Being from down south, I'm blissfully ignorant of weather patterns in this area. Would I have to be completely out of my mind to sleep under the stars in New York at the end of April? Funds are still tight right now and I won't be able to swing the gas, the food, the laps, the T-shirt and a motel room. Whaddaya think?

I guess it depends on you... it still gets cold that time of year. I know some people from local Boy Scout troups in Rochester that camp out all year round. If you have the gear, it can be done.
i'm looking into staying on sat night down there i would like to know where everyone is staying and some prices i just got off the phone with ac and hes going to check also i found that the red carpet inn in horseheads is 45 a night and is about 15 min from ac will keep ya posted
Hey bud its cheaper ask the guy about some discount ticket thing you have to just fill in your name and address for some card thing is what he told me when I called takes price down to $51 a night and if you have AAA it was $54 and i have that if you need it lol ace
I don't have the gear really, but I do have a warm set of cover-alls, a military-issued "bear suit" and "black silkies", and the front seat of my Fiero, hehehe. I had to sleep in my car in Horseheads, NY this past April 3rd because the Army reserves won't pay for a room for Friday nights; only Saturday nights. We were supposed to get about an inch of snow in Franklin and I figured I'd rather drive two hours in the rain and sleep in the car than sleep in a bed, drive in the snow, and be five hours late. I parked in a used car lot across from the Reserve Center in Horseheads, acted like a used car and slept well. But I'm gonna need to find a place a little closer to the action that weekend.
Gettin' anxious! Just bought a few more goodies from The Fiero Store. My Fiero hasn't broken down in quite a while and I was starting to miss working on it. So I decided to replace a few things that need it.
I got some rubber bumpers for the headlight doors, the headlight motor rebuild kits for both motors and a license plate mount for the front since I live in a *@# %&$ two-plate state. (I'd love to send NY a bill for the price of a new front fascia when I get to move south again.)
Anyway, looking forward to crusing the lakes and makin' the laps. Is anyone going to be traveling I-88 towards Binghamton? I'm just off of exit 11 in Franklin, NY if anyone wants to meet up for the ride down there.
Also, anyone traveling any part of I-88 between Schenectady and Binghamton should be careful because there isn't a day that goes by when I don't see at least three to four State Troopers pulled over with a customer. They've really been on the prowl lately and I'd hate to see someone's weekend foreshadowed by a speeding ticket. Ya'll be careful out there.
My Fiero is in for state inspection today. It is due this month, and I thought it would be a good idea to get it done ahead of time, in case it really does need something. The risk is the bonehead garage failing it for some BS reason. So wish me luck!
Are you guys going to stage at a group at the track?
Vin, any idea what they may have going on Sat at the track?
I've seen in previous posts and noticed on the WGI site that the word "paced" is very prominent when speaking about the 3 laps we'll be taking around the track.
How "paced" are these laps going to be? To be quite honest, getting my Fiero on a track at any speed will be a blast, but it'd be nice to open it up a little and give all 92 of my horses a chance to gallop. I'm not so concerned with the straightaway as I am the twists... I wanna feel some G's, hehehe.
Also, does any know if there will be a tech inspection prior to them letting us on the track? I'd hate to get up there and be denied access for loose body panels or excessive rust. Over the last three years, wallet permitting, I've been doing all I can to repair the damage done by 22 years of neglect by previous owners, road salt and outside storage.
And has it been decided as to whether or not we're going as a group or individually? This needs to be decided before Friday as there are different paths to take for individuals versus groups.
For the past few years when I have attended we have gone as a group. We go to the seperate staging area for clubs. As far as how "paced" the laps are all depends on the driver of the pace car you get behind. The official word from WGI is 55 MPH, my personal experience has been that on most of the turns at the Glen that is plenty fast. I will also say that once or twice I have seen shall we say "very spirited" paced laps.
As Vin said, they are officially paced laps. Single file, no passing, field led by a pace car. Rules also state that there is no hanging back to go faster thru the turns.
However, in reality, the pace car often moves along at a good clip, and nobody there seems to mind cars that hang back some so they can carry more speed through turns.
Last year near the end, I was with my uncle in his Mustang, and we were going out 2nd car in line in his Mustang. He was grumbling about how it wouldn't be a fun lap since we were too close to the pace car, and he wouldn't be able to hang back as since the pace car might slow should a big gap develop.
So we hit the track, the driver of the pace car hit the gas, and was just gone. I think the pace car driving was going for a personal speed record, because he just nailed it. In front of us was a WRX, then us, so we hit it too. By the end of the 3rd lap, the pace car had caught the tail end of the field!
It was almost too fun, as the WRX driver found out about his car's understeer when he nearly piled it into the guard rail on one turn! He dropped both drivers side wheels off the track and was inches.
Anyway, it's not the same as actually racing around a track, but plenty fun anyway! You can get some G's, and since Fieros aren't overly powerful you can really get on the gas too.
I have to say that were I the Pace Car driver, I'd find it very difficult to refrain from hammerin' the piss outta the gas. There's just something about "more than necessary" horsepower, sticky rubber and silky-smooth asphalt that brings out the primal beast and can make even the most conservative of men throw caution through the sunroof to be trampled by those in pursuit.
I just hope it doesn't get over 85 mph... if so, us '84 cars are gonna have our hands full tryin' to keep up with a tranny that runs outta teeth at 5000 rpms.
Well I have seen some passin of cars also but thats really not allowed and I would never pass anyone right Fierofreak hehe lol and I can say I do believe some of the fiero guys did get up to a 100 on the front straight so it is a fun time and another reason I personally like to go up later is one less of a crowd and 2 sometimes we can get out on the track again and do another session of laps for free which has happened in the past so it is a fun time and I do believe everyone does have fun. Look forward to seein everyone soon If anyone wants to cruise to the meeting location in watkins from my house please let me know I'm off of 86/17 exit 43 or exit 42 I can be easily reached from any of those exits. Exit 43 I'm about 3 miles from exit 42 I'm only about a mile but 43 is a little easier of an exit my address is 101 Mountainview Pl Painted Post, NY 14870 607-331-1342
exit 43 is the second painted post exit exit 42 is coopers plains so let me know
AC, we've never met but I think that with me knowing very little about these Fiero get-togethers and even less about NY, your house sounds like a great jumpin' off spot. Matter of fact, if you've got an extra 12' or so of driveway that's not gonna be occupied, would you mind if I park my Fiero/camper at your place? I don't know of too many places around that would appreciate someone catchin' 40 winks in their parking lot. I got lucky at Reserve Duty cause I was there after they closed and gone before they opened. I'm quiet, polite, housebroken and I don't take up much space.
You'd be amazed at just how comfy a 6'4" feller can get in such a little car.
Saturday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66.
Well, if weather forecasting here is anything like it is in Kentucky, this means that Saturday night/Sunday will either be dry as a popcorn fart or we'll be rowing our cars around the track...
hey all, hope i'm not too late, but I just read up about this, I'm in school at SUNY Oswego, so It's an easy day trip for me, i'll see you all sunday morning at the park!
Is it going to be a problem that i didnt pre register?!
really excited to go, will be my first fiero gathering.
Midnight-- yea its not a big deal if you didnt preregister We will be meeting at chefs diner for breakfast around 8am ish then we will be going down to the park for the show look forward to seeing your ride and meeting you. Its a blast with great people.
Brocefus (SP)- are you coming up in a camper pulling your fiero? I should have room for a camper I just need to know what time you are comming up on saturday due to I mayb not be here I am doing a cruise around the lake and will be leaving my house the latest 1030 so let me know. If your in front of my house to the right there is a bunch of bushes you can pull in there or in the driveway till i get back and are you going to go to the cruise and dinner or just meet up for the dinner. There will be some other gentlemen going i will have my personal vehichles parked on the left of my house so the other side there is a enough room and back yard also hehe.
Also if anyone needs to get ahold pf me here is my number 607-331-1342
Hmmm, forcast took a slight negative turn at the moment, but there is plenty of time for it to turn around. Right now, they are forcasting a high of 70, with a 30% chance of rain in the afternoon.
I know I wasn't very clear when I asked if I could "park my Fiero/camper at your place". What I meant was, my Fiero IS my camper, hehe. I was just gonna rack out in the car since the weather will be so nice.
I'll be leaving Franklin, headed your way about 7:30 am tomorrow morning and should get to Watkins Glen around 10 am or so. I'll just meet everyone at Wally World around 10:30-10:45 am.
I'll be driving the bone-stock red '84 with the luggage rack, sunroof, oxidized paint and absolutely no clear coat, hehe. Also, I feel it worth mentioning that my throttle is still really stiff and difficult to manage at times. So if anyone sees me taking off from a stop and I'm herkin' and jerkin' for that first few feet, I'm really not tryin' to drive like a moron, lol.
