I have a chance to buy a low usage Hobart 175 handler MIG welder. 300.00 or possibly cheaper maybe 250.
I heard the difference from a 175 and 180 is only on lower settings. The 180 has better control down low.
Thats just what I've read on other forums. Any truth to that?

I have used a Handler 180 and loved it. My old boss has his Hobart 180 and wants me to buy it for 550 but I can't swing that.

Don't know a dam thing about it, sorry never used one but have some questions after doing a little research on the net.

Is it 110 or 240 V?
I am guessing it is 240V That's good for thicker metals and less passes but bad for thinnest metals.

Does it have click settings on the heat range or are they infinite as they can be set in between the numbers?
infinite is better but as long as it has 10 heat settings that is fine for most welding.

It really does depend on what you intend on using it for so in the end it is up to you.

Im going to pick one up tonight for 250. He started at 500.00 I watched it on CL and he kept lowering the price. It's supposed to be very low mileage. It doesn't have gas regulator or hoses though.
I'm pretty sure it's infinite setting.

Actual CL pic.

OK now I got something to go on, The upper knob is the heat settings and the lower knob is the wire speed, from the picture it has 4 heat settings not all that many and not all that good for welding of the thinnest or thickest materials. I don't know anything about your welding skills so I am just shooting from the hip that you know very little about welding and have limited use of one.

4 heat settings depending on how low they go and how high they go will get you a bead, but it is limited in its penetration of thicker metals and may, depending on the lowest setting still be to much for thinner metals. I can't read even after blowing the page up to 300 % the settings amps ratings.

I am willing to bet your bosses 180 has 10 heat settings, does it? if it does and is in good shape offer him 300 for it and see what he says before you ever go and pay 250 for this one. Hey what have you got to lose. See the thing with a welder is the heat settings and how many of them there are, each one gives you more or less penetration of the metal you are trying to weld and the more you have the better the welder it is. As well as the more versatile the welder is. then there is the duty cycle or amount of time the welder can weld a bead without having to wait for it to cool down before starting more beads. look at the duty cycle of the welder you want to buy on Craig's list and your bosses, I am almost positive your bosses will have a longer duty cycle than that one as well as many more heat settings.

Sorry Dude. Done did the deed.
My old boss actually went up in price from 500 to 550.
I have used the 180 some and it is very capable.
It has ten voltage settings where as mine the 175 has four.
Motor mounts and bumper hitches are the heaviest I will be welding.
Wheel wells and battery boxes are probably gonna be the thinnest.

He gave me the cart. Bonus. Now I need some wire and gas.

When you go to get your tank get a spare liner, you will thank me later. I order most of my consumables online from a couple of places but these 2 are my favorites,

https://weldingsupply.com/c...0:UNDEF5088298::::PL

http://store.cyberweld.com/

Both quick delivery and free shipping over a certain amount.

Practice, practice, practice and then practice some more !

Have fun

Thanks!
I bought an auto darkening helmet today at Farm and Fleet.

I also modified my 220v extension cord for two outlets, one the pin type and the other crows foot. I have a planer and table saw I run also.

You will wonder how you ever did without it once you start using it, I loved mine on the job, no more lifting the hood to see where my next weld needed to be, it makes welding lots of small welds in different places so much quicker.

I ran a test bead for the first time with it and it worked great. Good enough for what I need.
Edit; I just ran some flux core wire through it as I don't have a tank or regulator yet.
