I'm eligible for a discount on a new Sprint phone next month (I'll stick with them as their coverage has been good). I don't HAVE to get a new phone but I'd like to upgrade my S2. I do a lot with it and it's getting a little slow. It's also not set up for 4G LTE/Sparx. I'm looking to spend as little money as possible, too. The LG G2 is faster (quad core v dual core), better camera, bigger screen (with higher resolution), blah, blah, blah.

Does anybody have the G2? Comments? Complaints? Pros/cons?

I haven't had any problems with Android. Since the only other options are Apple (tiny screen and expensive) and Win8 (where do I start?), I'll stick with Android.

I tried out a smartphone for kicks since it was free. I dont know how you read anything on it. I have nearly perfect vision. Almost all the web pages I tried it on got a pop up that page wont fit, use another device. Ones I could read, the links you touch were so small it took a dozen tries to get it in the right spot. It was an LG phone. Typing anything other than a phone number was a royal pita on the touch screen. The WiFi connection at home didnt work more than 10' away from the router, and even setting right next to it, it dropped off several times. The web pages I could get on it, I had to move it around side to side, then down to read a line. On a side note as a phone, the ringer was set to highest setting and I could barely hear anything in a quiet room with it in my pocket. All just confirmed that these smart phones are just dumb junk. I figured out why everyone carries them in their hand...so they know when it rings. You all can have them.

Na, I like my Casio Boulder GZ. I can leave it in the car in the garage, dial it in the house and still hear it ring. I misplace it all the time, leaving it in car, in coat/pants pockets, or dropping behind couch cushions.. and its that easy to find.

The G5 isn't out (at least not with Sprint) and I'll bet it's uber expensive. I'm not trying to go deep in debt for a new phone, just a little upgrade.

I have the G2. I only have one problem with the phone, occasionally when I try and open the camera it freezes the phone and I have to restart it. It doesn't happen very often and will start working again later on. I bought the phone the day it came out so I don't know if it's just because mine was a early build or not.

Thanks. I take a lot of pics so that's something for me to consider.

I don't have a G2, but I upgraded my S2 to an S3. Love that. What a difference.

(also have an older BB....great for work and propping up tables. My iPhone was garbage compared to Android.)

If you are happy with sprints coverage and would like to save a couple bucks check out Republic wireless. They have the moto x for $300 ( no contract) and 4g lte service on the sprint network for $40 a month (unlimited talk and text with 5Gigs of data) the data being a soft limit. They also have the moto g coming soon for $150 They also have some other interesting plans depending on your situation.
Ive been a customer for a few months and Im diging it so far

I've had a Verizon G2 for a couple months. Apparently there's a difference but the only complaint I have is you have to insert the cord one way. My wife has an Iphone and they can be plugged in either way. Decent sound, good camera, easy to work with.

I'm a fan of the Galaxy line but (at least according to specs) there are a few places where the G2 walks all over the S4. Both have the QC Snapdragon quad core proc but the S4 is 1.9Ghz where the G2 is 2.26Ghz (I've had more than a few desktop computers that weren't that good). Of course, both beat the crap out of my S2 (1.2Ghz dual core). Both have 2gb RAM (which, again, is double what my S2 has). The G2 is heavier but smaller than the S4. Both have a 5" (approx) screen (with the G2 edging out the S4 by .2"....not sure I'd notice) but the G2 uses an IPS screen where the S4 uses Super AMOLED (which is what the S2 uses...I like it). One area where the S4 beats the G2 is memory. The G2 has 32gb of built in memory. The S4 only has 16gb of internal ROM BUT has a microSD slot (up to 64gb card). Both have a 13mp camera but, from what I've read, the G2 cam is one of the best smartphone cams out there. Both will cost about the same (basically free for the G2 and about $50 for the S4).

I didn't bother trying to compare the new S5 because of 2 things. First, Sprint doesn't offer it (no idea when or if they will) and second, being a new, top of the food chain phone, I'd be willing to bet it will be uber expensive. I'm not willing (or able) to spend hundreds of dollars for a new phone, no matter how much better it is. A couple years from now (when I might be ready for yet another phone), the S5 will be old news and the prices should be down to the the current S4 levels (meaning next to nothing). I don't need the latest and greatest. I have no need to "keep up with the Joneses" (even if I knew who the Joneses were).

Every carrier seems to slightly change their version of each model of phone (no idea why as that just jacks the price up for consumers and carriers alike). There are at least 3 different versions of my S2, probably more.) If you're talking about the microUSB cord, there's always only been one way to plug that in. Wouldn't be a complaint for me. Good to know the sound, camera, etc are good.

At the end of the day, to me there are 4 important things:

1 - Screen ( 5+ inch and bright )
2 - SD slot ( gotta have one )
3 - Battery ( replaceable )
4 - Rootable + Cyanogen..

The rest, is academic to me now as they are all 'good enough' under the hood.

But since i'm only buying outright from here on out and no more contracts, i doubt i can get a Note 3, and will have to settle for a Chinese clone. ( no S-pen for me.. )

Ok technically below 500.. heh. Its still more than i am willing to pay for them however. 250 is the limit of what a phone is worth to me.

I wasn't arguing it being under $500. That is where I buy my phones when CL is inflated.

Me and my pardner are really enjoying them. He upgraded from the S4. I was coming from the Note 2.

Not a fan of how the stock internet browser works compared to my Note 2. Hopefully I can get it to operate more like that.

I tried Chrome again. I remember why I don't use it. Samsung's app allows you to copy pictures to the clipboard so you can put them inline with your text.

Price is out for the Sprint version of the S5. $200 (with a 2 year contract, of course). Not sure I want to spend $200 for a phone but seems like a decent deal. (Of course, there's the payment plan for those that don't have $200 cash. $27/mo for 23 months. $620!!!)

I can get the S4 for $50 (and they'll let me pay cash). That place (I'm assuming it's in China) wants almost $200 for it. The more I think about it, the more I think that's the way to go. While I'd like the S5, I don't NEED the S5. I'm close to actually needing the capabilities of the S4 (or equivalent).

Joking aside, they are legit. So is the other places i deal with. You have to do research on the items as there are translation issues. and you might get burnt. Not so much outright lies like in the old days, they do try now as they want the continued business. And you cant return items ( well you can, but you pay shipping back so you might as well keep it ). But overall if you dont mind 'not quite name brand stuff' its the way to go.

I always ship via DHL now, get my stuff within a week.

Is it the right answer for everyone? No, but for a lot of people, its an option. Especially when $ is an issue.

( i'm real close to springing for their Note 3 clone.. i just worry about the pen which is why i want a note. I am still researching but i *think* its just a regular capactive stylus, but i saw one review where they said the button works on it... )

Anything close to $500 for a phone to me is dumb...it is a phone first. I can buy running cars for $500. I always get free phones every couple of years, just dont take them. Ive got at least one brand new phone that I only had turned on one day untill I got a replacement for my lost Casio. Its a Samsung Convoy 2. Its got internet, texting and most stuff I never turned on. I think the last phone I paid for was a Sony in like 1980 . I still have it too.

I've still got 5 and 10 year old phones. Most of them aren't worth much to turn back in (even my S2 is only worth $17 credit @ Sprint and it's still considered "high end") and it's too much of a PITA to sell them on eBay. I tried a few times on CL but got tired of the scammers. At some point, I'll probably give them to one of the programs that gives them to battered women (the 911 capabilities are always "on" even if there's no service).

Nothing wrong with my current S2 so I'll probably try to sell that on eBay once I get something else. I've found some pretty good deals on both S4s and LG G2s so one of them is probably going to be my next phone. I've seen both for free or a penny. (Walmart has the S4 for $50 with a $50 Walmart credit card if I can find a store with it in stock.)

Your choice. Told you to do homework first, not afterward. I cant help it if you didn't follow directions. ( clearly you didn't if you were disappointed in what you got . Should have known up front )

( and why do i suspect you really didn't? You were pretty vocal about it back then being against the entire concept )

If you stay on contract with most of these companies NOT taking the 'free' phone is stupid. You are paying the same price if you get a new phone or not, so might as well get the phone. You are just giving away money. I know that is slowly changing with some of these plans that separate the phone cost from the plan, but a lot still dont and you pay the subsidy regardless with those plans.

I agree for the most part. Unless the new phone requires you to pay more (like going from a basic phone to a smartphone where you HAVE to add a data package), take the new, free phone. Almost every time, it's a better phone. Even if it's "only" the same quality phone as before, it's not worn out. On the other hand, it's not my phone so do what you want.

Not if none of the new free phones are any better that what you have already. I only pay $35 @ month and im ok with that for a phone that actually does what its supposed to do. For what I want in a phone, no one has invented one that works any better than my Boulder in the last 8 or so years Ive had it. Just being the latest and newest dont make it better. New tvs are the best, except they have a problem making one last 5 years while I still have working CRT tvs that are going on 30 years old that work just fine. New cars are better, but a parking lot fender bender can cost $1000, and in an older car with real bumpers, it bounced off without a scratch. Dont tell me about how new stuff is better. If I have anything that has worked fine for years, I have absolutely no reason to 'upgrade' until I break it.

'supposed to' is relative. As is better. not that i'm one to upgrade an item just for fun ( as in, "ooh new stuff must get".. i dont do that, in the least ) i can tell you that in many cases holding out just for the reason ' that it still works' is silly.

TV for example, i held out for a LCD tv until just recently, my old tube was 'good enough'. BS it was pathetic. i just thought it was better. Will it last longer? who knows... but its far more useful than my old tube. Uses less power, takes up FAR less space even tho its bigger. Even scaled down the cabinet it is on and reclaimed floor space. Now that you cant get analog transmissions from your cable provider, even holding out for the reason that i prefer analog was stupid too.

Phones? When i ditched my old Samsung impression and got a iPhone, yes, it was a FAR superior product. Forgetting any features i didn't use it a was more clear display, more room to store stuff ( music ) *far* more battery life.. Did the old one 'still work', sure, but the upgrade was a huge difference. ( it also let me combine my PDA and phone functions into one defice.. but i agree that isn't an issue for people these days )

HVAC.. mine worked.. but a new one saves a TON in the monthly power bill... I could go on and on.

Is this true for everything new? No, of course not, but the point is that if you resist solely for the reason 'it still works' you are not being rational.

I wasn't blaming you. They weren't for me. They were just cheap phones to try out a new service with. I'm out on helping friends get new phones for cheap as a result, so really it was a blessing if anything.

Ah ok. I thought you were with how it was worded, sorry i went off the deep end a bit then.

Yes, they are cheap, but that is the whole point, offering an "option" for those that need it. I do spend the time to do research on unrelated forums ( never their own.. ) so i know actually what level of cheap i'm getting ... I didn't do that once, and got burnt. I also set spending limits on what i'm wiling to lose, if it goes south in a bad way since realistically there is no realistic way back once its on the boat. ( or plane, in my case )

Decided on an S4. 50 bucks from Radio Shack. Running Android 4.3 (which I'm sure will be updated to 4.4 sooner or later as that's what the Sprint S4s come with). Not much of a learning curve but I can't get any of my apps/data to load from my old mSD card (from my previous S2). That SUX as I have some info I NEED. Pics in my gallery show up and it shows I'm using about 5gb so the info/apps are there, somewhere. Music didn't carry over, either, now that I think about it. Odd.

Big azz phone. Looks nice, great screen, thinner than the S2 and it feels lighter. Still fits in my front pocket well. Collects fingerprints like a homeless person collects spare change. Quite a few new features (like a new sleep mode if you get the sleep mode cover thingy...4 bucks, on order). I don't know if all the new features are part of the phone or part of the OS.

Anyone want to buy a well taken care of S2 (Sprint)? I'll probably put it on eBay along with the dock/stand this weekend.
