There's speculation that thermal imaging could be used to locate their nests, even if they are hidden underground or in some other hard to spot location.
Also, acoustic sensors might be of use. It's a unique sound pattern when they take to the air.

Hopefully these new ones aren't nearly as aggressive as the ground hornets/yellow jackets we have here in East Texas. Mean sobs they are. Got my first encounter with those back in 1965. You wouldn't think that many could come boiling out of that little hole in the ground that fast. The will pursue you for a long ways too.
Works if you have a subscription to NatGeo online, and even if you don't, it will let you read it as a "freebie", I think, as long as you haven't already had one recently.
If you have a mind for some video reporting, you can go to YouTube, search for "murder hornets" and select the Upload Date filter to get the most recent results.
That's only the 50 or so that were reported. Just the sets of remains that were intact enough to be identified as human. The real toll includes many from the number of missing persons.

Just as your dad did, and his dad before him, and so on and so on... Whatever the fear, the future always seems to get here just fine. Whether we agree with it or not.
This isn't necessarily about the future at all, it's more about the future we want it to be. It's about "feelings".
I am sick and tired of the media promoting fear. Fear of this, fear of that, fear of the other thing.
Since when has fear been a major player in the American psyche?
We face fear and overcome the problem.
The media is turning America into a bunch of spineless worms.
I've never understood how people think or blame the 'media' for 'drumming up fear'. Fear is an emotion that comes from infancy, but overcome as an adult. Fear is way over-rated and way over used as a rationale for bad behavior and poor choices. Childishness.
Fear is a normal human emotion at any age. As adults we (well, most of us) have learned to either repress it, or harness it and turn it into something more useful. How quickly that happens depends on the individual.
All those 10s of millions on medication for anxiety and panic attacks? That is simply repressed fear that hasn't been processed surfacing at unexpected times in unexpected ways.

Drumming up fear is how they operate MJ. It's simply about money as always.

If these giant Asian hornets get established here in North America, we may all be feeling the sting in our wallets when we go shopping for honey or produce.
As the various reports have described, they are carnivorous and among their non-human victims already, here in North America, are the American honeybees that U.S. growers depend upon for pollinating many of their crops. They destroy the beehives and kill all the bees. In one of the reports, a beekeeper in Washington State donned his protective clothing and exterminated a giant hornets nest, but his protective clothing wasn't protective enough to prevent him from suffering several stings to his legs. These giant hornets stung right through the fabric of his beekeepers garment.
American honeybees have been under pressure for years with the colony collapse disorder, if memory serves me. They don't need this.
So we all should be seriously rooting for the front line workers in this case--beekeepers among them--and hoping they can eradicate these first known invaders in Washington State and to the north and across the international border, near Vancouver, and then keep eradicating any future infestations.

I have to say that I disagree with this statement. I believe that fear is a natural response or behavior or emotion that ALL of humanity has regardless of age. The "media" ABSOLUTELY understands this and capitalizes on in selling adds. Yes people do react to fear no matter their age or maturity.
Asian giant hornets nest in the ground for most of the year, but are most active between July and November.
Now, entomologists are 'embarking on a full-scale hunt for the hornets', before they breed and become widely established in North America.
'This is our window, Chris Looney, an entomologist at the Washington State Department of Agriculture, told The Times.
While he has set out in the woods of Washington to trap the hornets, he says the task will be difficult, given the hornets can fly more than 20 miles an hour.
'If we can't do it in the next couple of years, it probably can't be done,' he stated
Asian giant hornets only nest in the ground, do not seek out human food [I interpret that as meaning that they are not going to make a special effort to show up at your outdoors picnic] and feed on insects only. Asian giant hornets are large-headed and can vary in colour from different shades of orange, yellow and brown. They can be up to five centimetres in length, with a wingspan of four to seven centimetres.
It's not paranoia when the insect is as big as your thumb, flies at speeds up to 20 mph, attacks in a swarm when agitated and has a stinger that will penetrate through every last layer of the clothing that you would likely be wearing. Oh--and it's said to hurt like a ***** . Good luck with that "bigger fly-swatter."

I do believe that some ABSOLUTELY do believe in fear and have a desperate need for it in their lives. Others got over it and replaced it with logic, reason, and courage.

Why is is racist to say Wuhan virus but not Asian murder hornets?
I got tagged on the forehead cleaning out the shed last weekend. The fracker paid with his little life and the lives of his friends and family.... But still.
And the media stokes their fear in a minute by minute onslaught. Fear has been used to control the masses since the beginning of time.
In the course of this one string of forum messages, there have been links to at least five different media reports about the hornets.
TMZ
New York Times
National Geographic
Daily Mail
CHEK News, Canada
Five reports, each as different as the five digits of a human hand. Examine them. Compare them. Evaluate them. Remark their differences. Arrange them, assigning each a Truth Scalar from Zero to Five on a Linear Axis of "Fact VS Fear."
Confront the real "fear" that's at work here.

What is this monolithic "media" they speak of ?
It's a fable and the language that's being used to tell it is the language of fables.
