Yeah, I've been involved with that sorta stuff in the past. But on a muuuuch smaller scale. Gathering the pieces of old defunct(yet useful) websites and services ...There were a few times I almost sorta "lost myself". But reviving old systems, getting them to function decently enough to coax the old data to float to the surface... reminds me a little of making soap...
Only once was I paid for my work, it was slightly profitable, but the other times. It was entirely out of love/obsession not to let the experiences die.
I have a few TB of old "interesting" data that I hope to revive.
Sometimes, it's interesting, like a paleontologist scratching away the dirt, revealing ancient tooth or scale, but others, it's like a soldier picking through the pieces of what until recently were his comrades...the grenade took them all out.
