I bought a new bass guitar last week. It is a Rogue VB100 copy of a Hofner 500/1. I was skeptical about a Rogue, but the reviews were good and the price was right. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it looks and feels, how well it plays and how good it sounds. Yesterday, I put on a set of D'addario tape wound strings and I haven't been able to put it down, since. I am a happy boy.
Here is a brief sound clip: https://instaud.io/22ZJ (the guitar is my Epiphone ES-335 and the drums are synthesized)
I never was a big Beatles fan, they just weren't my style, but I always thought that bass was cool and it does have a very different sound from my Ibanez, especially with the tape wounds. It is very deep and rich, almost like an upright bass.
Coincidentally though, often when Paul was playing the Hofner, John and George were playing Epiphone Casinos which are somewhat like my 335.
I remember when that album came out. I wasn't quite 14 years old. It seemed so very different, cutting edge, daring almost. That will have been 50 years ago, at the end of this year.

It still sounds good to me. I wasn't a fan of the Beatles until very late in their journey, was more into the Rolling Stones, the Animals, and the West Coast music scene. About the time that Abbey Road came out, I started to give them more of a listen, and their music still is among my favorites. It is timeless. Two of the best rock songs ever done are 'Hey Bulldog' and 'Helter Skelter'.....IMHO
I like it. Sounds good. I have a 45 year old Kingston version of the same bass. Unfortunately, it's just junk. Always has been.

Blasted some "Hey Bulldog" in the car, today. (2010 Monsoon system. One of the best car systems I've ever owned.) Turned up to *slightly below* the threshold of distortion is just about right.
The bass is straight through with just a touch of reverb. The guitar is my 335 through a Mooer pedal, the high-hat is from my Ddrum electric drum kit and the wood block is just that.
Thank you! I was looking for a sound more like an upright bass and these were on sale. Here is a clip of the bass by itself. https://instaud.io/22VD (tapewounds, no effects, no EQ, neck PU, plucked at the base of the neck) I think if I can cut a sponge just right as a mute, I will get almost what I want.

What are you playing it through?
I have a Fender Rumble 25. I don't play in a band, so it does everything I need. When I record, the bass usually goes straight into a Scarlet Solo USB interface.

I just bought a newer SR300 because my Ibby EDB self identified as a Gibson and the headstock snapped. bada boom

Sounds good! I think I see what your trying to get. I have a DigiTech B200 pedal that has a "British" setting and I got some great tones using that. The EDB with flat wounds and I mix of the fretless setting was great too. Don't know if you are a pedal guy but these do a lot + expression pedal. Also has a drum section. Fun stuff for around 40 bucks used.
Wayne: Hey, Tiny, who's playing today? Tiny: Jolly Green Giants and the Shitty Beatles. Wayne: Shitty Beatles? Are they any good? Tiny: They suck. Wayne: Then it's not just a clever name.
