Maybe Iran created it and that's why, LOL.

So, the version where you don't die anyway, what treats symptoms at home? Common cold and flu meds?

"Scientists were close to a coronavirus vaccine years ago. Then the money dried up."

quote
Dr. Peter Hotez says he made the pitch to anyone who would listen. After years of research, his team of scientists in Texas had helped develop a vaccine to protect against a deadly strain of coronavirus. Now they needed money to begin testing it in humans.

But this was 2016. More than a decade had passed since the viral disease known as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, had spread through China, killing more than 770 people. That disease, an earlier coronavirus similar to the one now sweeping the globe, was a distant memory by the time Hotez and his team sought funding to test whether their vaccine would work in humans.

"We tried like heck to see if we could get investors or grants to move this into the clinic," said Hotez, co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children's Hospital and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. "But we just could not generate much interest."

quote
He said he hopes the seriousness of the outbreak leads to reforms in how the federal government funds vaccine development, although he notes that he called for similar changes after the SARS and Ebola outbreaks.

quote
"Because nobody would invest a few million dollars into these SARS vaccines, we're looking at, I don't know what the number is, $10 billion, $100 billion in economic losses,"

Mike Hixenbaugh for NBC News; March 5, 2020.

Much of the treatment does involve the same treatment one indulges in with cold and flu, as coronavirus is very similar to common cold.
When tested and confirmed positive for covid-19 by medical facilities, and at home quarantine is ordered, medications are prescribed, just as a person that visits a doctor for the flu or cold gets.

People need to cut out all this travel, especially leisure travel that is un-necessary. Not sure why anyone would want to:
a. Risk getting infected.
b.Risk infecting others.

This out this morning........

10:30 a.m. Cases surge in Switzerland
Switzerland reported 130 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the national total to 210, Swiss Federal Office of Public Health spokesperson Daniel Dauwalder told ABC News.

More than 3,500 people have been tested for the virus in Switzerland so far. Dauwalder said a vast majority of the positive cases were people who had recently traveled to Italy, which has become a hot spot in the global outbreak.

........................................................................................

9:18 a.m. Belgium sees spike in new cases
The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Belgium have more than doubled to 109 after 59 new patients tested positive Friday, Jan Eyckmans, a spokesperson for the Belgian health ministry, told ABC News....Most of the new cases are linked to recent travel to Italy, where at least 3,296 people have been infected with the virus. Several of the new patients are related to individuals who traveled to Italy, according to Eyckmans.

...........................................................................................

8:45 a.m. Egypt reports 12 new cases from Nile cruise ship
Twelve people from a Nile cruise ship in Egypt have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said Friday.

The infected individuals are Egyptian workers from the boat, which sailed along the Nile River from Aswan to Luxor. They are all asymptomatic, according to a joint statement from Egypt's health ministry and the World Health Organization....Tests revealed a Taiwanese tourist of "American origin," who was a passenger on the ship, was the "main case that infected other cases," according to the statement.

.........................................................................................

7:30 a.m. Passenger aboard Grand Princess cruise ship speaks out
The Grand Princess cruise ship remained docked off the California coast Friday morning as health officials await results from dozens of coronavirus tests.

Test kits were delivered to the vessel via helicopter on Thursday after it was determined that the first person to die from the novel coronavirus in California had previously sailed on the ship in February.

..........................................................................................

3:30 a.m. American tourist becomes 1st case in Bhutan
An American tourist in Bhutan has been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus as the first confirmed case in the South Asian country, situated on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, prompting officials there to temporarily ban all incoming tourists and shutter schools in three regions.

Bhutan's Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet announced the case in a press release early Friday morning, saying the patient is a 76-year-old U.S. citizen who had entered the country via a flight from India on Monday.

The man left Washington, D.C., on Feb. 18 and toured India from Feb. 21 to March 1. He was traveling with his 58-year-old partner, according to Bhutan's Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
On Wednesday, the man traveled to Punakha, a town in the Himalayas of Bhutan, where he stayed at Densa Boutique Resort. Upon returning to Thimphu on Thursday, he went back to the hospital again and was found to have a fever, sore throat, cough and shortness of breath. He was kept under observation at the flu clinic, which has become a designated coronavirus hospital, and samples were collected and sent to Bhutan's Royal Center for Disease Control for testing, officials said.

The test results came back positive for COVID-19 late Thursday night and were validated early Friday morning. Since then, he has been isolated in the coronavirus hospital.

By Friday morning, health officials have traced more than 90 people who had come in contact with the American tourist in Bhutan.

As you can see, one person can spread it easily, and each new person exposes dozens of others.

S. Korea, Egypt, Italy, China are the predominant 'sources' of new infections, but it won't be long before the USA joins that list in a big way if people don't start staying home.

Oh.and the "New Strain" (2nd strain) 'type S' is actually the original or ancestral version of Covid-19.

quote
ype L is said to have made up around 70% of the samples, despite S being the “ancestral version”.

Type L was reportedly more prevalent when the infection emerged in Wuhan, but decreased early in the year once the virus started crossing into other countries.

The scientists also described type L as “more aggressive” and potentially faster spreading.

Type S meanwhile is said to be more similar to coronaviruses found in bats – where Covid-19 likely started, and pangolins – a potential “intermediate host” before the strain “jumped” into humans.

The scientists suggest type S may have been circulating unnoticed for some time, not causing severe illness.

They stress, however, their research is preliminary and based on a small number of samples.

Just thinking of things people should probably stock up on.
What actually kills those who die, Pneumonia?
So what is it about 14 days... it only spreads for 14 days, or it stops giving symptoms after 14 days? It "goes away" and the individual's sickness is over after 14 days?

Depends on the person and what other previous risk factors they have. Pneumonia is one of the 'side effects' the bodiy's immune system fight causes in trying to get rid of the virus and is probably the most prevalent cause for hospitalization (and death) but organ failure (kidneys/liver etc) also occur.

The 14 days is the generally accepted incubation period..the time between possible exposure and visible symptoms. If a person is suspected of being exposed but have no symptoms, they are usually put in either facility quarantine or at home quarantine for 2 weeks. If they still have no symptoms after 14 days, they are generally deemed not to have the virus. If they DO exhibit symptoms within that 2 week period, they are then tested to confirm diagnosis.

Recovery itself, can take weeks or even months.
Even before the 14 days is up with or without onset of symptoms tho, the infected person is still able to transmit the virus to other people.

The problem with that 14 days is that it isn't written in stone, and the suspect could still be asymptomatic after 14 days, and shortly afterwards, start showing signs. If a person has a really good immune system, they may not show any symptoms as their body's own defenses fight off the virus. It is firmly believed, that there are many people that are infected, with no symptoms, or a 'light' infection that are out walking around and spreading it. This is what they call 'community infections'.
There simply aren't enough test kits to test everyone that may have been exposed.

Don't forget the mildly symptomatic who just pass it off as something else.

Achy joints? Cough ? Feeling a little fuzzy and under the weather but not much?

That's pretty normal for me. If those were the only symptoms I'd never suspect I had it. Just chalk it up to 40 years of smoking and a crappy sleep schedule.

It appears that the Italian infections have been traced back to patient zero there. It is significant because he knew he was infected, but kept working at a Chinese restaurant and even home delivered food.

Not going to say what I am really thinking about this person.

I suspect globally, there are many others.
A Pakistani migrant (I assume traveled from Pakistan) but even today, the map 'shows' only 6 cases in all of Pakistan. Shortest distance between any 2 points (Italy and Pakistan) is 3200 miles.
Where did this migrant get it and when?
Egypt..Iran..China S. Korea..where else had he been?
These are but a few of the unknowns that make it so difficult to contain an outbreak.

Can't wait until this blows over. All of the gains I've made for the past several months in the market have been wiped out in two weeks. Amazing how that works.

Very true. If you have a 401(k) and you continue to invest a percentage of your income you will be ok as the market will recover and anything purchased now can be considered a sale price. If you are relying on income from stocks it's not so good. I am about 50/50 stock funds and bond funds as I am close to retirement. Maybe it's time to invest in makers of hand sanitizers, N95 masks, pharmaceuticals, soap, hospitals, etc.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me....meaning, I don't understand what it means.

Except for HPV, and perhaps HIV is it not true that most vaccines don't help once a person is already infected with a virus...IOW, they aren't therapeutic??

Eventually this disease will spread everywhere.
Some people will be affected, some will die.......

It is inevitable.

What is interesting to me is the short-sightedness of the Globalists....concentrate the world's manufacturing into a densely populated, just past Bronze Age agrarian society with a history of epidemics, and then have no Plan B for when SHTF......

Real friggin smart.

"The Coronavirus Outbreak Could Disrupt the U.S. Drug Supply"
Yanzhong Huang for the Council on Foreign Relations; March 5, 2020.
https://www.cfr.org/in-brie...supply-shortages-fda

It's a brief report. Here's the last sentence:

quote
In the long term, U.S. pharmaceutical companies should also rethink their supply chains, including by changing the practice of replenishing their inventories just in time and diversifying API supplies to reduce dependence on Chinese and Indian manufacturers.

I think it calls for Strategic Globalism.

Except for HPV, and perhaps HIV is it not true that most vaccines don't help once a person is already infected with a virus...IOW, they aren't therapeutic??

Vaccine was the translation but I bet it's not what we understand as a drug that gives immunity to a disease. I will have to ask further to see exactly what was meant. Something like Tamiflu or some other anti-viral drug or an actual vaccine or some combination.

This is not good: CPAC attendee tests positive for coronavirus

quote

The American Conservative Union (ACU) announced Saturday that an attendee at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The patient in question was exposed to the virus before attending the conference and was tested for the disease in a New Jersey hospital, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed as positive on Saturday. The patient is currently in quarantine in the hospital where they were tested.

You know there is going to be a lot of hand shaking and baby kissing going on over the next eight months.

It's going to happen. There is no way to completely isolate everyone. Thankfully it appears that this new virus will end up less deadly than the regular flu.

Medical security at the hospital we use is dang near air tight.

Hand sanitizer stations EVERYWHERE and masks handed out when you enter, and they have reduced the # of entrances and exits by at least 1/2. A table is set up at every entrance with gloves and masks and a quick question asking about recent travel and general health.

Unrelated to the coronavirus:
I spent most of the day there, as my wife had a neurological anomolay of some kind about 11am today and had to be transported by ambulance to the same facility that did my heart bypass in 2015. Stable and better now..Mini stroke/ transient ischemic attack (TIA) is the thinking right now, but more tests tomorrow.

Here's hoping she has a complete recovery. I had a minor one three years ago, no further issues.

Damn! Know that she and you will both be in my prayers. Please feel free to let me know if there is anything, anything at all I can do. I know that there isn't much (if anything) but, I'm there if I can help.
