintel reinforced with rebar in the ground for a post. They challenged it ONLY once and learned their lesson. That move has held them at bay for many years now.

Steve, I said large guard DOG, ok buddy??---maybee time for new batteries in the hearing aid man ?? DOGS are for guarding, and HOGS are for bacooo....bac....bac....

Around here, people who get mailboxes hit repeatedly , build brick or stone surrounds for them. I seen one guy who used rebar reenforced concrete around his. Id say it could prob survive a direct hit by a 10 ton truck. A car hit it and barely made a crack and totalled the car.

And it is probably illegal. I know if I hit one of those, I would be suing the owner. I know a person who hit a mailbox poll in the winter (icy roads) and the car was flipped over. The pole was a power line pole, cut down to size and stuck deep into the ground. The pole didn't break off and it became a ramp and flipped the car. Easy lawsuit. The owner of that mailbox replaced the pole the day after the accident, with a standard breakaway pole.

If you’re mounting a curbside mailbox on a post near the street, the support should be secure and safe. The best supports are designed to bend or fall away if a car hits them. The Federal Highway Administration recommends… •A wooden mailbox support no bigger than 4” x 4" •A 2”-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe Bury your post no more than 24” deep, so it can give way in an accident. Don’t use potentially dangerous supports, such as... •Heavy metal pipes •Concrete posts •Farm equipment, such as milk cans filled with concrete In areas with lots of snow, we suggest a semi-arch or extended arm-type support. That way, snowplows will be able to sweep under without knocking it down.
All it would take is one accident and a good lawyer and you will lose no question.
Looks like they meet the requirements of the USPS.
BTW, I am not telling you to change anything, but just be aware that you would be responsible in the court. It may not happen, but then again, all it takes is one person...

Already had one old man take it down, he ended up having his brother come and remount my post as it snapped off at the base, like it was made to. ether way it is private property and he damaged it so he is responsible for the damage to it.
Just like if he hit my plow truck parked in my yard.

Apparently one doesnt have to follow the laws. There are subdivisions all over town here where ALL the mailboxes are encased in brick or stone structures next to the streets by the developers. Im sure they had to get building permits approved by someone.

Building permits? Easy fix for that, just takes money. I am guessing that most people don't even think about the mailbox regs.
So what is the difference between hitting a Deep mounted indestructible mailbox as opposed to hitting the end of a guardrail? It happens should the end of government property be durable where as my mailbox breaks and I have to spend money to replace it?
It does break away by swinging. Except for other heavy trucks, it looks like the only threat to the mailbox is the plow. Record the conversations where the drivers are scoring hits and use that as defense in court.

Not only does the box itself brake away by swinging, the post its mounted on is just bolted to the concrete that its mounted to with bolts.
We had a juvenile here doing community service and guess what it was for? bashing mailboxes with a baseball bat, so I told him to bring his friends by and they could swing at mine all they wanted, hell I would even buy the bat. I am thinking of making it look more like a regular box though not that it will be any more vulnerable. it will be made out of the same thickness steel.

Actually they make sure you pay for any damage to those as well as telephone or light poles you hit. I had a girlfriend take down a telephone pole many decades ago and she was charged for replacement of the pole as well as what it cost them for the guys to replace it many decades ago. usually we never know about that because our insurance companies just pay that.

Opened my mouth too early, it seems. Not half an hour after I posted that, it stated snowing, and kept snowing all night. Only 2 or 3 inches though. Quite enough to disrupt people's commute around here, sad as that is.
Where I use to live there was a guy who's mail box kept getting run over by a 4x4. They must have had some conflict over something. After six times replacing his box he put it on a piece of railroad rail and boxed it with wood to make it look normal. Few days later the mail box was damaged and the post leaning a little but there was motor oil all over the place. Bet the guy did not make it to far before his engine failed. The guys mail box stayed up after that...

the Feds take a dim view Intentionally damaging a mailbox . I would have just taken pictures and let him go to jail, instead of escalating a situation. If the guy was already pissed, you trash his truck, he might come back to torch your house. Would be hard from prison. At the least it would be used in court if he did.
I have a crappy lame 1980s mailbox in front of my house... but I'm thinking I really want something unique... like maybe an engine block with a front that opens up to put the mail in...
