I was just watching a segment on CBSN about the recent Listeria contamination of Blue Bell ice cream products. They interviewed two former employees who told about unsanitary conditions in the factory that led to the Listeria contamination such as puddles of spilled ice cream left on the floor, water running down the walls from a leaking roof and re-using ice cream shipping boxes up to seven times. Listeria breeds in moisture and is resistant to refrigeration too. Their is also a strain of Listeria that can infect the heart and cause cardiac problems. It was also stated that when the company was told about their ice cream testing positive for Listeria they did not change any procedures for two weeks and they only shut down the line that the contaminated ice cream came from.
