Between Aug. 12 and 15, my new bride and I were traveling from Massachusetts to Atlanta. There wasn't a hotel room to be had anywhere along the I-95 corridor. We slept in the car by the side of the road on the nights of the 12th, 13th and 14th. I heard later that some of my Army buddies had attended and eventually were arrested and deemed AWOL. Some lost their security clearances due to drug arrests.
There were some great live tracks that came out of that concert.
I was 14 and couldn't find a ride and wasn't thumbing that far.
Half a million people and you know what? most of the rednecks in TN thought it was just like 20k people that showed up. I tried to con a guy into flying me to the 25th I think it was so I could sky dive in because I couldn't get tickets. Again I
Steve

Wikipedia says Iron Butterfly was "stuck at an airport". Their story is they were told a chopper would pick them up, and 3 different times they went to the airport and waited, and it never showed up.

In reality they were stuck in the studio trying to find the end to the damn song!
A little over a month afterwards--I had to think back on it--I was undergoing pre-deployment training this week 45 years ago--jungle survival training, getting all my overseas shots, legal indoctrination regarding last will/testament/Geneva Convention aspects, a bit of Vietnam history--how to interact in a foreign country, a full day of "Who is the Viet Cong?" just a bunch of crap mostly. (I still have that little Viet Cong pamplet somewhere in a box)
