Anyone know of a decent short muffler that makes the bike quieter, and not louder like they usually do? I am trying to bring the noise down a notch on my Yamaha (hopefully without ruining the pitch too much). All I can find are either massive or make it louder. Any suggestions/experience?

Bike's an 82 Yamaha 550 bobber. Ideally the exhaust won't go back very far, shorter the better. I can cut it back to where the 2 into 1 is, about 4 inches from where they end in the photo

I can't help, but a friend from school makes bobbers for a living and I'll ask him.

Can I see more pictures of that bike?

I could take more pics, but it's on pretty rough shape right now. Needs some attention to get it to a more rideable (and legal) condition. I'd leave it straight pipe like it is right now, but my neighbors would eventually bring the popo to my door

If that is as short as you want the muffler to be I think its going to be almost impossible to quiet the engine down enough to keep the neighbors happy. Mufflers need room to quiet noise and that room means space/distance for the baffles unless you pack the muffler pipe with steel wool and that restricts flow.

Don't know what kind of budget you are on, but Super Trapp might be the ticket for what you are looking for. Friend of mine had them on a BMW, nice sound, and they are tunable for performance and sound via the multi plate design construction. Here is an example of what they produce, and they have many applications:

I would think virtually any muffler you stick on that straight pipe would be an improvement. If you live long enough, you might even save the aggravation and expense of hearing aids.

Here's a baffle one I found that might be the best I can do:

Only 12" long, should fit pretty well in there.

I have looked into supertrapps in the past, and I do like that second pic you posted. Would work out well, but it's a bit over budget for this build. This bike might not get ridden very long, it's hopefully gonna last a couple years til I can get my cafe build done

More photos

If you ever get to Albuquerque he's got a nice little place,

and what is supposed to be a fairly busy cafe as well.

not sure your diameter. One thing I read in the past is using old muffler tips from air cool Volkswagen. There small round tail pipes that have resonators in them. Supposedly you can slip them on some motorcycle pipes. There like 6 inches in length and really cheap may be worth a shot.
