Something us privileged complain about to make our lives seem like the struggle that it used to be for humans back in the day? We don't sleep because we don't really do sh!t? We don't tax ourselves like we used to just to make it through another day?
I hate to say it (because I don't want to do it everyday), but some of the best sleep I ever had was after a FULL day of overly-strenuous mental & physical activity combined. I hope that's not the secret...
That is the secret. The best sleep I get is after a full day of mental and physical work. I've also found that having a bed that's right for your body type is good as well.
Try not to eat after 6:00 PM. Try not to eat stuff that is relatively high in protein or sugar such as a nice, big steak or a sweet & sugary desert . Lastly, limit caffeine and alcohol to a minimum. Kit
Simply listen to my sweet voice serenading you, and you will fall peacefully to sleep.
Activity (Physical and mental) help you to drift off, or simply take 5-10 ML of Melatonin 15-20 minutes before you go to bed. Valarian root works too.
And take some Magnesium to make your dreams ROCKIN'! (the first one or two times you take it )
I take melatonin on a semi-regular basis, and I can atest to the weird dreams if I go too long between taking it. I'm not even sure I'd use "weird" to describe them. I've never taken any psychadelic drugs, but I imagine that's what it's like.
Schedule is paramount for me. You set an alarm to wake up, set one to go to bed. Go TO BED and GET OUT of bed at the same time for a week or two. Forget about falling asleep, just get to bed at the same time every day. Works for me. Also crown royal, just not the maple kind.

Not really helping or answering here, but just thought I would piggy-back off of your bitching...
My mattress is almost 20 years old now... and I'm SUPER-cheap... so I've really waited until the absolute last second. You can literally now see two indentations in the bed, on her side, and my side. It wasn't like that 6 months ago before we moved... but it's totally obvious now.
On top of that, there is a peacock that lives in our back yard that screams bloody murder from 2:30AM through the rest of the day until 8:00 at night. So... that certainly doesn't help either.
I used to sleep like a rock every night, but what I did was I'd run / exercise every night, then shower, and then go to bed...

Valerian root puts me to sleep, but if I awake at 3am it won't put me back to sleep. Melatonin is worthless. In fact, I think the idea that your body makes melatonin so you can sleep isn't true. Physical work does it everytime.
Dont eat within 2 hours of going to bed. Be careful what you do eat or drink. No TV or radio on in the bedroom. Proper temperature. Comfy bed. Quiet. Eyes closed. (You need to bore your brain to get it to start daydreaming which leads to night dreaming IMO) (dont work out your problems or the next days schedule, think about pleasant things only)
To go back to sleep if awakened: Keep eyes closed Keep slow breaths or your heartrate will rise Keep thinking about what you were dreaming about Dont let yourself get distracted
As said too, schedule, regular sleep cycles and your body gets used to it.
For me, if I have aches and pains one or two tylenol will help alot. Apparently I have some aches and pains faint enough I dont know thats what makes me toss and turn, but some tylenol and I dont.
I have an adjustable air bed, its worth it.

Nah man, Melatonin works. Not even up for debate.
Especially with kids. Though I don't recommend using it often on them, or for long periods of time, it works almost 100% of the time. with kids.
95% of the time, one "goodnight gummy" or sip of "juice", they are OUT within 30 minutes. The nights the parent used a vitamin gummy (tastes exactly the same) or non-melatonin 'enhanced' juice, it took 2-3 hours to get them down. They did it three times a week, on those days, ZZZzzZZZ. other days, they wanted to call in Samual L. Jackson to read that book to them.
But most kids will go to bed after a full day's exercize and stuff.
and I feel bad for mentioning it to a few of the parents, because they use it too frequently w/ their kid(s)
But it's not the plecebo effect. Take 10-15 ML of melatonin, and after a half hour, you feel like you took a few shots...
Building (and finishing) a five minute model helps you to sleep. you KNOW you will succeed at it when you start it, when you finish, you feel a nice sense of accomplishment, your brain rewards you w/ some dopamine, and then you snooze.
Okay, I won't debate it, but I'll tell you that it doesn't work for everyone.
For many years I had trouble getting to sleep. Melatonin was useless. I've been having less trouble lately, not sure why. But if I do have a problem getting to sleep on occasion, I notice that slow, relatively deep inhalations help... as opposed to short shallow breaths (panting). Focus on the breathing (and forget about what needs to be done tomorrow). It's sort of like the type of breathing used while getting into a meditative state. Makes sense I suppose.
I continue to wake up a hundred times a night (after sleeping for perhaps two hours) but at least I can usually get back to sleep (before waking up again... repeat... repeat).

Yeah, I don't have problems falling asleep. It's the depth & length.
I suspect I do 20 or 30 shallow micro-sleeps a night...
Drugs, lots of drugs ! Smoke some really got weed just before bed

he's just looking for a girlfriend, get him a girlfriend and I can guaranty he will shut up. or is it a girl, I can tell you by what he looks like and his call, if he has the beautiful tail feathers, he is definitely a he, if not he is a she, then she needs a boyfriend. Oh and if he is a she, send him this way, Jimmy lost his mate and has been driving us nuts calling for a new mate. I'll even pay for shipping if it is a girl !

1. Don't slow down. 2. Stay out of the house and up late burning energy. 3. Get up early-beat the sun up if you can. . 4. Never "sleep in" just because ya can. 5. DON'T over eat. It takes lots of energy to digest food, and lots to process excess food (waste). I eat one meal/day most every day, and it's in the evening. 6. Avoid drugs as much as possible. 7. Eat lots of red meat.
A good night's sleep to me is about 4 hrs--6 if I am really really beaten down. Spent lots of years getting by with just 2-3 hrs sleep. BUT, nowadays, I do HAVE to have at least a couple hrs out of 24 as downtime.
It used to be S3X , but at 69 years 11 months, that's no longer an option.
Go to bed at the same time, grab a body pillow to throw an arm and leg over, get hold of the hand of the mate of your persuasion, tell them you love them and goodnight. I don't hear loud vehicles, severe thunderstorms, the granddaughter when she spends the night, or anything else unless someone purposely wakes me.
The body pillow can relieve back pain and ease breathing problems due to weight, and telling the mate you love them takes away their temptation to pound you with a hammer while you sleep.
For me, the quality and quantity of sleep seems to be directly related to activity level. So if I didn't do diddly-squat all day, I may have trouble getting to sleep. And when I finally do get to sleep, it will be later than usual. So far, I haven't found a very effective way to get around that, other than an exercise session.
Of course, your mileage may vary. My suggestion would be to try some different methods, and see what works for you.
One melatonin tab at bedtime and I sleep like a ba,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I have a sound machine app that I downloaded for my android. We originally got it so that Devin would learn to sleep through the night and not wake up with the slightest noise. Then I noticed that I could turn it on and he would fall asleep. We had "trained" him to go to sleep when we played a certain noise.
So I started using it. I've used it in noisy truck stops, motels, sleeping in cars in rest areas, and all kinds of other places. All I have to do is turn it on, and I drift off to sleep.
OMG! Yeah it might work for the person who took it... But for their partner? The hallucinations my wife had left me disturbed and made it difficult to sleep because I was worried about her!

You asked what worked for "me".--I answered.
IMO its nuts. But I have a 38 year old friend who does this all of it, but not eat alot of meat. He even only needs about 5 hours a night. He puts docks in and out and builds them for a living, plows snow in winter, and fixes and sells project cars as a hobby. But he also doesnt even drink caffeine, and mostly eats vegetables but eats nearly anything, lately hes been avoiding processed sugar.
One thing I wonder, if you had a sit down physically boring job, would the requirements change?
