HI all,

Has anyone ever used a "super socket" before? Follow the amazon link to know which too please..

Are they worth buying?

Thanx,

Nope never have. My experience has been that one-size-fits-all rarely does a good job on anything.

Might be ok around the house but like some of my old GFs, I wouldn't want to get out on the road with 'em.

I've got a couple of those that my wife and son bought for me. Maryjane's right... they're okay, but not great. I rarely use them.

If this was the apocalypse and you could only fit one socket in your pocket then you should get this one rocket.
IF you are out of 10mm sockets then you will lose this one just as easy

This was originally sold as the "Gator Grip."

They are fantastic for being able to do a lot, and they offer a bunch of sizes for various ranges of sockets.

What I would NOT use this for is as a day-to-day socket. You want to have a good set of forged sockets for all your normal garage work. What this IS excellent for is keeping in your tool bag for the instances where you may be missing that specific socket that you desperately need right at the moment, and for whatever reason do not have. It's also excellent to keep in an emergency repair kit in your car.

So, not for every-day use... but for occasional use.

In my experience, the tool with the best grip?

Socket?
Wrench?
Chanel Locks?
Vice Grips?

Nope.
Pipe Wrench, if you got the room.
It's the only tool that's never stripped-out or broke on me.*

*i did break one using a 6-foot cheater pipe on it.

I didn't break it but I saw a 48" Rigid pipe wrench broken back in the early 80s. (roughnecks can break anything)
I've had several 36"ones with handles bent so bad they were all but useless.

Nothing will match a well made correctly sized wrench/socket
If you have limited space an adjustable wrench would be a good idea. They are not all made the same.
I have broken a couple, I have two that have stuck around for the last 40 years. I have done my best to break them and they are still here.

The problem with the super socket is the pins inside will deform if you put any real pressure on them.
That will eventually destroy the socket.

Never use a tool that isn't made for what you are doing unless there is no other choice.
A screwdriver is not a pry bar, but they will work if you don't have one. Don't get pissed off when it breaks.
A wrench is not a hammer, but it will beat on things. Again don't get mad if it breaks.
Plyers are not equal to a wrench, repeat that. Plyers are not a wrench. So unless the bolt/nut was already destroyed by the first guy go get the correct tool.

Ok now that I have that off my chest.

My thoughts are that the reviewer who said it's best for low torque application (10-15 ft-lbs) is probably right.

I've wrecked a couple of them over the years

Like said above, they are handy as hell to have around for low-torque stuff but dont depend on them too much. It's a lawnmower-fixin tool.

I have 1 or 2 in inventory just for weird things can't tighten/loosen by one hand. Even then often won't work because size of "socket" alone.
Related is multi-size socket w/ thin layer that hex head/nut pushes in smaller layer in the socket.

Don't use any of them w/ impact drills or drivers no matter what ads or labels say.
Springs in them allow pins to move randomly as impact tool loads changes.
That is part of problems in many reviews.

Even w/o that issue, Yes Most to all won't work when need a lot of torque. When over-torqued the pins often fail and can make other problems. Related tool bend or break the thin layers.

Isn't just "cheap" made in China that have problems...
Stanley made "HEX-A-MATIC" (Long discontinued) and many others have made/makes "unverisal" nut drivers etc that can work but often have same problems.
While Stanley claim that fits 1/4 to 7/16 (and Metric in between those limits) needs same space as 9/16 thin wall socket to work so I rarely use one.

Side Note: Gater Grip and many others are/was sold on TV as "buy one get one" deals that are a scam because you get charge high shipping for the "free" unit.
Even when you try to order just 1, they won't care and send 2 and bill the high shipping cost because they get commission.
Any "warranty" does not return shipping cost and many times you have to pay to ship back a dead unit. Often will charge shipping for replacement too.
If you don't record the call many Debtit/Credit cards won't "charge back" if you file a complaint.
Similar problem w/ "Lifetime battery" flashlights etc... "Free" replacement battery cost 5x or more the value of the battery in shipping. Very Few "Lifetime" battery offers don't charge shipping.
